Actually re-read my last post. I didn't side with either
camp. I didn't say you should pursue something because it
may be true. I said you can't prove it either way, that was
the only point I made.

Proof is something you can never have in a lot of
situations. How can we prove that gravity holds true in all
cases? We can't test all cases. We can't even think of them.
In real life we can't diddle round asking ourselves whether
or not gravity is a law or only a suggestion--we endeavour
not to fall from high places sans bungee.

Similarly with god. You look at the facts as best as you can
make them out and do what makes sense.

Oh, the teapots have strong black earl grey darjeeling
and no milk or sugar (naturally).

Well I'm glad you aren't one of those strawberry infusion
blasphemers.

oh god...

imo atheism is as naiive as religion. i don't bother to try
to answer questions which can never be answered. acceptance
of the unknown has made me feel so much better.

"you friends were oviously very stoned"

"'m not looking to be an ass..

but people can search their souls all day and come to
conclusions about God and those conclusions can still be
wrong. "

"i think the essay shuts down any attempts prove God
exists "

"by the way i'm not trying win anyone over to any side.
just mabey making some people think about it, thats all. "

We blame people of religion for having a holier then thou
type attitude..... but that Cfern was the most pretencious
holier then thou attitude bullshit I have ever seen.

People are not understanding the religion is a personal
thing. Its a catalyst to be used to get through hard ships
and tough times for people. For something to believe in,
hope when there is none. Its sad that the image and the
people of various chruches have given it a bad name.

I dont believe in God, and I am not a religious person. But
people who do believe in a god of some kind, most anyway,
use their belief for some security in there lifes. They pray
and worship.... usually for hope or for some understanding
in their lives. Its funny but most people who I known as
christians who act all secure believing in god... you ask
them deep philosophical questions about life..... and they
get nervous and uneasy. Religion is meant for personal
healing. I see nothing wrong with that.

Unless you SHOW ME a scientific LAW that shows what created
the cosmic egg from which all life came (cosmic egg being
the ball of matter that was exploded by some unknown
force... and from which we all came from. So in a sense moby
was right... we all are made of stars... hahaha. ). Unless
you show me how that cosmic egg was created... how it
exploded...

then you can outright say that a god of somekind doesnt
exist.

But there is now scientific law... with all the great
scientific minds in the world.. no one has figuered out this
yet. And its the last piece of the puzzle sort of speak to
find out.

I would like to think that if there was a god, he could see

I would like to think that if there was a god, he could see
that you have liven a just and right life, and take you to
where ever .....

No one knows... and one essay isnt going to prove anything,
just raise more questions. Unless that essay is a scientific
law that has been tested and proven many times over and come
to one common conclusion.

Until then.... let people believe what they want to
believe.

the word atheism stems from theology

my mate explained to me that theology means 'belief in one
god'

that sort of sat uncomfortably with me, because i knew the
implication was that theres only one right way, which i
disagree with

however

i am certain there is something we do all have in common.

but as of yet im not able to explain it.. nor do i have an
urge to try to suss it all out.

im fond of lifes mysteries :)

Every theist is an atheist when it comes to other people's
gods.

An atheist just believes in one less god than a theist does.

its easy.. we are all humans on this earth. and we are
trying to find some answers to the meaning of our existance.

We ocassionally bump heads and get into fights... but
hopefully one day we will aquire this knowlage

'Unless that essay is a scientific
law that has been tested and proven many times over and come

to one common conclusion'...

'Laws' of the nature you have described do not exist. The
only way to 'prove' a theory or law, is to try to dis-prove
it. Which is an infinate task.
Which means that nothing can be proved beyond all doubt by
any scientist that believes in true scientific method. It
can only be shown to be more probable than the alternative.

My own tests and experiments have shown that the existence
of God is less probable than the non-existence. Therefore
that is what I believe is probably the case.

theism is believe. atheism is the absence of beleive.
monotheism is specifically believe in 1 god, for example,
christianity. polytheism is beleive in many gods, for
example buddism.

That's why it's okay to massacre the infidel
oh come now .. I know, it was a joke.. :)

Why do we
need something external to shoehorn "worth" into our
lives?
'worth' is an abstract, nominalist term .. there's no such
thing except for what we make it I suppose, so in that
respect we don't need an external force. But if we are just
random collections of carbon that happened to congeal into a
life form with no God, then what's the purpose of life? I'm
not saying that it would be a totally unhappy existence, or
that people couldn't do things to make their world better.
I just mean, what would be the point of it all when ''in the
end it doesn't even matter''.. hehe. Thats all I meant by
worthless. I didn't mean 'devoid of happiness and progress'
..

I'm confusing myself.

I don't think science is antagonistic to a sense of wonder.
Rather, it's often the cause of it! When I read about what
little I can understand of molecular biology I'm blown away
with wonder and I hear the Brandenburg concertos in my head.
(probably because that used to be the soundtrack to The
Nature of Things science show when I was a kid)

A nature walk is more inspiring if you actually know
something about nature, and you see all the complex
interlocking patterns of life propagating itself... how some
trees have cones that can only be activated by the high
temeratures of a forest fire, or how certain amphibians have
antifreeze that allows the moisture to leach from their
tissues so they can freeze solid without bursting their
cells...

yeah, other friends of mine are blown away by the molecular
level

i wonder who would be surprised by this though.

take yourself out somewhere you like

habitually many of us (well i know i do daily, hourly) focus
on small things at a time, with the eyes

every now and then ill sit back, and let my view widen.

this is a similar technique to that employed by speed
readers

what im trying to describe, is looking at more at once than
what you normally do

you become aware you can see wider than a certain point.
soon youre watching things move right up to your
peripherals.

i find that to be such a nice change from what my
shitkicking jobs train me to do :)

and create more wonder

"'Laws' of the nature you have described do not exist"

They sure do exist lucky..... E=mc2

matter to energy

lets see what else

the fact that there is a force called gravity that suspends
objects on earth with out some extreme force... and all
objects in space for that matter.

Matter never dissapates.... it changes forms..

... loads of em, thats have been proven over and over agian
as a scientific law.

Thats not to say that they cant be questioned... in fact,
people in the scietific community urge people to question
them.

But they are true.

"My own tests and experiments have shown that the existence

of God is less probable than the non-existence. Therefore
that is what I believe is probably the case"

opinions are like nipples.... everyone has one

Worth...

To me it is wonderful and miraculous that these human
creatures evolved in this bizarre inexplicable universe and
actually developed the ability to care about one another and
think about things, and appreciate the complexity and
tragedy of their situation, and the inestimable value of
their fleeting lives.

To me saying an all-powerful being created all this cheapens
and demeans existence. I mean, he could pull ten better
universes out of his butt before lunchtime. And an afterlife
for which his life is just the entry ticket, something meant
to be torn by Saint Peter the ticket taker as he tells you
"third row on the left, enjoy the show"? Ick.

This is my only life, this is my only chance to be aware and
exist and feel sunlight. To me that is the truth, and also
the basis of my morality, for I can see that others are in
the same boat as me and enjoy the existence and awareness
and sunlight as much as I do.

Except for goths, so fuck them.

I see your point, and in many ways sympathize with it .. I
would agree with you if it weren't for the fact that I
believe in God. I think that there is a great camaraderie
in socializing with fellow humans who are clueless just like
me and you. I think that making progress regardless of
life's futility is a healthy thing. However, I still think
that without a reason behind man's toil, it's worthless. It
may help make a person's short life more liveable and
enjoyable, but it still means nothing if there isn't some
higher goal. Believe me, unlike most self assured
Christians I will readily admit I have very little figured
out about life. I am not gonna try to persuade you that my
view is superior becuase I am not certain what my view is
most of the time. I believe in God and Christ but aside
from the essentials, I'm about as close to agnostic as you
can get without becoming one.
I enjoy life, sometimes, but I still think that aside from
temporary 'meaning' that it's pointless to live without a
higher existence present.

i never said someone's spirituality should be fueled by
ignorance, prejudice, fear, and hatred. it's weak to twist
someone else's words around just cos you can't think of a
convincing argument to the contrary. what i said is that
spirituality (and/or the existence of a god) is up to the
person to decide based on observations, experiences, and to
a lesser degree, texts like essays or religious doctrine.

argument for or against the existense of a god are usually
sensationalist garbage anyway. hence no one should be so
easily swayed by them in such a serious matter as religion.
