it makes the sound shorter. without it, the bass drum will vibrate longer, giving it an echoy, reverb like sound.
adding a pillow or shirts make it short and thumpy.

I hate damp bass drum sounds. Very annoying--I like a nice, rich, full kick, dammit!

I saw pictures of the Beatles loading some sweaters into Ringo's drums during the Abbey Road studio sessions.
I LOVE the Beatles.

Actually if you dont dampen the bass drum it sounds like shit.
Its VERY loud and annoying, as i'm sure you could imagine.
If you cant think of this: Pick ANY note of the musical scale, now amplify it 50 times. Now try using that note in a song instead of having a normal bass drum sound.

the remo bass drum i've currently got is the only one i've played where no dampening is required - it sounds sweet as a nut the way nature intended :)

basicaly it'll sound just like a tom, full resonance and full upper freq..
useful in rare occasion, but else who can say they don't like a very low and phat sound for a kick?=)
