i'm sure it's happened, i can almost feel a pile of them. but as it did happen, i never sat down and said, "this remix actually made me discover the original" and so i can tell you that you're onto a perfectly good xltronic topic; that this has definitely happened to me. yet i cannot pull any out immediately. perhaps some else will have better luck |

Not necessarily remixes in the strictest sense... But so much of the early 90s hard hitting west coast hip hop that I love is totally stealing large swaths of pure funk samples from dudes like George Clinton. Clinton was a treasure trove for me, I fuckin love it. Found him mostly thru Ice Cube but Clinton is *everywhere* in 90s hip hop. Then you realize Ice Cube's "Check yo self" just lifted the beat from Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" without changing a note. It's all a bit mixed up, but they don't really call anything a remix. As a kid (12, 13 or so) I remember looking all over for the version of NiNs "Closer" that was featured as the opener of the movie Seven. Few years later I found it, it's and it turned me onto their entire discography. Now, combine some Coil and some 90s Clinton infused hip hop, and you got a stew goin. |

I remember going into tower records. 1996 or 97. Found the neckbeard. "Hey man so you know if I can find the nine inch nails album that has the version of closer that's in the movie seven??" "Uhhmm here" *hands me downward spiral* Motherfucker, I already have that, that's not it. "Then I'm not sure, it was probably made just for the movie. Here I think you'll like this." I end up buying zoot suit riot and to this day its the gayest album ever. That guy sucked. What a shit album. |
