i really don't understand why people want discord to kill
this board, but it does feel like they're doing a right
proper job. but, why? why would you want to replace
something storied and stained with joint burns with some
stupid electron framework toy universe?

that in particular, some people... like, tony fleetmouse,
where the fuck is your head at? you do realize once discord
kills all the unique and charismatic forums, they'll be
like, "alright, pay up suckaz" and then there will be
"anonymized" ads based on "statistical keyword analysis"

they have capitalized on things, like, freenode being idiots
and blowing up everyone's account data, the phonie-zation of
everyfing, and now they're probably right that if they can
kill forums and capture them in their walled garden they can
be the next fucking facebook. and good luck with that. i
suppose i'm not against checking in sometimes if this place
disappears, but i can't see myself any further than popping
in for a few minutes just to stay in touch. grudgingly. i
haven't logged into facebook in years and that's had a real
price, honestly

It initially formed as a support group for men with very
small penises, but evolved to talking about IDM, when I
found out about its initially use, I left as I have a

there are two buttons.

One is labeled, 'Quit all social media forever.'

The other is labeled, 'type any random shit that comes into

Your finger hovers uncertainly above that the two

the discord was pretty quiet up until last week

discord catchup:
*hyperflake left the discord
*mr mathers joined the discord
*fleetmouse and dariusgriffin had an argument over politics
*lots of new names were posted in the new names channel
*belb posted a new album
*some lurkers joined

xltronic has had more activity over the last week too

oh, alright. suddenly your seemingly incongruent -- and,
sorry, but fuck technology is dumbed down these days,
fucking firefox things incongruent isn't a word! fucking
idiot fox 3rd grade reading level etc etc

anyways -- suddenly, your seemingly incongruent big-up of
discord makes sense. your political views, why are you...
oh, okay, you run it. how quickly a bit of power warps our
ideals

that being said, it's not about that, i think you're
actually good to run such a thing. it's more about... do you
not see what they've been doing, here? and how close they're
getting to, oh, monetization? because they'll want to look
good for a fucking IPO eventually?

you are massively mixing concerns and so i've tagged them

1. new users cant register here so.
2. discord is also mainly a chat room so its more
synchronous
3. its nice that xltronic is still around
4. but not everything needs to be preserved forever.

1) but this board also has thousands of dormant members
going back two decades, and we reliably get "oh hey, haven't
seen you in ages, how have you been?" like a freaking advent
calendar a couple times a year. you bin this for discord,
you lose that -- and if xlt goes down; they'll never even
find the discord. presuming, unlike me, they don't feel icky
using it

2) i am actually in support of a live chat in parallel to
xltronic... but, having it not be synchronous allows
people of multiple time zones to have a deeper discussion
than typically happens on -- IRC, it should still be IRC,
ok? tony can run the server

3) it is. that a lot of what i presumed solid has blown up
in the last few months, and it kind of freaks me out this
could be a part of it too

4) i started scraping zilty because the A) the search
function broke [no worries phobs] and then B) google site
search tapped out and stopped archiving anything more than
two weeks old. i just wanted to be able to find this or that
post from ages ago. but it raises a good point: you can see
zilty from twenty years ago; your entire discord could
vaporize tomorrow. theoretically, i could scrape that too,
but... no, if someone else wants it go right ahead; it'll be
obliterated soon enough. not everything needs to be
preserved forever, but you'll forgive me for speaking up for
this or that particular fing

epic you worry too much about forevers.
nothing is forever. even if the "thermodynamic death of the
universe" thing is a bust, something like that will get us,
and in all likelihood we'll have blown ourselves up long
before then. like, no one talks about, "how do they stop
people from gradually building bombs star trek replicator,
if they are clever and just make individual parts?" that as
the power of individual humans increase you're also giving
it to the bipolar asshole from 13 Monkeys.

i'm just arguing why it'd be a mistake to let discord kill
zilty.

would you care to elaborate on the price paid for not
logging in to fb for years?

i don't think it's too hard to see. i said above --
paraphrasing -- "ohhh, if zilty goes down, i'll stop in to
say hello, to stay in touch." that, by not kowtowing to mark
"kermit" zuckerbird, i've lost touch with people from
college. things like... a guy from my circle from high
school suddenly died like 2020, and i was so stunned i
didn't ask how/why. now it's bothering me but i don't want
to bring it up again with the guy that told me because i
don't want to bum him out. the guy was splitting a house
with my first serious girlfriend and her [darn] husband,
they just found him on bed. that she's also apeshit for
happy hardcore music and i've had loads to send her. i could
probably rattle up contact info through the grapevine, i
should, but live is bees and marbles as of late and i don't
have that sort of social detective bandwidth right now

the internet turned out to be a dystopian nightmare, yes,
but I use what i can to keep me from getting too bored

amused to death, devolution, any number of band music name
things

i guess i can be even more direct: what freaked me out was
seeing discord unveil "we're your forum now, too" -- and i
haven't even tried it. i don't care whether it's any good or
not. i just see what they're doing -- like i said, trap 'em,
milk 'em.

contrast that to here, where phobs is arguably more hostage
to this madness than in charge.

previous post; this will now be my parrot answer when people
tell me to discord

but really, the fucking shit with spellcheck getting
stupider... that that's just it... that it's been like: "i
could swear spellcheck used to know this word" and with
"incongruent" -- which is underlining in red, here -- i
fucking have you; i am 112% certain this was not flagged as
a spelling error before.

so you have the web browser itself, spellcheck, dumbing
people down, oh, incongruent isn't a word? but, wait, none
of us got that far, because, since it's not a word, as the
overlards have defined it, no one knows it exists, since
fucking phone autosuggest will actively steer you away from
words it does not know, the same way firefox's spellcheck is
telling me "incongruent" is wrong. they're wrong. they're
incongruent. and fuck them with, like, combine a magnetar
with an elephant cock, and fuck you with that.

[it is also saying "magnetar" is not a word]

me, just now: dfjgkdfgaaaaaugh halp my brain

context: by forcing all the humans using fooglecones or
iShits to use a far smaller vocabulary, you make all the
automated assistant shit computationally easier. that the
fucker of it is, that it was probably like: "oh, we ran AI
simulations, and then we used millions of people as guinea
pigs for A/B tests, and we determined we statistically got
better results when we dumb'd language down, we're really
not sure why, but we're just running with it"

i forget who said it, but -- "never attribute to malice that
which can adequately be explained by stupidity."

that smart people, by virtue of being smart, can
occasionally be incredibly stupid. a sort myopic...
incongruency

the obvious darker interpretation is that, if china runs
discord, and thus discord's spellcheck, they can steet
everyone onto speaking in a more homogenized way that is far
far easier to data mine. it also helps find more relevant
ads you actually want

yes this could all be true, I saw the video umbro mentions a
while back. the dumbing down of the internet is something
that has been going on for a long while now, regardless of
the chinese. the thing is that there's little we can do to
change the tide, or is it?

forums in general won't be replaced by discord, it's another
sort of thing

my only concern with this place is it breaking down for
whatever reason, not it being replaced with some chinese
scam

pst can I make you even more paranoid... don't read if
you're not ready for this... okay I warned you

discord was made by the ceo of openfeint (mobile api
integration thing that was huge in the early 2010s, the
android equivalent of apple's game center) who sold it off
and all its data to a chinese company for $104m
multiple lawsuits ensued where openfeint was accused of
tracking and monitoring sensitive user data (social media
profiles, private messages, contacts, gps location), there
was no transparency at all

discord is no different. it collects everything you do
inside the app (and sometiems outside) and everything is
logged and sent to their servers (indefinitely I suppose).
there is no end to end encryption and should a data breach
happen (discord is a valuable target it will happen)
everyone's info is sitting on their servers unencrypted,
every message and piece of data. obviously that would be
catastrophic

also discord changed their terms of service in 2018 to
inform its customers that their right to sue or participate
in a class-action lawsuit against them has been revoked.
there is no way to reprensentatively sue them.

how is it possible for a chatting app to be worse than
facebook when it comes to privacy. even the NSA didn't go as
far when they implemented PRISM on skype -_-

the dumbing down of the internet is something that has
been going on for a long while now, regardless of the
chinese. the thing is that there's little we can do to
change the tide, or is it?

my sacrifice with facebook was: i know some people will
drift off, people i actually care about. but that's what's
facebook is monetizing: my love for other people. that, fuck
you, it sucks, but, non-participation. because, if i am not
on the network, the network becomes less valuable, and
people will begin to consider asking... yeah, phone number
krew, we exchange phone numbers? they'll know one of those
and find me that way

you can already see facebook biting its fingernails until
they're bloody as everyone under 50 begins to avoid them.
you can see them hedging their bets trying to rip off neal
stephenson's "metaverse." i cannot describe how much i hate
them for trademarking "meta"

but, yeah, don't use this crap, and that makes them less
sticky to everyone else, and with enough collective oomph it
hits an inflection point, runs out of budget, justin
timberlake buys and and deletes all the data, etc

forums in general won't be replaced by discord, it's
another sort of thing

please tell me how it is not clear as a bell that yes, this
is literally, directly, their business strategy. not ~all~
forums, just -- capture as many of them as you can; turn
them into zombies for-our farm-um

my only concern with this place is it breaking down for
whatever reason, not it being replaced with some chinese
scam

dumbing language down makes it easier to "show more relevant
ads that you actually want to see." saves money. later it'll
come to be seen as ill-advised if anyone has the
intellectual capacity left, but for now i think they're just
chasing the numbers; full ostrich

how does medium.com work? i think they sell articles but
i've never had to pay for one? sorta like bandcramp? but
also, again, what you think? i just kind of feel that as a
place where people kind of soapbox of this sort. i am aware
it is another network of sorts; cool send it back to the
borg with individuality like hugh in star trek... but also,
if i wanted to be totally ignored, it'd probably fit on
kuro5hin if that still exists

i'll wrap in a parallel tangent: i used to quite love
twitter. that, as i tweeted, "twitter is like a kitchen junk
drawer for words." so all sorts of stupid crap i'd no clue
what to do with, but, oh, i like this too much to throw out
"hairilyn hanson" "ruby off the rails on diamonds" etc. and
eventually i wound up chatting with people to a bit.
sometimes i'd just fire off a stray thought. the stray
thought that got me on, i dunno, some patronizing "time-out"
was tweeting at microsoft in complaint for some trash widget
they'd just force-pushed out to everyone, with something
like, "...whoever made this decision should die in a fire."
clearly, like... that's old internets reference, but even if
you don't know that, how could that be interpreted as a
threat? but microsoft reported it as a threat, and, well, i
would have waited the week to come back, but it also
demanded a phone number before it started my ~time-out~ and
i've tried logging back in a few months apart and it still
just wants a phone number

and i missed it rather much at first, then occasionally, and
finally, today -- so if you, like, combined an elephant cock
with a magnetar? yeah, fuck twitter with that

can't even fathom how to organize this; no stomach to try.
just spitballing here ~

what if you could get, say, even 25% of normal occasional
twitter users to "strike" for a week? that, actually, it's
done quietly; that everyone simply abstains from any twitter
at all for a week. at that point, anyone not with the
program will suddenly feel like they're drowning in
corporate propaganda, because... microsoft and that tier
have a small country of people responsible for managing
their, i dunno, twit image... that shit KFC tweets makes the
news; that's the idea... pass the anti-viral

but, yes, if you could get a statistically significant
portion of people to simply abstain from twitter, anyone not
with the program would be like... why is my feed all obvious
plant posts about the Office 365 rebranding?

and i discussing; i had no idea. but one guy, just digs it
right out "they were trying to sew 'Night Out' into the
pants and their English is terrible and they were using
voice to text dictation" and, for real, that solves it for
me. i fucking loved that; i was a fan afterwards. like,
you've gotten it wrong so hard you've turned around and
delivered genuine brilliance. but now they're all on
lockdown and the voice to text is quiet.

I like how incoherent verbal incontinence guy is worried
about language and expression.
