Do u buy Vinyl?

I was just wondering how many people actually buy Records?
Personally, i do.
I tend to do a (small) bit of DJing for friends and stuff.
Expensive hobby, but worth it when you see the smile on your
friends face when you hand him your new tape. (aaaah.)

I buy the vinyl and burn it to CD, rather than buy both. A
large portion of the voiceless 'IDM' we listen to sounds
just as good (though different) at both 33 and 45. For
instance my favorite AE song is 'Laughing Quarter' off of
Envane played at 33 rather than the intended 45. It makes
for a nearly fifteen minute emotional epic.

I'm generally strictly digital nowadays; CD & MP3s
only...probably haven't bought any vinyl since the early
90s...

(except this week, when I just had to have Astrob Pt2 ....
fun using a turntable again, I guess, but I'd prefer to have
it on CD as well...Hopefully I'll find a decent recording on
MP3 soon and then I'll retire this 12"...)

I used to dream of a single little box the size of packet of
fags you could stick your entire collection in, probably
because I've moved so many times since I left home and
carting a large amount of CDs about is such a hassle...I was
getting close with my laptop but I reckon I'm gonna get a
decent little Mp3 HardDisk player soonish (an Ipod or
something similar with a bigger HD)...

expensive for me... besides they're harder to find than
usual cds (and usual idm cds are hard to find sometimes
too)... and i always listen with headphones in my bed or
when i'm at my computer... so... no (but maybe i'd like to)

I don't buy Vinyl for several reasons...

Using plugins and altering the speed +/- 20% on an MP3 makes
the same change as using 45/33rpm changes.

I broke my turntable scratching Beastie Boys
"Intergalactic". It was quite good, I was scratching the
acapella vocal mix, whilst the instrumental played on CD.

Whilst vinyl sounds nice and I'm not very obsessive about CD
quality, it is not as good quality as CDs despite
what "audiophiles" say.

The lower quality and difficulty/expense in connecting
turntables to a PC make it an inferior medium for sampling
or ripping MP3s.

I don't have the shelf space for vinyl.

Vinyl distorts in the heat, before now I have gotten vinyl
home only to find it warped so badly that I had to press it
under my matress for months to sort it out.

Vinyl scratch = baaaaddd!
CD scratch = No difference, unless you've taken a scalpel to
it.

The lack of spines on vinyl makes it a pain to find records.
I get annoyed at paper (rather than jewel) cased CDs too.

I tend to use music as "background sound" rather than a
main activity. Getting up to turn vinyl over every 10
minutes or so would really annoy me. Especially when I'm
studying/making sounds on my PC (yes, I make sounds on
software synths whilst listening to other music).

Okay quality turntables are so much more expensive than a
good CD player.

You can't get portable vinyl players (okay 7" decks, but
you'd look a bit of a gimp carrying a pre-amped 7" deck
connected to headphones).

CDs make pretty multicoloured confetti when you through them
against the wall, vinyl just makes an ugly mess.

Ceri Jc; "Whilst vinyl sounds nice and I'm not very

My good self; "Please listen to Cordialotron on Vinyl
compared to CD, It's all the proof you need that Vinyl is
better then CD, The clicks and the like are annoying tho if
you dont take care of vinyl."

offline Spikee Dragon from Newcastle (United Kingdom) on 2002-07-04 16:23 [#00296612]

I may add that some Vinyl has it's sound limited (making it
very poor compared to CDs), I have some prodigy stuff on
vinyl from around 1993 that is no use to me in a live set.
If you want to know why and when vinyl is/was limited to a
certain sound level I'm sure someone here can tell you why
in much greater detail than myself. Jand would possibly be
best to ask if interested.

I didn't argue that vinyl is less pleasurable to listen too-
merely that it is a lower quality (audio wise) medium.

You can get utilities on PCs that make CDs sound like vinyl
anyway and besides, artists should add any intentional
clicks or hiss to the CD version, e.g. "don't leave" by
Faithless

anyone here like tape?

kidding
-although the quickest/cheapest way i have of recording all
thoose lovely joyrex/warp streams is with my trusty
recordable walkman. As a result i've tones of TDK's etc with
slightly rough r4cordings on 'em. I also use it to record
vinyl mixes i do myself and i'm quite proud of my lo-fi tape
collection with homemade covers and scribbles!
I know about MD's, stream interceptors etc, but this is a
limited PC, i'm broke and i'm sorta attached to the messy
lttle bastards!
