Deal with its quirks and lean into it.

the way to use the 303 is like uli behringer: steal the
design, all the mods, then offer it for a price idiots like
me can actually swing

i was thinking, later: i wonder if it made anyone shit their
pants? like: crap, all the punters can have a 303 now. and
some of them will be fucking good, and they were no threat
when you didn't see "with devilfish and midi" <$4k etc

using the 303 as an acoustic bass replacement is like
pretending your lego ray gun is just a drill tool, when your
parents are looking.

nice clickbaity title i loled
are there interviews with the people who made the 303(TB),
where they are asked about acid?
they may be dead by now but they must have been around long
enough to hear the acid wave, would love to hear what they
thought (apart from being amazed, presumably)

i imagine it as being like another boring office day but you
make the parameter ranges a bit too big because why not,
then oh woops made an entire fucking dance
craze/genre/subculture

inb4 "yeah but 101/202, any other subtractive synth" - thats
another interesting thing, would "acid" have happened
without the 303

you have to use the 303 like it's the most dangerous jenga
block in the whole stack. keep raisins far away

i listen to others talking very carefully, but in the end,
my ears are the verdict. the whole range comes back, from
"huh, that really does matter" to "wow complete toss"

i had a real 101 for years, i used a real 202 for a few
months a couple years before that; deep enough i was
claiming to be one of the top sh-101 players in
massachusetts. because i figured it would a solid bet you'd
have trouble finding 100 people that even identify with,
like "the sh-101 is an Instrument like a violin is an
Instrument"

and the 101 is a violin and the 202 is a viola and bailing
on that metaphor

now that i have behringer ms-1 + their yellow maxed out 303,
it's kind of like: ok, yes, this is also a capital-I
instrument. if you want to scream specs, the filters have
totally different character on 101 vs 303, but that misses,
like, that the whole is more than the sum of its parts and
the wonk 303 filter is an important part, but just a part

so you can squeeze passable 303 out of the ms-1 all day
long, but that doesn't mean you're getting the experience,
the state of mind, the other facilities all in one place
laid out as they be

so yes. i listen to others talking very carefully, but in
the end, my ears are the verdict. the whole range comes
back, from "huh, that really does matter" to "wow complete
toss" and there's what i feel on the whole argument. having
waited, like, almost 20 years to have enough time on them
all because moby buys all the drum machines and uses them to
prop up the sofa.

i have never ever thought "what this track needs is a real
303", but have definitely thought "what this track needs is
something that does basically the same as 303".... the only
thing that has pissed me off about BOTH is that the cutoff
doesn't go up far enough... hence.... it's about tickling
bits of the spectrum in particular ways 4 me

i've been listening to real 303, real clone 303, fake 303,
fake software 303, real cloned software, etc. and "the
medium is the message," what does that mean again? should
look it up. that the tools we use, and the interfaces we
accept, interface our results and our ideas

now i have this uli 9000 thing which is the first time
anyone has even let me get close to breathe on a 303, and i
was fast over that part, honestly, like, "why, yes, i kind
of knew this already, but now i am EXTRA sure: it
forces you to work this way, and that was enough of a
nudge to build"

...a whole vernacular that has actually become generalized
and displaced from the original, somewhat.

so, the full circle is thus: rapidly was into AUGH i'm sick
of programming this thing. it was quaint like knitting for a
few tracks, but now i've had it -- i just want a general
repeating shape, ok? i'm not trying to put in a melody with
note lengths?

so i skip right past that bloody sequencer
use all the patch points it has
to do the expanded 303 vocabulary that comes from
fruityloops and plugins

fetishizing sequencers is the ultimate nonsense....
best sequencer you can have is your brain and it costs
fuck all, just a "bit" of practice.....

shorter version, i guess: when i finally got one i
diligently put some time in on the actual 303 sequencer, and
it was exactly what i expected, you can see how it shaped
the acid sound. then i'm sick of this bloody crap sequencer
and on to using the patch points to do what i'm used to in
software. i don't really use software at the moment, but i
did for years, and that shaped my sound. interfaces shape us
as much as we use them to shape the sound

still in massachusetts

like, oh, even the filter on the 303 shaped the sequencing;
it's not just the sequencer itself. unlike the sh101 there
are some chunky gaps in the sweet spots you need to learn to
dodge, which kind of forces you to stop and think a bit
about where you're going when you make a larger jump.
