One that is an interesting subject at the moment. I know this is not a very thorough answer but how many replies a thread does or does not get is very dynamic, there aren't necessarily any prerequisites to a topic getting many posts other than that it is interesting to the readers (?). Hope this helps.

One that people make considered answers for. I hate the "five favorite..." type of topics because no one reads them they just post.

any topic with the word 'god' i it is sure to get it's share of replies..
i guess any topic that's controversial, or ones that people would have a strong opinion on (ie.religon) would get alot of posts.

I think there's a tendacy to treat this MB as a glorified chat room...nothing wrong with that but when 90% of thrads consist of single sentence & don't add jush to the site...
Hopefully xltonic will include a chatroom so that should arract the bored and overly chattythat ....

Dallas Criterion for Successful topics: 1. Title has to captivate the reader [this may ensure a topic hit]
2. Actual topic has to be captivating or suitably not for the reader to comment
3. Number of reply's / rate of reply's may act as an added incentive to check the post.
4. A particular person may also act as a catalyst for both 1. and 2.
What is cavating who knows -a bit of a collective action problem/dynamic .. ok that was pointless
