.....girls and shity music?!?!?

another recent topic got me thinking, and:
i dont know ANY girls my age who are into ANYTHING other
than pop

...im not trying to be sexist... but its just so
frustrating!
they're all so narrow minded (not just about music, but
other stuff too..)

now, most guys my age are this way too (although a slighty
higher portion seem to be more independant minded)
...but im not attracted to guys!

anyways... do u find this too?
why do u think this is?

yeah i know...it's weird. Most of the girls i know like boy
bands or creed or typical top40 fluff. Not quite everyone
is like that (I managed to get a co-worker to like aphex),
but I'm not sure what it is. Most of them tell me it's
because they must have "singing" in their songs. Or usually
it's because there are cute guys in the band.

I also find this to be true. Girls don't care about how
music is done or what goes behind it (sorry but Im speaking
for the majority). It's how girls are. Men are more
interested in how things work. Thus if a girl hears
something poppy she can dance to, BANG, she dances and
enjoys it. Some guys will follow this as well and will not
care about the music. Its a tough situation. I think
theres a minority out there (us for instance) that truely
cares about music and would rather get something out of it
intellectually than just something to mindlessly dance to.
Some people don't care and would rather dance.

Yes I agree with XLR. Cute guys in bands usually suck in
the girls (pardon the pun if there was one) by the billions.
Sad but true.

it would be interesting to actually do a study of a valid
sample of the population to actually test this out you
know... but I think I do agree, it seems that a higher
majority of girls are into pop crap...

it's probably some scientific reason, like females are more
emotional people, so maybe sappy songs like Hero by Enrique
Iglesias appeal to them more... or something...

but I could also be REALLY sexist and say that it's because
girls aren't as intelligent as guys, and thus can't
comprehend the intelligent music of Aphex Twin, and the
like...

... but I won't... :)

Hey now Funk, if you were nudging me there quite it! I
didn't say girls were not intelligent but said that they
don't care...meaning that they'll just dance and enjoy
something. Girls I hear in reports are smarter than boys.
So...

What I would like to know is their fascination with the word
"Angel" in their chat names:

SweetAngel
DeatAngel
AngelGirl
Sweetangel4U
BluestarAngel

It goes on and on and on and on....

seriously though, I think women are great... the whole
attraction and love thing is a pain in the ass sometimes,
but women still rock!!!

ya!
they all have (well, MANY of them) the same internet names
too!
TONNES of "-angel"s in their names.. plus these others:

cat/kitten
cute/cutey
sweet
sexy
sunshine
eyes
...etc

u end up with something like:
"sweet-sunshine-sex-kitten's-angel eyes"

...then, their name makes them possesed by some guy, (ie:
"daves'gal")
...or, possesed by some celebrity!
(ie: aphex'skitten)

oh god... the names make them out to be such MORONS!

yeah, another thing I find with girls is that they love the
stupid forwarded message things... you know the ones, "Send
this one to 5 people, and you will fall in love" or some
crap... and you ever look at all the e-mails? It's all
girls!!!! :)

Aminal: lol

Funkmaster: that's true. Once my ex-girlfriend sent me an
email about how this family who's son is dying in the
hospital is being sponsered by AOL/Time Warner and for each
person that receives 'tracked' mail the family received 30
cents towards the kids operation. I wrote her back saying
this is a load of crap because a) AOL/Time Warner would
never do anything too altruistic, b) why the hell would
they...--well I don't need to explain it to you, you

Bill Gates is Satan... if you take each letter of his name,
convert it to the ascii number value or whatever, and add
them up, you get 666... coincidence? I think not!!!

I'm sick of girls being so shallow; I'm not going to cut
them any more slack for listening to shitty music than I am
for guys who listen to shitty music.
that said, I have very few friends who listen to, put
simply, the kind of stuff that I listen to (Aphex, Autechre,
Plaid, Pole, Mira Calix, etc.), male or female.
the only other person I know who actively listens to
Autechre as much as I do (actually he listens to it
more) is my brother.
the only other close friend I have who actively listens to
Plaid is female.
many of my friends like the music I listen to, but, as seems
to be agreed in this thread, I just don't think that
intellectual music and artistic values apply to the general
populace as much as pretty faces or people they feel they
can relate to on a more direct level.

as for music and girls... well, i know quite a few "intense
and serious" listeners, not into aphex, but jazz. they are
quite astute and are very articulate when it comes to
discussing music... then again, they are not young girls,
they are about 40 years old. my wife will listen to most of
my music (Aphex, Autechre, Pat Metheny, Mike Oldfield, Paul
Simon, Primus, other jazz, Living Colour, the list goes on)
and not complain, but she doesn't listen intensely like I
do.

for an interesting disussion about gender and music, check
this out.

it's from the pat metheny group discussion board, kinda like
this message board.

true, girls are more likely to be into top 40/pop stuff than
guys. but i know girls who are reeeeeeeeally into music, the
only difference is it tends to be more lyrical than
instrumental. that doesn't mean it's mainstream; we're
talking indie rock here, from well known to extremely
eclectic and obscure. quite passionate about it. just not
much electronic generally, usually just more mainstream and
poppish electronica (chems, prodge, FBS, beta band if you
count them, sometimes aphex).
