i'm tempted to go into my favorite emcees but i've done that
once, twice, or three times already on this board before...

Fantastic Damage is a bit of a wierd one...the production is
good but El-P starts to annoy me with his invented grammer.
I really like probably about half of the album.

you didn't like "like water for chocolate"? i thought that
album was dope. what about "one day it'll all make sense" -
wasn't that for mca too?

mos def is good ENOUGH? he's the best in the game...

early wu-tang, why do white people (no offense) always say
that? it kinda pisses me off that they like the comical shit
but don't give them respect for the amazing lyrics and
amazing ORIGINAL beats on the 2nd album.

raekwon cuban linx album - overrated IMO. it may have helped
kick off all the italian mobster stuff in hip-hop but it's
not that interesting to listen to.

yeah heard a bit of dj cam - bit so so in my opinion, what
i've heard (french connection & loaII) not all that
consistent .. loa was a bit shit .. nice enough tho or
something

zeus: you like boards of canada? I think you'd love machine
drum. not exactly bad ass all the way through tho ...

BoC is my FAV group of ALL time!

yeah, ive heard about machine drum, def gotta check em out!,
and telefon tel aviv!

Uhh, many people say the very same thiong about El-P: good
production, shite MC-ing. I, for one like his "don't give a
shit about riding the beats" thing.

"Like water for chocolate" is quite awesome IMO, I haven't
met anyone who disliked it so far.

"Train of thought", too. Why did you not like that album.

Tits: exactly: rhymes on Wu-Tang Forever are incredible and
the production is quite brave too. By referring to us as
white men, does that mean you are black??? Didn't think so.
Also, the last wu-tang is fabtastic.

Machine drum sounds 10% like BoC and 90% like Prefuse 73. I
likes him.

:)

apparently dj-cam's dj kicks was pretty good - but haven't
heard it so ..

your sister wouldn't per chance have mad blunted jazz? just
wondering what that sounds like - coz it gets rave reviews
everywhere ..

First point "why do white people"...what made you think I am
white?

Second point Like Water For Chocolate I didn't like all that
much. It wasn't bad just not my type of shit. Mos Def is
good but I would class him as the best, just personal
taste.

As for the Wu-Tang, I was talking about production, and I
still think the first album has the best production Rza has
ever done. The second album was the worst pile of shit I
ever spent money on.

When I said about Cuban Linx I was referring to the original
point of the topic which where heavy beats. I don't like
ANY of the so called lyrics the Wu members try to spit.
Possible exception one or two Genius tracks off Liquid
Swords. The beats on that album though were fuckin class.

Meho: too right .. but compared to some of the "bad-ass" hip
hop, definetly got a lot of boc-ish type flavour in it or
something?

no, i'm just making an observation. the black people i know
appreciate wu-tang forever a lot more than the white people
i know. kinda pisses me off, it makes me think "these
whites" just think of hip-hop as a joke or something.

offline ecnadniarb on 2002-08-29 09:03 [#00370646]

I typoed up there...I *wouldn't* class Mos Def as the best.

Zeus: ah .. that's cool .. not bad, definetly better than
loa (from memory), my flat mate also has erm.. connection or
something? not sure bout that.

what's not to like about the production on wu-tang forever?
36 chambers is clever but it's all samples. for wu-tang
forever rza actually learned more advanced programming and
sampling, played synths, and hired studio musicians. and it
sounds amazing.

haha you cheaky fucker. I have listened to over 10 years
worth of fucking hip hop so don't be telling me I don't know
shit about it. Everyone has their own personal taste, and
just because I don't have the same as you or "your boys"
don't be trying to imply I don't know shit about it.

If you are talking lyricists, I think Aesop Rock, Ras Kass,
Chino XL and Eminem are all better than Mos Def. I think
Black Thought from The Roots a better rapper than Mos Def as
well. But as I said before, all about personal taste.

I kinda know what he's hinting at: Forever is just endless
loops without any change ever. But I like it all the same,
their flow is incredible on that album...

Korben: Yeah, but this is why it's called "Click-hop" rather
than hip-hop, eh?

offline ecnadniarb on 2002-08-29 09:09 [#00370657]
Points: 24805 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

I don't know what I liked about 36 Chambers...maybe it was
the flaws in the production like midi tracks resetting
halfway through tracks and stuff...by the time Forever came
out I actually preferred the production 4th Disciple was
doing for Killarmy.

Aesop rock is class, I'll admit it. However, Mos Def has
clearer points and therefore should be easier to digest for
newbies and the whole point of this thread was suggesting
Zeus what to sample.

i like aesop rock but who knows what the fuck he's talking
about half the time. he has a ways to go before he can tell
a story like mos. as far as mos vs. em i don't see the
comparison. could em toast mos in a freestyle battle? of
course. whose songs are more intersting? mos def's songs for
sure.

I knew I was forgetting something...Roots Manuva, Rodney P,
Skinnyman, Blak Twang, Ricochet Klashnekoff. etc...get some
UK hip hop!!

also mos def is a much better story teller than black
thought. they both have great charisma but mos tops tariq in
that as well. they're different styles though.

i like some roots manuva.. i guess my favorite song w/ him
is on the new cinematic orchestra album. i don't really like
much UK hip-hop though.. at least not yet.

Korben: wtf is bip-hop? Something you just made up or an
"existing" subgenre? I have new Boom Bip's album if that
helps.

Tits: word up, about em vs Mos.

bip hop, bip bop, not quite sure how its phrased - i'll have
a look around.

its a label - and pretty much a sub-genre, heard it in a cd
store here a while ago, sounded evil! I always thought it
was BIT-hop, coz the beats sort of sounded bit-crushed ..
um... Actually they got a series of compilations, and vol 4
was advertised on warprecords ... had a mira calix track on
it also ??

I'll check it out.

Forever, overall, was pretty crap. RZA may have played the
sytnhs and programmed the drums himself but it all sounds
the same. Boom-tsh-boom-tsh and then some strings over the
top. That said, Heaterz is amazing. The MCing was still
great but I'm more a fan of music than vocals.

well, massiva attack, tricky (except some of his works) and
what ive heard from roots manuva (2 songs) and some samples
from anti pop, have all been the best rapping ive heard
imo...

i like the sound of thier voices better...

its not all like mumbling

If you want RAW, simply buy Brooklyn Zoo by Ol' Dirty
Bastard. You ain't gonna get much more raw than that. Also
Wu-Tang, Return to the 36 Chambers.
I also recommend Roots Manuva, a UK MC who's got a ragga
flavour and loads of tunes. Quality.

wu-tang forever is dense and it has its own unique sound but
it's not the same thing over and over again. this is one of
my favorite albums so "ima rep till the death of it" (?).

Forever was quite hypnotic to me: their flow, their
cadence... The loops too, but the album was overall not
funky, not at all, I'll admit that.

Korben: Hmm, I will search the web for it...

it's a serious album, they had to sacrifice the funk.
lyrically some of these songs give me goosebumps. eg:
impossible, a better tomorrow.

Its all filler and no killer. Iron Flag and 36 Chambers are
the shit!

ODB's 'Ni**a Please' is great. That tune that samples TJ
Hooker is crazy. Free ODB!

The title track to Brooklyn Zoo is one of the finest, rawest
hip-hop tunes ever produced. Along with the likes of Snakes
and Damage coupled with ODB's comedic singing and obvious
insanity, it's an absolute must!
