What is the deal with computer games? I mean, I used to
trip off of them when I was a kid, and they sometimes a
pleasant diversion and all that... but some people are just
plain obsessed with these things...

I've no idea.... I was deprived of many a computer game in
my childhood. I only had my amstrad (good enough mind you!)

I think my intrest in them grew from wanting to play them
around my friends houses. Now I'm just catching up on lost
time!

Taxi: so you have a life? Good for you, dude, but for the
rest of us, computer games are the closest thing there is.

They're interactive art.

Watching TV is a passive activity, you have no control over
what's happening.

Reading a book or listening to music you have slightly more
control than tv as there is more space for imagination.

Playing a video game you have a great more deal of control
(and hence involvement) in what is happening than the other
examples here...

I think people also like it as it is a very good form of
escapism.

No... I kind of just sit and stare at my computer and write
music.

I've been playing since I was 8 or 9... Spectrum 48k + then
moved onto consoles... I dunno though, the technology needs
a good kick in the ass at the moment, there's hardly any
difference really between the current systems (GC, PS2) and
the ones they replaced

Yeah, making music there's even more decisions/freedom than
playing games. It's harder though ;)

I write music as a hobby but I also play games as a hobby. I
get a differnet feeling from each. I write music as I enjoy
cerating the inticacies of a piece and making subtleties
that can only be noticed by someone else after a few
listens. This takes time obviously nd I can get quite
annoyed if something isn't working right. Games on the other
hand however relax me. You just go through them hardly any
thought needed 90% of the time. You are right in saying
people are obsessed though. Some kid at my old school missed
an A-level exam because he was too busy with his PS. Sad
cuntymint in my opinion. That's just my feelings on the
subject and the no doubt make no sense or bear any
relevance..

I think they were better in the Super Nintendo/Genesis
era... I have more fun playing those games on emulators than
I do playing PS2...

Actually, Game Boy Advance is a portable Super NES, kind
of... and I enjoy it more than PS2. I'm an old school, 2D
gamer at heart!
