can anyone think of any other unreleased material to add to
this list? to qualify it has to never have been commercially
released (so AB5, CW, and MFM count)
----------
lp's:
melodies from mars
caustic window (the album)
AB5
"analogue bar 1"

ep's:
q-chastic
peel session 1
peel session 2

songs:
aphextwin.org "song from tape"
crappy
brivert & muons (mike & rich)

remixes:
craig david
misc. unknown from forthcoming collection

misc.:
SAW 85-92 is compiled from 13 90-minute tapes of music
supposed stolen mp3 player full of afx and sqp tracks
unreleased songs played live (eg: NASA tour 3 songs; "random
bullties")

flex... mostly that was just stuff from saw2, drukqs, and
perc #6, but it DID have some new sounds to it. joyrex
claims rdj backed out of doing a full fledged (original)
score to it so i don't think there's really any unreleased
music.

He HAS to... because I said so.

I have some stuff but I promised not to distribute it.

Perhaps someday when I get really disillusioned with Aphex
:)

Actually, it was 11 C90 cassettes given to Tom Middleton
(which he says unfortunately were destroyed when his home
flooded some time ago).

So, no chance getting those.

I do have the complete Melodies From Mars, and original
cassette made from the original DAT.

that's cool. how about a short review of some of the stuff
you have? we understand you can't distribute it but i don't
think descriptions would cause any harm.

as for the 90min tapes, surely other people had it. it's
typical for unsigned artists to distribute a lot of demo
tapes and i'm sure rdj was no different.

as for MFM and AB5, which you have source or 1st generation
copies of, how about some fresh mp3's when you have some
spare time from working on watmm, dealing with your family,
etc.?

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2002-11-01 23:01 [#00424682]
Points: 1389 Status: Lurker

Well, I guess the best (and most general) description I can
give is it's about 7 years old, and ranges from Caustic
Window sounding dance stuff to Ventolin-era material, and a
bit of MFM outtakes for good measure. About 15 tracks or so
that was sent to me on a MD from a (as Jand likes to put it)
person who "cannot be named". :)

Well, RDJ gave his friends loads of these tapes (his friends
were the ones who helped him put the tracklisting for SAW
85-92 together), so I reckon some of them might have them -
I almost got some of them a few years back when I was
friendly with Paul, the guy who designed the Aphex logo. He
said he had tons of cassettes Richard gave to him when they
toured back in 90-91 era (Paul was his dancer then), and
some of it was released material, but most of it was not.
Unfortunately, let's just say things didn't pan out.

MFM is an original cassette (with RDJ's handwriting on it)
and AB5 is an original test pressing that I have already
recorded a high quality version onto CD (did this on a Rega
deck).

If I ever get enough time to finish watmm and get the
discogs up and running, I'll see what I can find time to do
then.

sorry things didn't pan out with paul, and went sour between
you and rdj (that's your business, not mine.. i'm not on
anyone's side).. i hope those tapes get found though, that'd
be great

it'd be excellent to get mp3's of AB5 and MFM from you!
great service to all afx fans.

while we're on this subject, what IS analogue bar 1?

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2002-11-01 23:15 [#00424702]
Points: 1389 Status: Lurker

Analogue Bar 1 (from what I can gather) was the name for a
bunch of piano tracks Richard was working on and was going
to release under that title.

I think we all know what happened to those piano tracks :)

Richard had said for years that he wanted to do an album of
just piano tracks...DrukQs was the result of that.

Don't count on ever getting Q-Chastic though - Richard only
has a DAT of it, and not even Grant has copies (vinyl or
otherwise) anymore.

Grant says they are nothing special, but I'd like to hear
them anyways.

yea, i as well, even if i end up not liking it. mike p says
if it exists it's not in the rephlex stockroom or rdj's
house (which means it's probably on a dat at his parents'
house, blah blah blah).

You are 100% correct - before things er, 'fell apart', Rich
was going to send me clips of it and CAT023 for joyrex.com
in exchange for a bootleg of his 2001 Sonar show (which I
still sent regardless of what occured).

Oh well, cest la vie!

The unreleased Caustic Window quad LP - I have scans of it,
and er, if the aphex twin watmm discog was up, I'd direct
you to them :(

There is an article on watmm about it, in the aphex twin
section, where Mike P (one of the 4 owners) describes each
track in detail.

I need to stop chatting and get back to work! :)

Blank with Richard's handwriting in pen, which Mike P went
over with in magic marker.

He only scanned sides A and B for me...need to get him to do
sides C and D as well.

I heard some of those tapes Tom Middleton had. This was
before the first SAW was released. Lots of unreleased stuff,
but the main ones that stuck in my mind did eventually come
out (Polynomial C; X-tal; Supremacy II; Quoth; Tha) but a
few didn't: an early version of X-tal without the breakbeat
(all drum machine) was much better and didn't have all the
bad quality. Human Rotation sounded like Supremacy 2 but was
better. There were a couple of ravey things with cheesy
samples and some 8-bit sounding bangra-breakbeat-aphex-acid.
Only flicked through a couple of tapes though.

Joyrex: The CAT 23 labels were already magic marked when I
got them btw.

since rdj doesn't have to worry about making money, do you
think he'll release any of his back catalogue of unreleased
tracks someday? i understand why he (claims he) doesn't want
to put out his most recent material, saying other artists
will rip off his innovations, but it'd be nice if he gave us
some of his older tracks as freebies.

especially that xtal remix, that's my favorite song on saw
82-92..

well, as i said in an earlier post, i'm sure his demo tapes
were pretty widely distributed in the uk, so it's something
for you brits to keep an eye out for.. not in stores but in

might've retired from the clubs and started families or

JOYREX-
"back in 90-91 era (Paul was his dancer then), "
could you expand on this role?

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2002-11-04 23:43 [#00428433]

Paul Nicholson (www.p21.co.uk) was a friend of Richard and
when Rich was doing the NASA/See The Light tour back then,
Paul would be Richard's "stage act" where he would dance
around manically on stage while Richard huddled behind his
'fake' gear.

Richard has been known in the past to employ female body
builders (I've got some video from the Big Day Out show with
him lying on stage, and the bodybuilders flexing and the
Donkey Rhubears flailing about...classic stuff), midgets,
and other stage performers.

Paul is also a brilliant designer (see his aforementioned
Tee shirt design site), and he was the one who designed the
Aphex Twin logo and 'font' that was used on Xylem Tube and
later SAW 2. He also took Richard's photography and created
the concepts behind SAW 2's tracksystem (see the other
article on my site about Paul and how he did it). I've got
another unfinished interview with Paul I need to finish (get
in contact with him I guess after all these years) and post
that as well.

Tits: yeah, it was really nice of Mike to talk to me about
Rich, and one of these days I need to interview Mike on Mike
- just haven't made/found the time. :/

Hope these tidbits helped!

Phresch: I dunno about the Craig David remix...I smell
something fishy about it - I dunno, call it a hunch. :)
