2 Questions,

1. Which film has best overall use of sound- a combination
of good speaking on the part of the actors, excellent
editing and a soundtrack that complements the film?

2. Which one aspect of this film is the best aurally?

My answers...

1. Pi.

2. The scene where he's freaking out on the subway and that
high pitched noise comes in when he prods the brain.

I can think of loads but yep, I agree on Pi. Especially
through a nice surround system on DVD..... yum.

Pi does rule but for me it has to be........

1. Leon

2. Just seems to fit so well. It's sublime to me.

Yeah Pi has very good sound !!!

Allso Starwars ::Just read the topic "OMG that sound in
Episode II"
A good example of the amazing sounds in the starwars
movies.

Heat:: The big shoot out on the streets is amazing
soundwise.

The Alien movies::lots of cool sounds
Listen to the guns , very original sound that really
describes the "high speed" of the firing.

It's bent. I have it on DVD and I have a surround system,
but none of the DVD player software I have seems to work
with it. I did used to have some DVD software where it
worked, but after the "upgrade" (which it won't let me roll
back from) I have an inferior player w/o dolby 5.1 support.

Yeah the big heat shootout is probably my favourite scene of
any film.

It's the sheer length of it and the raw feel to it. It
doesn't feel like some Hollywood shootout to me.

oooh allso the scene with the cave troll in Lord Of The
Rings has very clever use of sound.

The music stops during the action and that makes it more
intense and scary .
And the music starts again when Frodo gets hit , and the
effect is very dramatic.

Clever man that Peter Jackson.

A similar "non music" effect is used in Bravehart and Saving
Private Ryan during the blody battle scenes for a more
intense and realistic effect.
Maybe Jackson was inspired by that?

I love his film Braindead. The cheesy music sets the tone of
the film so well. It's great

Pi: I agree with what Ceri said.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Towards the end when Chow's
character and the princess are fighting in the trees. The
sounds their swords make when everything goes into slow
motion is nice, I think.

Yes that scene is very cool !!!
It would be nice to be able to fool the laws of gravity like
they do from time to time in the movie.

The Life Of Brian - the song at the end: "Always Look On The
Bright Side Of Life"

To me, that scene says more about the human condition than
other film I've seen. Don't ask me exactly what it says,
but I just think it's incredibly poignant and I always feel
like crying when I watch it. And it's funny, rather than
being a load of pretentious bullshit like a lot of other
films I could mention.

Saving Ryans Privates....the beach landing is sound-tastic.
Bullets zipping, hanks going deaf , tank noises......class
stuff really...I agree with "pi" too

also....who can forget Raging Bull...the camera flashes have
gorgeous sounds

Ceri, when I read your questions I was thinking of the exact
scene from 'Pi' that you mentioned before I scrolled down to
see that you had written it.

The sound of the lightsabers in the Star Wars movies.

Two whole generations have run around cutting their friends
to pieces whilst imitating the classic "Pswooshhh
Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"

I think it qualifies as one of the best sound effects ever
in cinema.
