music making delema kinda

having all the equipment i could want i now have to ask
myself how i want to go about making my music. what machine
do i want to control what and act as what part of the whole.
what software do i want to be my main software.
i dont know if im asking for advice or just sharing in my
delema.
i want to keep my music highly live but also very intricate
in the drums area which means alot of it would be
preprogrammed as well.

i have cubase, logic, orion pro, fruityloops, cakewalk sonar
to choose from for my MAIN software.

a nord lead 2, ms2000r and er-1 to be controlled.

ive considered having the er-1 trigger drum tones in recycle
while another program sequences my synths.

im rambling.

just a quick comment:

having all kind of equipment makes you search for all kind
of errors.

instead of...

having limited equipments makes you see positive things in
what you produce.

mm.... the vice of excess eh?

i'd use cubase or logic as yer main thing?

if you're going to use a bit of midi, then i think overall
(tho not significantly) cubase is better at the midi, where
as logic excells (ever so slightly) in audio.

i'd suggest cubase sx - but that aint out yet!

re: drums, i often find it hard doing intricate drums
straight off .. so might be an idea to just start off with a
basic groove with yer er-1 via cubase?? and then once you've
done yer nord and ms2000 stuff (or the general idea) you can
go back and work on the drums .. i don't know .. this is how
i find meself working most of the time .. i quite rate the
midi grid for percussion ..

i'll just ramble on anyhow .. tho i'm sure you have your
preferred way of doing things.

but if you have the drums say? and all the synth stuff
recorded as midi in cubase you can then play back each track
and modulate the sound (without having to worry bout
changing the patterns) - and so you can get a "live"
sounding feel or something .. ? dunno .. that's how i'd do
it ??

i couldnt get logic to do anything at all for the short
while i messed with it. cubase i think i should try again
although the crack copy i have sorta gives me the idea its
not too stable.

i think i agree with the limited equipment comment up there.
but im obsessed with having total control and finding the
best way i can do what i want.
really i could just sync the laptop and the er-1 and maybe
pick up a couple guitar effects for live tweaking fun.
record all the keyboard parts so i could leave them all at
home. but i love them too and i like turning their knobs.

Yeah, if you've just got one drum machine program, you're
forced to learn to use that as best you can. With several,
it's tempting to flit about between them.

I'd try doing a track say just using fruityloops to
begin with then try doing stuff in the other software
gradually, for example maybe using cooledit or another
similair porgram for "post production" work.

oh .. the er is the red one aye?

had a play with the red one a while back - good fun that
piece a kit.

if you have all that hardware.. might be worth investing in
a legit or a more stable version of cubase - here in nz i
got a "student" discount on my cubase vst. ending up costing
a third it usually would have!!

yes i usually have all the drums worked out in one long wav
file actually. i use cool edit to take a simple beat and
make it a whole song usually trying to make each messure
very slightly different. but then i hate the fact that live
i would just push play and watch the song happen while i eq
and such. im such a complainer...
my problem is i come from a live band past and improv is one
of my favorite things. but intricate electronic music
doesnt leave much room for improv on the level that live
bands can.

thats exactly what i do, fruityloops for a beat and cool
edit for post production.

mmhh.. if you did the drums via midi - you get a lot more
"live" control over the sound .. depending how many fx you
put on the sound.

either that or use a sampler. I reckon that's the way to go.
it will mean the you will have to change the measures in
midi which might be a pain and new thing to learn - but i
think does make for a more versatile set up? ie. midi
triggers er-1, via guitar fx or vst (depending how much your
cpu/soundcard can tolerate)?

well really so far i just make a beat in fruityloops, tweak
it in cool edit, then record any keyboard or drum machine
parts i want into the computer and sequence all the wav
loops in acid. but like i said that isnt very live.

that's cool ..

you could also have a multiple audio i/o card - tho i don't
know much about this, as i'm a sucker for software/vst based
stuff - you could split different audio outs, and have
different external efx on each of your audio outs .. ??? -
provided you've got enough external efx (does the ms2000 and
nord allow to put audio thru it - ??) should have plenty of
knobs to "twiddle" .. ?

the way I see it, personally ofcourse, is its good to start
out on good programs to make music and work your way up to
higher quality songs... always improve, try new things.....
go out on a limb sometimes... Ill get equipment [hardware]
later... months or even a year or two down the road, I
wouldnt want to start out on it right away, unless you
already know about it, or have started on it all along.

this sorta sounds like a possibility. it would have to be a
usb audio device.

oh i have been building my equipment for a long time and
fully understand how all of them work. i understand my
programs and my keyboards. just looking for the best way to
do what i want more live and not so dj mixer like.

mmhh.. u use a laptop eh?

i think that might be the way to go .. depending how much
variability you want. essentially all you need is to split
it - ie. basic track + track you control and fx externally
.. otherwise it might be a little too hard to controll all
of it .. ie. jumping from one track to the next, twiddling
here n there ???

patronising .. i just love talking about shit like this ..
:)

good luck with yer set up ..

i´ve got tons of good and strange software.
but i mainly use mt2, probeVAS, cooleditpro, granulab and a
couple of others. i use to get my software collection burned
to a cd once in a while and then delete them from my pc and
collect new ones. thats lots of fun.

you can sequence all your hardware from fruity loops + use
vst synths + write all your drum parts. why dont you use
that seeing as you allready have an understanding of it.

i use fruity to play live. it plays the drums, sequences my
3 synths, plus i can tweak various vsti's live using my
midicontroller.

the possibilitys are endless!!!!!!

well, im also a little hung up on being professional. and
ive never completed a song souly using fruityloops that was
that good. i always use other programs as well.

I used to be maaad prolific when all I knew how to use was
10 or 20 programs. Now that I use about ten times that
ammount, it takes me forever to finish anything. But the
output is definately of a higher quality.

don't think, just play at random for a start, and let that
evolve into something more structured and serious if it
needs to. start with any piece of equipment that comes to
mind, it's not so important.

using shit music software

Complete a song in fruity, and just put a lot of effects in
"main", switch them on and play around. perhaps you should
consider singing, so it looks like you do something with
your music live.

actually vocals is something im interested in getting into
recorded if not live. im also considering hooking up with
someone else who could basically do what i tell them to :)
keyboards maybe even guitar and vocals.

"now i am an expert in
using shit music software" i hear that, ive been using
fruityloops since the first version as well as moonfish and
such as that. i only recently got pro stuff
