Xltronic Music Massacre
This should be considered a collaboration effort, rather than a compilation of tracks. This will be a single composition consisting of many tracks (segments) made by regular music makers and amateur music makers alike.
It is a progressive project intended to display our musical tastes and give an insight to our creativity and personality. Definitively it will be one long single track consisting of many two minute segments created by the participants all connected together in one way or another.
Directions:
1. Send an email to __(email-address)__ conveying your wish to participate. Your name will be added. From there you will be sent a list of the participants and the order in which they will partake in the project. When it is your turn to contribute your piece; you will be sent a web address from where you can d/l the two tracks(or segments) that will be placed before yours.
2. Download the two tracks. These tracks are the two that will be placed before your track in the sequence. Compare and contrast the differences, try to determine the direction the composition is going and where your track is comparatively situated in the composition.
3. Start to create your track. It has to be 'anywhere under' 2 minutes in length. It is recommended that your track smoothly transitions from the previous one. Though this is not enforced but you must keep in mind that you must start from where the preceding track left off. It is also recommended that you use similar elements from the previous tracks in your track. Whether it would be bpm, style, samples, or character. They should all be tangible in some sense. Your track should be a direct response to the preceding tracks in one way or another. Other wise this would be a be a forum to display everyone's beat matching abilities.
4. Upload your segment (track) of the composition onto the site*. The oldest track will be displaced (with your track and the one that will precede yours.) Your done. The baton will be passed.

are you doing the final mixdown?.. the website, though convenient for those contributing, may be a step in the wrong direction.. also, I dont think the website should be available to everyone.. those contributing should only hear the tracks immediately preluding theirs..

So who is starting, does the list from the previous thread still apply to this one? eh?
I dont think people should really stress about the order that much, and they shouldnt stress about quality or whatever, its all in good fun
I hope more people join in

1. Send an email to scnj2082@hotmail.com (mixer’s email-address) conveying your wish to participate. Your name will be added. From there you will be sent a list of the participants and the order in which they will partake in the project. When it is your turn to contribute your piece; you will be sent via email the two tracks that will precede yours.
2. Download the attached two tracks in the email. These tracks are the two that will be placed before your track in the sequence. Compare and contrast the differences, try to determine the direction the composition is going and where your track is comparatively situated in the composition.
3. Start to create your track. It has to be ‘anywhere under’ 2 minutes in length; in mp3 format and no more than 128kbs. It is recommended that your track smoothly transitions from the previous one. Though this is not enforced but you must keep in mind that you must start from where the preceding track left off. Let me reinforce that the composition as a whole will be a collective of individual tracks, making in a sense a long flowing track. The musicians should try their best to have their endings of their piece end in a manner where the next musician can work off of easily. For instance, no abrupt silent endings, fade outs... ect, maybe end it at the end of a chorus abruptly, so that the next piece can have the chance to flow somewhat. Take into consideration that depending how you end your track, it could either continue the flow or make it nearly impossible for the next artist to work off of.
It is also recommended that you use similar elements from the previous tracks in your track. Whether it would be bpm, style, samples, or character. They should all be tangible in some sense. Your track should be a direct response to the preceding tracks in one way or another. Other wise this would be a be a forum to display everyone’s beat matching abilities.
4. Send your finished track back to the mixer.
In the end the mixer will attach each track together.

good work, Dolleater! but. i still think that having webspace would be good because big emails are problem for some people (like me). there wouldn't have to be a web-site, just the mp3's in a folder only the participants would know the address.
and i think 128kbps is too low quality. maybe not in the listening/inspiring process, but when mickey mixes the tracks he'll have to decode & encode the files again and that will finally destroy sound quality.
do i sound like a bitch...? not intented... keep up the good work Doll!
(i have to go now, back in an hour)

128kbps is fine.. most people should be able to send 128 kbps mp3 files that are <_2:00 long
dont do anything like 160, 192 .. it might result in a contrast in quality between segments.. and if it doesnt, it's just a pointless use of harddrive space

The reason they should be encoded at 128kbs is because its a perfect size mp3 to send through email. It'll be a burden for the mixer to encode every single track he gets. So you guys need to encode it yourself. Its not that hard it is?

depends on how he mix it ? do he mix it in mp3, with traktor ? better he decode them all in wav and mix it together in wavelab or soundforge and encode it back in mp3 with 128kbps ...
that's what i do all the time ...

hey... what about ogg vorbis? at 128kbps it sounds better than most 192kbps mp3s. the final mixed version could be in mp3 again.
winlame is an easy prog that encodes&decodes hq mp3's and oggs. give it a chance, it really is good.

MP3 is what is known as a "lossy" format. Thus, much of the sound data is removed when MP3 files are created. This results in a file with inferior sound quality to a CD. Vorbis is also a "lossy" format, but uses superior acoustic models to reduce the damage. Thus, music released in Vorbis will sound better than a comparably sized MP3 file.

Lets keep a universal format going, its easier and simpler. This project is already lacking in simplicity.
The 128kbs Mp3 should just about size under 2mb. If your track doesnt, that will would be a special exception and something can be worked out later. Lets cross some bridges when we get to them. Relax everyone. Dont worry, be happy. :)
