universal indicator. that's like, back from when acid house
was limited to a Magnavox Odyssey² correct?

other highlights from myspace include: 1) asking mike dred
if any of the 303 clones were any good (current scoop: just
buy the behringer with all the mods) and he wrote back a
teardown of a few 2) dave monolith writing me a DM asking
what components he should buy and how because he was
interested in SDIY

anyways, the vaguely indian name... alright, we're creating
some expansive multi-alias afx parody effort, right? we have
to cover the bases. we have regretamin hole off classics,
and are you sure this is the UI parody? and not the four
ragas and a disco turban guy?

people have bought this, a bunch? i thot
and oh: name your price zero

which is an odd twist because doesn't bandcramp charge to
let you do that?

and before, i was thinking: "i wonder how much this scheme
nets. it has to be at least three figures"

oh, oh, i get it. exactly like i thought: "i see lots of
user icons on this album page it looks like lots of people
have bought it" and in a way paying bandcamp to let you give
away albums for free is a sort of promotional strategy.
particularly if you want to lend something like this cheap
legitimacy credit

if you want to step it up and put out some fake afx that
might fool hyperflake. i can provide consultancy rates

"would this fool hyperflake"

it's a solid metric. because it wouldn't fool sean booth

hyperflake, how hard do you think it would be for me to fool
you with fake afx? i think you're in a unique position to
judge here

Again, I have absolutely 0 to gain from all of this.
My name is Marcel de Velde, living in the Netherlands.
Just a random music lover who happened to stumble upon this.
And being a nice guy I thought I'd share it.
That's all there is to it.
You can agree with my assessment that it's RDJ or you can
not. All fine with me. Hope you enjoy the music in any case
:)

i just saw this in the news

"I was handed Aric’s wedding ring in a plastic bag at
the hospital, five hours after Sam placed it on his finger
and they read each other their vows," the groom's mother
wrote on the page. "Aric has lost the love of his life."

A GoFundMe page identifies the bride as Samantha “Sam"
Hutchinson, 34, and her new husband as Aric Hutchinson.

"The golf cart was thrown over 100 yards and rolled several
times," the page says.

...and i'm nodding, like -- you see? that'll bring a
much better return

1) rephlex signed monolith off myspace, in some part, i
feel, because i don't even think he was trying to be aphex,
it just got to a point where he was sobbing in a corner
saying "i'm not aphex, i'm not aphex, they can't tell me who
i am" because so many people came at him on myspace thinking
he was. myself included. but then i'm talking with him a
bit, and stuff about SDIY, and he says he's found two
labels, one of which i'll have heard of -- rephlex, obvs.
and maybe he used a goat picture or something but this was
as lots of people were trying very hard to be fake aphex on
myspace so rephlex and warp would say hullo.

maybe that still works on myspace. haven't tried the site
recently

B) when i made my exai parody, my sole aim was to troll
people pirating the album. that the first few minutes had to
sound quasi-serious. that i wanted, like "oh, slow start.
ok. ok. ok, what. what. WHAT. WHA- oh you asshole" and i'm
not sure it ever worked but that was still a fun afternoon

Q) what is left in 2022? maybe it's a fart stored in
tupperware from a decade ago. maybe it's a sekret collective
watmm project. or someone like mermaidman with a
drug-induced superiority complex getting off on fooling
anyone

not joking, though -- you'd make a lot more cash just
running a basic GoFundMe scam. given that this feels a scam,
and the money makes no sense, it's got to be ego. then
ijonspeeches is commenting that how some of these pun names
actually seem sort of mean, and so it's an indirect sort of
ego: it's personal

if you keep bothering me on the matter i might go and
actually figure it out. be careful

Sure, go figure it out.
There's a whole web of Soundcloud accounts by Rephlex artist
aliases.
Also check out the IDM compilation on Midievil Records.
If you figure out who's who please let us know.

Btw, the wannabes are on Soundcloud and Bandcamp these days.
Colour records or something like that. Many names. Sometimes
there's a good track made, most often not. Never a
convincing Aphex impersonation though plenty plenty of
tries.

unless it's been changed recently, you don't have to pay to
let people download your bandcamps for free, but it is
limited. maybe 250 free downloads a month for a new account,
maybe more if you sell more. people who haven't paid for the
album can't add it to their "library" and their little icon
doesn't appear on the release page.
i don't remember if the same applies for promotional codes.
i think so? you do get some free codes as well and get more
as you sell more.
anyway all this to your scheme idea wouldn't quite work, but
maybe you can make fake accounts of buying customers.

This certainly isn't a sample library. And not Pianoteq.

perhaps possible.
But copying almost every one of his past styles and
innovating on them?
Not possible. It's really him. Just listen to this:

Btw, I never thought Steinvord was Aphex.

are you replying to me? because i thought it sounded like
squarepusher, if you go back, oh, to the previous page of
this here forum-thred.

you never thot¹ steinvord was aphex? that doesn't sound
like you, mang, are you ok? i mean -- you think monolith is
aphex. you think chris moss acid is aphex

Monolith = The Tuss = Richard D james.

The Tuss and Monolith are made on thesame new Roland gear,
V-synth

and you're really making me bang my hed on the wall with
some of this, i have to say

v-synth showed up as this Very Expensive thing when roland
was making dreadful things like the SH-201.

the SH-101 was more in my budget, and, well, banging on it
in guitar center, i found it to be a lot of fuss for a
rather bland synth.

i looked at the VASTly unaffordable V-Synth and saw more
D-Beam crap and said to myself: "oh they've just expanded
this nonsense into a workstaton and added a zero to the
price" and ppf crap about "time warp"

but since it was so overpriced i never actually got ahold of
one and maybe it's actually good, and, ugh. everything about
me says "lol no that's crap" but i really cannot be. sure

i'll hold on to my first impression and say: lol no that's
crap

Sounds like someone who's good with Renoise but doesn't
have the mixing / composition style / creativity /
sensibilities of Aphex.

and, uggghh. that, alright, this could be a renoise tracker
jam, and the mix in tracker stuff can be... fragile, and...

no, i'll go with my first take, again: this is how it sounds
when you mix/record a jam with the monitors WAY TOO LOUD on
a lot of chemicals. next morning, with only hazy memories of
recording it, you're all "fffu i had the monitors too loud
again"

if you crank steinvord loud the mix sounds fine.

¹yoink

Well denial has come in the form of an album name and cover
lol.
https://midievil-records.bandcamp.com/album/nah-mate

I don't know what to think anymore..
MintSauceMilitia is surely Richard, Loneist =
MintSauceMilitia and therefore also Richard (also several
tracks give it away, though others I wouldn't have guessed)
Midievil Records is linked somehow.. And Beathaven + Sean
Revell (on his Soundcloud) + Ragi Arinbjornsson (secret
Rephlex album = Universal Indicator) do sound like Richard
jamming / experimenting with a simple setup in several
ways.
But there are others involved too for sure, Rephlex / Warp
artists on the Midievil Records IDM compilation, a web of
Soundcloud account aliases, etc etc. Oh and in the comments
made by Beathaven / Sean Revell on Soundcloud they sound a
lot like Richard's comments through known accounts. And
there's the Devon link (just like The Tuss, now known to be
Richard).

So make of all that what you want. I can't say anything 100%
sure.
Perhaps I'm mistaken about Beathaven, perhaps not.
Great tracks nonetheless!

Ok, maybe I messed up..
Perhaps I shouldn't have mixed up Beathaven with
MintSauceMilitia and Loneist..
MintSauceMilitia and Loneist are Richard for sure.
Perhaps Beathaven and other aliases on Midievil Records are
not.
Maybe I should make a new thread.

How do you know that? Are you aphex?

we are all a composite. you are born and there are just
sounds that make no sense at first but then there are your
parents voices and words start to come into focus. then
comes grandma's voice, then sesame street, the president's
voice (it's all my choice)

your parents are a product of their parents voices and their
parents from their parents and so on, and, like, oh, this
finally feels like something that could... power all this,
you know?

that we're all the product of many other people who are the
product of many other people etc etc. and i guess what free
will boils down is which voices you choose to listen to

one of my aunts, in a more candid moment, said: "...your dad
dated so many funny, smart, gorgeous women... and then he
married your mom" and then we were both very confused,
because, like, really? while she's all "aww fuck." and i
wasn't upset at all, because it just... sense... and why...
her, anyways?

but i thought a moment, and out of the back of my hed fell
some random moment, easily fifteen years before this
conversation, where my dad said: "your mum, she's amazing.
she can instantly recall conversations she had 20 years ago
like it was a few minutes ago" and now the world has another
one.

i'm worse than trying to fake aphex. i'm out to take him
apart to understand what's working so well. along with quite
a few other musicians

after drukqs, early 00s, i just compulsively scoured the web
for interviews.

he talked in(t[win]t)erviews about how not all brands of
cassette sounded as good for tape saturation. and
overdriving channels. and the drukqs interview, i stole the
word "fings" from this and, actually, did he come up with
"thot" or was that me riffing off "fings" ?

so i'm not him. i'm just a tape recorder playing back what
he said

while i'm here -- because i'm not sure i'll ever have
license to bring it up again

what bothers me beyond compare is when i want to cite a
twinterview i read, and i can't find it. that there's one in
particular that really feels like it went down the memory
hole proper -- the interviewer describes him taking
voluminous bong rips in the afx tour bus as the interview
was conducte, whilst simultaneously destroying said
interviewer in 80s memory toy game "simon"

it's gone. it's so gone. easily ten, fifteen years. maybe he
sued over it. wouldn't surprise me, given how weed was back
then. but i felt like that was a moment of genuine
character, and actually not unflattering at all. and very
illustrative

you know i haven't really listened to the... charles singh,
was it? the turban acid album. i'm not a huge fan of "oh
this is not bad for 40 years ago" stuff unless it's, like,
psyche rock by pierre henry -- when fatboy slim remixed
that, well, it was his weakest remix ever, simply because
everything was already done and he had nowhere to hide. so
it sounds very similar to the original

...and, yeah. this is more just out of precedent; ears
haven't voted -- but this would be exactly the sort of thing
that was complete horseshit. a giggling, "let's
rewrite the history of techno; they're too dumb to figure it
out" and perhaps that's true

when fatboy slim remixed that, well, it was his weakest
remix ever, simply because everything was already done and

and i just went back and played both for the first time in
two years or such, because i wanted to see... holy shit,
yes. this is the only time i can definitely say "fatboy
slim's remix made this worse." it's just like a half-length
reader's digest version of the original.

that i saw a vid of fatboy slim talking about rockafella
skank, and he's like "...but something was missing. and then
one day i went to the beach, and i saw a bunch of people
surfing, and i thot: oh yeah! surf guitar! that's it"

so one does not really see him a tense remixer; generally
all smiles and going off to the beach when he's stuck rather
than flipping out.

but i can totally see him having a meltdown over the psyche
rock remix: "i have shit. shit"

and if i had 20 minutes with the man, well, my questions
about what he's doing with panning would still win out, but
this just shot right up the list

but i can totally see him having a meltdown over the
psyche rock remix: "i have shit. shit"

that i'm just simulating this from earnest, careful study of
the man from a distance.... anyways, about this point, when
he's freaking out, finally, when he never flips out,
what the heck what am i doing? and it hits him that he's
gone up against psyche rock, and he's lost -- badly. at that
point, the worst is over, and he simply wants to get rid of
the remix as fast as possible and move on to other
situations where he can actually be effective.

the first portishead album. portishead in general. utterly
missed it until re-watching the wire during the pandemic,
and "glory box" caught my ear. something like, "we wanted to
make a record that would just have a reliable place in

that i would cite this album above... most any other,

itself about the room and vibrates your toes or whatever.
only better one i can think of is saw II. and it took me
