Confield WTF??

I've tried. I've listened to it all. Still, though, all I
hear is a bunch o' fukking noise. Well, yeah, the
drum-rhythm may be advanced, and so on, but still, I don't
find the album, hm, satisfying? Listenable? There are small
glitches of music underneath the drumming, but it doesn't
make any melodies. Rather a mood. I listen to music that
gives your head a frikkin' spin (Venetian, Aphex, Square
...) but this album, I don't know. What's so special 'bout
it? Do I have to listen to it more? What? What? Tell me!!

Ok, tracks like Vi Scose Poise and Cfern have melodies, but
how about Sim Gishel? There's this weird sound "morphing",
but I can't say I hear a melody.

First Autechre album I ever heard... scared me away. But I
gave it a chance, and now it might be my favorite electronic
album ever... other than Drukqs. It's so fucked up... but
the sounds are so amazing, and there's some vague melodies
in there that demand your total attention to pick up...

Give it time... it's a cliche, but it's true! Takes time to
digest all the stuff that's happening.

Yeah, you either love it or you hate it.

I've tried to do the same for Gantz Graf... I didn't like it
at first, but though that I would eventually, if I gave it
time... but Gantz Graf isn't as good, and I gave it more
than enough time... oh well.

the thing with Confield is that you have to change the way
you think about musicrules to appreciate it. Forget the
rules and try to think of a new abstract musicworld where
everything is warping, bouncing, rotating and changing
colour. It's great album if you can get past some of the
things you're used to(it took a while for me too).

offline Clic on 2002-08-10 23:36 [#00344430]

It's good, but very hard to swallow for a lot of people.

It's taken me a while to get into it, mostly because I
didn't really want to force it by listening to it a ton.
Doing that would only burn it into the ground and then I
would've just hated it.

I took it in small doses and now I think it's a
groundbreaking album. VI Scose Poise is one of my favorite
Ae tracks.

offline AphexAcid from Sweden on 2002-08-10 23:38 [#00344432]

But there's not much of melodies in the album, am I right?
It's more like a mood, a state, y'know what I mean? Or am I
full o' bullshit? :)

Well it's not really conventional music.

Obviously they take a different approach to what they do, so
what they consider 'melody' maybe something totally
different to you.

offline AphexAcid from Sweden on 2002-08-10 23:46 [#00344441]

Well, yes, there are no rules that say what melody is or is
not, but I'd say it's less melody in this album than ... ah,
forget it. I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm hungry.
I need a sandwich.

At first I thought it was boring (i like drill) but still
thought it was a great ablumn. Everything just fit
perfectly. I liked Parhelic Triangle like you did, it seemed
so weird. Then after listening to it a couple times I got
into the entire albumn.

I loved Confield the moment I sat down and listened to it
the first time, After reading all the shit said about Gantz
Graf I thought it would be crap but it turned out to be my
favourite track this year.

I don't beleive in this listen until you like it philosophy,
you end up liking it because you are familiar with it.

What has happened with me in the past is, I have bought CD's
not liked them and put them to one side, pick them up after
6 months and fall in love with them.

forget musik rules?
ETF?!
there are no rules to musik other than that of the fourth
dimensionadn that for a human ear to pick it up the
frequency range!
give me a break.
there are a whole wad of different types of musicians in the
world.
no matter what category any musician fits into, they are
always going to produce something that says to the majority
of the public, 'we are the shitiest most talentless head up
our own arse wanna be artist musicians on the planet adn
people listen to us cuz we are so different and that makes
us kewl even though we suck ass bg time like no one we have
ever heard in our life and that is our goal and we are good
at achieving our goals!'
ae just happen to only produce musik in this category!!!!!
HA H AHAHAHADHASJALKNCJNAHUEb,../........

confield is one of the lamest albums as far as musik goes
that i have ever had the disprivelege of wasting $25 on.
chiastic side is tolerable by times though, so the group of
hussies have a little bit of talent.
perhaps as much as RDJs baby toe nail clipping.
but even that is giving them too much credit!

Yes, erm good one...did you use those long words to attempt
to disprove my opinion you are a retard? If that was the
case you failed.

Just because you don't like something doesn't make it shit.
I'm not gonna say that you should open your mind to it
because if you don't like it, you don't like it, simple as
that. But to criticise them is a bit out of order, no-one

I had written this track that was heaven sent if you know

stoped itself midthrust.
i sent it to my friend in barbados, and he says it is his
favourite track ever.
i hated it.
i said to him WTF!?!
and i sent him the vversion you have and he asked me why i
destroyed the best song ever!
i said WTF?!?!
he couldn't understand the distortion.
i quite like it.
so i'm doing three versions.
finishing the original.
187>which you have.
the hybrid>working on now.
i'll let you know m8!
but i told you how long it takes me to do tracks!

Confield is a GREAT. It is truly original, and it's not just
all random noise. Some of it is, Autechre have said
themselves [although it was randomised by computer programs
they wrote themselves]. But there IS melody. I think the
melody in Lentic Catachresis is beautiful [I'm talking about
the bassline]. VI Scose Poise is brilliant. If anybody says
VI Scose Poise has no melody, they haven't been listening
hard enough.

I can fully understand why so many people dislike it though.
It's an extremely difficult album, at first I thought I'd
never like it, but a few walks around town with it on my
headphones did the trick, and I was hooked forever!

yes, confield does have melodies. track 2 has one of the
best, catchiest, darkest melodies autechres ever done. for
me at least.
however there are tracks that don't really have melodies.
There's twisting, tearing, echoing sounds in place on some
tracks. Why is this worse than melody? question what makes
music good. Melody is just one element that can be used to
make a song engaging. just one. It's an element that I think
is given far too much attention over other elements that can
be used to equal effect. pure noise, interesting noise, can
be just as interesting to me as a good melody. the
possibilities for creating noise with electronic music is
limitless and exciting. I don't think autechre or anyone
should be limiting themselves to melodies especially when
their noise scapes are so fascinating. I actually think
confield has the most successfull merging of beats and
background music of any of their albums. There's moments on
past albums where the beats and music sound to juxtaposed on
each other because of the melodies, but the noise scapes on
confield mix seamlessly with the beats. it's like the
abstraction is complete. I'm very happy with these songs. To
me, they had to get rid of melody to advance in their music.
I also hope to see them try some 'beat-less' noise scapes in
the future.
I know confield is a very dense album and can be hard to get
into. I liked it right away but it's not like I went
straight from Pavement to that. My taste has evolved, and
pretty slowly. so what I'd suggest is to not worry about the
melodies, see if you can see the value in noise. I'm not
saying you will like it, it'd be absurd to think that
everyone would, but maybe with a more open minded listen you
can understand more and appreciate what's being done.

If you have to listen REALLY HARD to find the slightest bit
of "melody" what's the fun in that? Oooooo this album is
really good if u put ur ear right in ur stereo and if u
,turn ur treble down and ur bass up you can hear some melody
behind all that static....too much effort to listen to
music....

I don't think you have to force yourself to listen to
it...just that on the first few times thru you may find it
hard to find something to hang onto but it'll slowly come
into focus...

It's the same with any kind of art that attempt to step
outside of normal conventions or boundaries; it's kinda like
culture-shock...you have to give yourself time to understand
it....

have to be distracted while listening to it. thats how i got

much has been said about confield. some of my personale
faves are on there (lentic catachresis, pen expers, eidetic
casein). it's their least melodic work though. then again
it's not nearly as emotionless as tri repetae.
