the piano pieces in drukqs

after hearing them a few times, i discovered a few
interesting things. so it's official, that rdj can't play
the piano, and he used something like a eletronically
steared piano. okay, but there is one thing i'm curious
about: when you listen to the songs carefully, you can hear
something you can hear only when someone plays the piano for
real. when you play a few keys with one hand, it's
impossible, that you hit them at the same time. so you hear,
that one key is played slightly faster than the other. a few
of the songs on drukqs are played this way. but if they
would be played by a mechanically played piano, it should
play every key perfectly...

What gave you the impression he couldn't play? He have
never heard he used an electronically steered piano. I
heard he bought one of those yamaha ones, used it for a bit
and then started fucking about with the strings etc.
inside.

But I always just assumed he played it.

ah they are lovely pieces no matter what and a lot have been
used on
TV for poignant video clips....

- an Andy Warhol Documentry
- a "whats happening to our kids" paeodoplile type thing
- i´m sure ch4 has used it in their "on ch4 this week"
blurb

A prepared piano doesn't mean electronic. It's basically one
that someone has fiddled with to create a different sound.
ie: putting nails on the hammers and such like. The pieces
are possible to play as I've finally managed it. :D

yeah, but it's true that he used a computer-steared piano

so how come in Avril 14th you can hear him pressing down the
keys on the piano? i've spent alot of time playing piano's
and i've got a pretty good trained ear when it comes to
music too but even my b/f oscillik can hear it...it sounds
like he's playing it to me..

I can't see the point in using a computer steered piano, he
might as well just use his laptop and a midi keyboard.

I am sure he bought a limited edition white yamaha piano,
and that Gary Barlow from Take That also bought the same
one.

if he can't play the piano, how can he play synths?

if you can play a synth, you can play a piano and vice versa

it's not a box piano, it's a prepared piano, but i reckon
it's real (as in, not synthed or electronically done or
whatever)

even if they are done with a computer sequenced piano, as if
you cant program the sequencer to play the notes slightly
after each other.

the whole point of a sequencer is to enable you to program
things excactly as you want them. if you want every note
perfectly in time-you got it. all the same volume-you got
it. wherever you want the note and at whatever volume, you
just program it that way.

personally i think he played those traks anyway. they dont
seem that complicated. and anyone whos hung out with synths
and keyboards around him most his life is bound to have a
few skills.

Actually sadist is right:

"He bought a grand piano that can be played by computer.
It's called a 'Diskclavier' and it's made by Yamaha. It's
exactly like a straightforward grand piano but the keys can
be controlled by a computer via MIDI - the musical
instrument digital interface. Richard James cannot read
conventional musical notation and he cannot play a keyboard
so, in order to make the piano and prepared piano pieces
that appear on 'Drukqs' he prepared his Diskclavier
according to the principles established by John Cage and
programmed the playing using a computer. The results are
there for all to hear. It's a real piano on Drukqs, not a
sampler or a synthesizer.
"

that proves my point. you can sequence notes the way you
want.

Well not this part of your point ;-)

"personally i think he played those traks anyway. they
dont seem that complicated. and anyone whos hung out with
synths and keyboards around him most his life is bound to
have a few skills.
"

:-p

But yeh, otherwise i agree with you. If that
computer-program can emulate a human-pianoplayer, i'm sure
it can also capture those slight imperfections... stuff like
"program the sequencer to play the notes slightly after each
other". It makes perfect sense.

It's just like some progams have what is called "Humanize"
function. It's seem to be used largely for drums and it
will occasionally make a few off beat. If one were to take
one of those $40,000 midi controlled pianos and use this
function I imagine it would sound like a person playin.

wow... so technically, you can never be sure, if the song
you hear is played for real or by a computer...

i suppose the computer could make a piano do things that are
not humanly possible :-p (like play superfast, or melodies
that would require humans to have more than 10 fingers).

this too, but i mean this frightens me...
i hear some piano piece, and i think: o ! how wonderful. and
then i realize that some kid has made it in fruity piano
roll...

Kesson Daslef seems rather difficult to play. I'm not a
master pianist, but I don't think it would be very easy.

hm... i don't have that problem...

a good song is a good song in my eyes... no matter where it
comes from.

If i hear a beautiful piece of piano-music, and then found
out some kid made it with a computer... that wouldn't make
me like it any less.

to echo surrounded...

what does it matter how he made the music??? he is still the
music maker & if its lush music its still lush even if you
find out it was made by randomly tapping keys

(oh and hello! im a newbie on this forum)

Actually. avril 14th happens to be one of my fave tracks on
disc1.
I think this whole case is great and inspiring. It shows
that as long as you have the musical insight combined with
imagination and creativity, you can be a top rated artist in
the musicworld, and you don't even have to be able to play
an instrument to be respected.

I remember when I though Nanou2 was the worst track on it,
now it's my fave... I love those piano tracks, but the album
as a whole has a bad flow for me and I have trouble sitting
through it.

that is true ophecks, the piano pieces, although brilliant,
do tend to break the flow of the album and seem a little out
of place .

Hi, welcome to the board and: " if its lush music its
still lush even if you find out it was made by randomly
tapping keys
"... yes! Exactly.

People find the weirdest reasons for not liking a song...

-the artist performing it is too popular
-the artist has made lots of money with it
-the song is used in a commercial
-the performing artist didn't write the song himself
-the artist is too young/too old

etc etc etc...
bah...

Just listen to the music! That's the only thing that
matters.

The piano-pieces on druqks are brilliant, all of them... i
adore them :-) Druqks is incredibly varried, but somehow i
never found that a problem. It all seems to work and flow
just fine for me.

(i have more problems with ICBYD... most of the songs are
excellent, but they don't fit very well together at all
imo...)
