Does anyone else HATE listening to Autechre with
headphones? I can NOT tolerate it. I only like Autechre on
LOUD stereos.

Why? I have no idea. I don't like headphones in general, but
I don't mind them too much. But I can't stand Autechre like
that... I'll only do it if forced.

Am I fucked up?

Err...Let me re-phrase that... I KNOW the answer to that.

Is the fact that I hate Autechre on headphones fucked up?
Anyone else feel the same way?

you just have to be in a serious and resolved state of mind

headphones are the best for idm, you definitely get the best
feeling of sound trajectory

nope, personally i love walking around with phat (i mean
big_ass) headphones listening to AFX, Autechre or
anything....it´s probably the little place in which i can
appreciate the music at its highest.....every bit, every
pitch, every tone......
ohh, and don´t worry ophecks, you´re not fucked
up.........or.........(are you?)

listening to music while driving or on the computer.

I love AE and headphones....

Wouldn't get to listen to em much without em really...the
partner is not a huge fan....

but then again, AE on decent speakers + SubBass unit is sooo
very cool as well...the sound is a lot more physical that
way...

but yeah, I dig headphones...get some cool ones and not the
shit little buds that have given me an ear infection (uggg!!
SCABBY EARS...you really don't wanna know any
more...)...feckring bastrats as we call down the dyslexia
institute...

I play Autechre at the max volume (to the chagrin of my mom
and my neighbours) on my stereo, and it sounds so huge and
overwhelming! Much better than headphones.

I know I've heard people say, like Titsworth, that
headphones are the best for a pure listening experience, but
I just can't get into them...

Thank god I can play music at enourmous decibel levels and
not get in shit... but this heaven won't last forever. :-(

home can be a little irritating, but walking the streets of
your home town with autechre on ya ears makes ya walk even
more.............nutty?! (sorry couldnt think of the right
word)

Ophecks, do you have good hearing? You might be hearing
limitations of the mp3 format in those songs through your
headphones.

Autechre's music is notorious for not compressing well into
mp3. "second bad vilbel" is a good example, mp3s of it sound
very different to me than the original CD, even at high
quality settings.

I always have Autechre or something with me when I make the
long, dangerous walk from my bus stop to my house after
classes each day, and it's OK, better than nothing... but
I'd never use headphones by choice.

I'm listening to the Beach Boys with headphones now (don't
want to wake my mummy), and it's not as bad... rock and pop
sound ok. But Autechre... blah!!!!

It's not just MP3, I have LOTS of CDs... Drukqs doesn't
sound as awesome on headphones, either. RDJ Album, ditto.

The headphones themselves aren't that great, but they're not
cheap ass little fuckers, they're half decent Sonys.

Yeah, it might be because of the MP3 format, that's all my
Autechre... but all the rest of the MP3s are
indistinguishable from the real thing for me... I don't have
sensitive hearing at all. :-)

Second Bad Vilbel's a great example...even the CD version
isn't fully faithful; it's "incomplete without surface
noise"...

diff, mp3 is like a slender crusty turd sliding into my ear.
And ae+headphones rules so yeah your just a freak

Autechre is better listened to with headphones, too much to
hear through normal speakers. and sonys half decent
headphones are bollox. maybe the eq on whatever your
listening to it through is wrong, too much bass or something
?

most mp3s just sound flat too me, and
theres little definition in the higher frequences which are
removed more the lower quality the mp3s get.

That's cause there's quite a sever hi-pass filter taking
place...

You can set the params to up this filter, I believe...or
just use one of the -alt preset or -r3mix presets in Lame
that make this less severe...

Around >19.5Khz should be ok for most people...

check that r3mix.net page for a detailed explanation...

I'm the oppposite then, I rarely listen to music without
headphones, and I kind of dislike listening to mp3's on my
laptop even with my said headphones.. I get a different
feeling sitting at a screen with all its distractions as
opposed to lying in bed with the lights out with my cd
player and headphones. Hrmm.. I USED to listen to some cds
without headphones when I had better speakers but no more.
*sniff* When I move I'll get better stand alone speakers and
will probably alternate.

One of the lame mp3 encoder developers likes Autechre.

I remember him bitching about how Autechre must be making
their music difficult to encode on purpose. :)

ophecks: i figured out yr problem!
if you say rawk and pop slop sound good on yr earphones but
electronica doesn't, then you need to invest in some serious
phones!
what are you using now?
you should get a decent pair of digital wide channel phones
w/at least a two inch speaker!
idm style music is made/mixed on computers while most rawk,
with a few exceptions, still use a mixture of digital and
analogue.
that's why rarwk has a warmer feel than dance based music.
for ultimate listening orgasms, pick up the sony djing
headphones [can't remember the model #] butthey are the
silver ones that come in two models and the larger one has
some silly size of a speaker!
it's like having two cabinets attached to yr head, but they
are ultra light.
the experience will change yr life 4evah! and yr mum and
neighbours will probably chip in on the cost too!

knell.ca-elektronik musik
let me know what you think!

for me, i prefer listening to idm (especially ae) on good
quality headphones. you manage to hear a lot more subtle
noises with headphones and can appreciate the music a lot
more. ae sounds different/better on headphones.

Hhurrrmm... I guess I'm in the minority, by far... I hate
headphones! It's so claustrophobic, having the sound shoved
so close to your eardrums.

The Beatles are another band I hate on headphones, has
something to do with the way they mixed the tracks...
sometimes you'll have an orchestra mixed totally into the
left ear, really distracting... but sounds amazing on
speakers.

and i'm finding with draft 7.30 that it's almost two
different albums, softly on headphones vs bloody loud with
headphones. i'm preferring bloody loud at the mo.

a couple of weeks ago, i listened to confield on a nice big
pair of headphones as i walked along the dorset coast from
lulworth cove to durdle door...and i have to say i just put
track 1 on and with the blue skies and sun it was lovely,
great experience, then put on saw1, but somehow it wouldnt
have been the same just sitting out in the sun listening to
it on speakers. it was a personal experience, everyone else
was there walking along, but only I was listening to this
wonderful music.

I STILL hate headphones... I'll only use them as a last

I think they're obnoxious and selfish, plugging your ear

I don't have one single Mp3 on my PC. I absolutely can't
stand it - they sound like absolute shit. My buddies think
I'm wierd because everything has to be on CD or vinyl. What
can I say - my ears are sensitive.

Autechre on headphones 100%. Half of the sounds dissapear
into thin air as they travel from the speaker to my ear
canal - t'is no good.

i personally think headphones degrade music a little. they
can be decent sometimes, but nothing touches the physicality
of a huge bass noise coming out of a sub woofer at really
high volumes. nor does anything touch the sound of SAW2 with
some natural noise over it, reverberating off of walls. if
you have a good set of speakers and a decent reciever/amp,
theres not much reason to listen to music on headphones.

exactly. headphones are goofy looking, they ruin your
hearing (wonder why the sounds "disappear" when going from
speakers to some of your ears?) and they plug your ears with
only one type of noise. music was meant to be heard in a
natural environment, and nothing touches a good stereo
system. doesn't matter what type of music it is either.

I totally agree. I instead of having everything jammed into
two places, I like the sounds to be all around me...
acoustics enveloping me in their warmth. Feeling a little
rumble on the bass notes from a big bad woofer. Having sound
shoved into two little holes just isn't right.

I agree with Ophecks here...I've been saying this all along
too! I think I know why it is...yes, Autechre have wicked
sounds and all, but they don't do much panning, and some
tracks sound very mono through headphones...on speakers
though (good ones and loud, natch) they rule.

I'm sure the tennats living in adjacent apartments would
disagree with you. I can see where you are coming fom
though. I've always preferred SAW 2 on the stereo.

What do you think of Dolby 5.1 and music? I don't have a
5.1 setup - are there even many albums created for 5.1?
