seriously... i think he's important because he tries, and makes very good at, lots of varied styles... even if it's all electronic, idm maybe, his works can be very different.
SAWII sounds like it was made by a different person than the one who made RDJalbum, which sounds like it was made by a different person than the one who made drukQs, which sounds like it was made by a different person than the one who made Caustic Window, etc.
and for ICBYD, at least two or three different persons.
he's an electro-idm-ic chameleon.
downside of that is that there isn't any real "afx sound" or "afx style" to me, like other artists have... the man has a lot of personality, but his works have so much different personalities that his music in general hasn't.
squarepusher is a chameleon too, but he had his jazzy influences, which makes his music a lot more defineable than aphex twin's.

uzim,
Yeah there is an Aphex sound. There is a certain way he constructs his tracks similar motivs etc. Not that I'm an expert or anything.
For me I always felt he made the effort to make his tracks emotive as oppose to being just totally abstract.

Its nice to be at the top of the tree.
The thing about Aphex's music is its a lifetime interest for those who discover it. I mean lets face it you can never really go off Aphex. You may have spells where u may tire a little of it or whatever but once your a fan its for life. Whereas pop music and other artists in general tend to have their sell by dates. In that respect he has huge advantages over many other musicians/groups etc.

Well I don't know difinitively, but I wouldn't like to bet against it.
I think he is in an eviable position. His music is so strong and unique that even passing artists who may be strong and compete for a while never really last the mile. Aphex is like Duracel batteries, he's like a freight train so I doubt whether they'll be talking about Chemical Bros, Orb, Orbital or whatever in the same frequency as Aphex 50 years from now. I just think he has a lot of durability thats all probably the most.

I don't like this "electroclash" thing that's being hyped like crazy lately.
I bought DJ mag when I was over in England last week and it had a free 7" on the cover from City Rockers, who were their label of the year. Fuck me! What a load of boring synthy bollocks!
