Is aphex still underground?

i was just wondering if he's still considered to be an
underground artist. im meeting a lot more 'everyday' people
that know who aphex is. or is he more commercial now?

i know, it doesnt really matter how the artist is perceived.
in the end, the only thing that is imortant is music. but
still, im curious to know what you people think.

i meant underground within the population in general, not
only in the idm/electronica scene.

Well,I really don't care if RDJ is underground or not,for me
he's the greatest IDM/electronica/experimental/ambient
composer ever to exist on Planets Earth,Mars and Pluto....I
buy as much of his music as I can, love to support his work
as well as his label Rephlex.....=)

I would call him ''underground''... hell, this is the only
place I can intelligently discuss electronic music, and that
includes Aphex.

yeah, AFX is going for the huge Swedish pop-girl market
segment...

(they account for 79% of all records sold in the
world..crack that market and you've really made it..)...

everybody selling records,.charging money for it,.gaining
profit = COMMERCIAL

tho there R many gradations in being a SELL-OUT. If
underground means : least-sell-out / least commercial,.then
I wouldn't call Aphex Twin underground.

but in the end,.nobody gives a fuck

in spain nobody knows him, not even my friends...I try but
they dont even remember his name, and they will never try to
understand his music...only my girlfriend tryes a bit, she
likes goon gumpas, 4, alberto, and those melodic ones, but
at least she knows what I am in.

he is very underground, even though some of his albums can
be bought in big markets here in spain

apparently the tides come in now, so there's absoultely no
chance of him coming to the surface

offline OK on 2002-06-04 23:58 [#00250227]

I don't think he is underground...

i mean most people don't know him... but a lot of people not
"in the scene" have heard him and know a couple of songs by
him...

here in mexico.. they use a lot of aphex music bit for
promos for radio and TV... theyre's a radioshow covering
technology (not music) who plays tracks from drukqs all the
time in the background. I've heard the philip glass version
of ICCT hedral on MTV promos as well.

definately he's not underground... he's just not very
popular.

Hes totally NOT underground. Underground stuff is obscure,
there arent tons of AFX albums in stores and such because
hes underground or doesnt sell lots. The opposite, Ive read
about Aphex Twin in magazines, ive seen him referenced in
Maxim Magazine, ive seen his name on television. He is NOT
ungerground. Underground would be like the Shizit, totally
independant and have only sold about 300 albums.

also.. i remember a mention about him in an electronic music
article in a popular music magazine...

there's a great difference between underground and popular.
Aphex is often mentioned in intervews of other artists or
bands (linkin park, weezer, radiohead, deftones....).

He's definately not underground

he IS damn you all to hades
the only contact he has is via a plastic cup tied to another
plastic cup with a piece of string which reaches the 1000ft
or so from his nuclear bunker in south kensington

well nothing like that happens in spain... nobody has ever
mentioned him in the media (except that time I told you he
appeared in the tv news but that was at 3am) and his music
has never been played in no comercials or anything else

i'd say he is probably underground but sticks his head up
when he wants to, like some sort of electro-badger: big
underground cos he still does stuff like the MEN tracks, and
rephlex, hes not on the radio really: anyway it doesn't
matter, it is all churning over into some sort of marsh
land: my grandma wont give my copy of LEON back cos she
likes gary oldmans junky bent cop in it...

Well,I can say is that RDJ is underground in some places,in
others he's not that much, but in my country we love him very
much because he changed electronic music forever,he did what
some others thought was impossible....Cheeers for RDJ!!! =)

he's underground 'cos no-one i know can name any of his
tracks. None of them have been on top of the pops.

If someone announces that windowlicker was...

I'm burning my collection and getting into Rn'B instead.

idm is quite underground...

but even if most of my friends don't know aphex twin, he
isn't "underground" — when drukQs came out, there was a
pillow with a huge "come on you cunts let's have some aphex
acid" poster at the fnac... i even came across a drukQs
review in a TV or whatever magazine...!

but that doesn't make him commercial... all well known
artists aren't commercial — björk for example... she's
very well known but would you say she's commercial? :)

Top of the pops,or any of that krap stops me or other
friends of mine to know and listen to RDJ,AE,SP,PLAID or the
whole Rephlex/Warp gang...Those r the best record label in
the world....Cheers=)
Their music is so complex that not everybody could even come
close to understand what they r listening to...:)

maybe he does 'underground' stuff...

meaning that he's been releasing stuff under unknown
aliases.. or playing gigs with unknow aliases... and none of
us has ever heard one of these side works...

but as far as Aphex twin concerns.. he's not underground.. i
mean.. he was nominated for a fucking brit!!
