undervalued movies

give me some titles of films you think don't get the
apreciationioonion they should get + why.

I would go for 'saturn 3'. it has strange atmosphere and the
robot is truely scary. also, the director wasn't afraid to
take a lot of time to show us how the robot gets assembled -
I like that.

gattaca - probably one of the most intelligent movies i've
seen, very stylish, and great acting also.

jacobs ladder doesn't get spoken about enough. Theres also a
nice little movie called Local Hero that no one seems to
have heard of.

bulworth
smartest comedy i've ever seen, truest criticism of
hollywood and politics ever on film, brilliant job all
around by warren beatty who stars, directed, produced, and
wrote the script.

and yes, gatacca was good, although the ending was hammy as
hell.

I think Twelve Monkeys is underappreciated... it's a
brilliant film with endless possibilities for interpretation
of reality... kind of like real life. I also like Bruce
Willis, and Terry Gilliam is a genius... He always makes
films about insane people.

also underrated:

series 7: the contenders. great spoof of reality tv that
pre-dates survivor.

slam. saul williams is one of my idols. this is a great
intro to slam poetry and saul williams in specific.

blue velvet. creepy fun.

dark days. amazing documentary on underground nyc homeless.
music by dj shadow.

amelie. magical.

uhf. cute comedy.

roger & me. somewhat dated but so true capitalist criticism.
michael moore's masterpiece. i hope it gets a dvd release
soon.

bamboozled. another great criticism of hollywood including
the racist past of entertainment. damon wayans' greatest
performance. brilliant writing.

wings of desire. bizarre multilingual, french originated
existentialist film from the 1980s.

a.i. underrated sci-fi. would've been better w/ kubrick at
the helm and more involvement from cunningham.

Any film with Arnold Schwarzenegger is undervalued. I love
the guy, and he has fantastic acting range (yes...) and big
muscles! And he gets the best lines. He is an arTISTE. He is
everything we want to be.

He is... Ahnuld.

its playing in my head all the time. just bought the OST 2
months ago.

good point, Thater, I agree, 12 monkeys is underapreciated.

tits,
Amelie is overrated. I figure all the ppl who love it
haven't seen much foreign film. It is good, but pretty
average.
Wings of Desire is very good!

the professional - don't know if it's underrated or not, but
it's a really good movie nonetheless.

don't be a hater!!! amelie is one of the best foreign films
i've seen in years. it's special.

zaphod: that sounds incredibly interested. i'll look into
that.

i know this makes me creepy but for the last couple of years
i've toyed with writing a short story called "return to
columbine" where some sicko obsessed with the news media
(ie: he was glued to the columbine footage) returns to the
school years later to "finish the job".

I see a lot of foreign films (I live in Foreign) and I
really like Amelie (but I am a big fan of Jean-Pierre
Jeunets work).

why would someone like that film a lot because its the first
foreign film they've seen?

might I mention steven soderberghs 'the limey' at this
point?

superb thriller, told in an intelligent way (flashbacks and
-forwards) with beautiful camerawork.

"tell him I'm coming"

We jst went and saw "The Sweetest Thing"..i mean this thing
has been colossally slammed by every critic her to
Timbaktu...but I really enjoyed it..really crude, rude,
obnoxious and funny in the Farelly Borthers kind of way,
rife with blowjob, semen jokes etc..a far cry from a chick
flick I was dreading...Cameron Diaz is a natural comic,
while Christina Applegate all that time of the funniest
sitcom ever (Married with Children)..has impeccible
timing..sure no cerebral Oscar Cannes et all contender but
much mucho entertaining..

And Being There, with Peter Sellers, is also seldom

The new Michael Moore picture is called Bowling For
Columbine and it's about violence in the media. And yes
I've seen Brazil and I own the Criterion DVD.

here are some other Underrated films....

The Audition (Odishon)- Japanese film by Takashi Miike.
Incredibly misleading and bizzare. Very thought provoking,
and stomach churning.

Session 9 - I watched this film alone in the dark and it
made me question my sanity. But then, so did Fight Club and
Memento.

Man On The Moon - Sure it was a suck ass film with little to
no historical accuracy about the life of Andy Kaufman, but
Jim Carrey was born to play that role. Plus I just love
Andy Kaufman.

Bladerunner and Total Recall - Both very loose
interpretations of Philip K. Dick short stories... both
awesome.

City Of The Lost Children, and Delicatessen - Both films by
Jean Pierre Jeunet, the director of Amelie, only both of
these are about 100 times better. I really liked Amelie,
but mostly because Audrey Tatou is absolutley incredible
*sigh*

That's all i can think of for now... I'm going outside...
the sun is gone.

um..define undervalued?

I keep seeing films metioned that are acknowledged cult
classics

Jacobs Ladder
Brazil
Delicatessian etc all have critical respect as well as cult
followings..

Oh yeah, every Terry Gilliam movie ever...

Baron Munchausen
Time Bandits
Jabberwocky
Fisher King
and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, even though he didn't
seem to understand what that book was about, I liked the
visual asthetic.

lets see there are several already listed that i agree with

- gattaca was great i LOVE jude law, but it was just a
interesting and original movie

- bullworth was fantastic, and i think stepped on the toes
of too many in hollywood so it was 86'd

- the professional was SO GOOD. i own the unrated directors
cut DVD and it's brilliant!!

- OMG i thought i was the only one to see 'the limey' it was
fantastic. i love that actor...i can't think of his name
right now but he is ALWAYS a good bad guy. although did you
see him in priscilla queen of the desert as a cross
dresser.....he was great in that too.

- contact was a great movie from a GREAT book by carl
sagan...i recommend the book before the movie

- young frankenstein (which i own) has been one of my TOP
TEN fav's of all time

- ARNOLD movies are underrated. he's an excellent action
star and comes across as intelligent and witty in the movies
i've seen him in.

QRTER.....you have EXCELLENT taste in movies.....ehehhehe

some i disagree with

- A.I. while my beloved jude law was in it, it just lacked
HEART, that movie did not move me.

- toys was a movie i saw TWICE and didn't like both times. i
dunno maybe i missed the point of that film but i just kept
scratching my head.

one movie i'd like to NOMINATE would have to be
Tombstone.....it was a great western in the tradition of
great westerns with just a lil twist.

had one of my fav lines (as said by val kilmer) 'i'm your
little huckleberry'....ehehhe
