Besides a lot of "IDM" [stupid term IMO], and other various
sorts of electronix, such as ambient, dnd, big beats... and
all, what sort of metal if any do you listen to? Name a few
bands? Rock too?

I like Deftones, Pantera, Nirvana, Shizit [hardcore metal
gabber techno style], ATR, Dope, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny
Puppy, OhGr, Download, Tool, Beck, Fear Factory, Hatebreed,
White Zombie..... all da shit.

I was prepared to say 'none' but you mentioned NIN, Puppy,
ohGr, Download, Tool, Zombie, etc. and I dig those. I guess
Ministry could be considered metal, I dig them.

Black Sabbath was my favorite band back in grade 10, and
Metallica was my favorite back in grade 9. Those were my
metal head years, I guess. I'm not into it anymore. I was
into grunge, Nirvana and Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and all
them, but I don't consider that metal.

KMFDM should've stuck to their metalish sound. Nowadays
their music is more clubby dancy, hardly any guitars on it.
I think their peak album was Nihil with was dripping wet
with metal riffs.

steve: my favourite KMFDM one would be "symbols" the
selftitled one I mean.... with no real name, just had
symbols on it. Nihil was pretty sweet though, Angst was
wicked too.

actually KMFDM started out EBM i.e dubby and dancy and were
fantastic at it..they pretty much blew at the metal
shtick..I stopped listening to em..if they are back to more
electronic style..I might have to check em out again....

and REFLEX please dont call Skinny Puppy and downLOAD
metal..it's just a personal peeve of mine...

I got into early fantastic grunge..Soundgarden, TAD (Salt
Lick/God's Ball is a Must have for anyone into Guitarbased
music..nothing is harder and groovier than this stuff),
Nirvana..but got right into the Touch and Go/ Amrep noise
core stuff and bypassed most of the metal..stuff like
Rapeman and Unsane and Steelpole Bathtub make metal
sound..dunno Goofy in comparison

true but they do the most razor edged "rock" ever..or atleat
they did..one of the band members was a brother of a band
member of Helmet..another band I dug back then..

well, i think a lot of the artists on my list i wouldn't
call metal but i can understand why others might. but beck
and sonic youth i can fathom how ANYONE could call them
metal. and yes i do have 'confusion is sex/kill yr. idols'
and other early SY recordings. i think there's a significant
difference between what they did then and metal, and i
certainly don't think anything after their sister album can
be even remotely perceived as metal. it's just completely
different goals (metal and early sonic youth).

i'd also like to add to my list some of the local hardcore
bands in the dc area: pg99, majority rule, and my friend's
band crestfallen (they're really popular in the area).

for some reason i couldn't really get into most helmet songs
i heard aside from "milk toast" off the crow soundtrack
(great metal soundtrack!). however i'm rather excited about
the electronic-infused page hamilton solo album with
production by charlie clouser of nin! =D page is also
involved w/ tapeworm, if THAT ever comes out.

and yea of course, i'm a huge sonic youth fan... that's why
i rambled on about how they weren't ever a metal band
exactly (important distinction to make).

www.pheer.com
DC/MD hardcore page. go to "sound" and download the songs by
darkest hour (especially "soul of a survivor"!) and pg99.
great stuff!

reflex: i only read the first few messages and people's
lists; "what rock bands do you like" is a huge question to
ask, IMO. may as well ask what electronic artists they like
as well, if people are going to be honest about their rock
interests.

speaking of Gary Numan, has anyone else here heard his

similar to nin.

i've been meaning to hear it; numan gushes about trent
reznor in every interview he has. i hear 'pure' is basically
an homage to nin and that it's a pretty good homage.
