with mark "kermit" zuckerbird leading the charge, data,
data, let us own all your data. the phones have us used to
storing everything we've ever done in "the cloud" -- "so why
not our proper computers too," some greedy beancounters say

apple already owns your data. windows 11 essentially exists
because there's a needed revamp if microsoft is to totally
pwn your shit all the way up and down the hardware stack.
otherwise, heaven forbid, you may not use Microsoft OneCloud
with your Microsoft Account to store your Microsoft
Office... etc

meanwhile: My music PC, only windows computer in the house,
got slow and laggy after windows update ran. Disabling some
of their like "verify with Microsoft Store" crap fixed it,
but until then I worried the SSD was on its last legs. So,
hell, let's back it up

...and I just cannot get windows to send shit to linux.
Trying to just copy/paste it over SMB; windows literally
just ignores me. Then robocopy is having issues talking to
the samba share. Now it is going, finally, slow as molasses,
over SCP, except when dodgy windows paths blow it up

trying to clear out my phone, same exact nonsense: the
terminal app with rsync uninstalled itself. bluetooth is
slow as shit. and it's like

you used to be able to just fucking plug a phone into a
USB port and copy the files why the fuck can i not just do
that still

and the answer is, because i might not store my stuff in
Google Drive then. shitfuckers

i found this charming article ~ LAZY_TITLE

...and it's like

1) ok, i am not nuts, i am not alone, this guy going through
exactly the same shit and even saved me a few steps
2) he actually writes like i do; i should see who this guy

oh, hell, on the ~yolo~ tip -- i use this computer for A)
reaper/recording B) winamp/listening C) light web browsing
in up-to-date firefox with settings clamped down; everything
cleared on exit. adblock plus and noscript i nuts to turn of ASLR? because i just did simply to
try, and things feel so much more silky. i might leave it.
but i should probably go over to the router -- the one i
bought myself -- and lock it out of the rest of the network

my point? oh, right

this: get your data out of your devices while you can, in
general. because eventually it'll be stuck in there and
you'll be paying to access it every time

theres gotta be smart people working ways around this
im still running old systems but eventually i will have to
use a newer one too.

i cleared a notification nagging me about the bullshit i
shut off. i click [x] very carefully, aiming to not actually
trigger it to "fix" it. it does it anyways. it turns all.
the. crap. back. on. and i suspect there's nothing i can do
but leave that notification there forever, because even
looking at it for too long...

that i did not use windows from, oh... 2013-17. it made
music-ing very tough; that's partly why i just used milky.
then work made me use windows. then they gave me a new
laptop and "oh just keep the old one." and so, cool, music
computer. that, by this time, i was like -- windows 10 is
the usual nonsense, but it's actually pretty alright -- and,
yes, now they'll shadualy grit it up to encourage me to

but i use reaper now; that runs on linux. i've been very
very careful to avoid any direct dependency on windows. what
kills me is that the fucking arturia shit is win/mac only,
and you cannot change certain settings on the keystep pro /
beatstep pro without plugging it into the computer, and
downloading their fucking like... it's kind of like
downloading steam, or origin, or epic store or whatever,
it's a whole platform for you to buy licenses to their
million shits and fuck off i just want to change what the
drum pads are assholes

and it's like, here is the same walled-garden nonsense,
except it's taken over plugins and some of the features of
my "hardware"

anyways i think i could just throw the windows laptop in a
drawer for whenever i need to deal with arturia, leave it
off 350 days a year. it should last for a while. then just
build a new setup on linux, which will be pretty much the
same as my old setup, because i don't even use anything
aside from the default reaper plugs.

theres gotta be smart people working ways around this

oh, of course there are. the problem is that there are also
smart people being payed to work around smart people working
ways around this nonsense.

"cloud-delivered protection"

fuck the fuck off.

i actually suspect the reason windows began lagging -- like,
literally cursor lagging; haven't seen that in a good many
years -- is because DNS is through a piHole on which i have
blacklisted a large number of internal microsoft domains
used for gathering statistics and blasting ads, obviously
blocked all of bing, etc

so now it's hammering something it can't touch because some
of its other tentacles can touch the open internet, and it's
confused, like: THIS SHOULD WORK and it's just going at it
like a woodpecker and killing the computer

no joke, i am 90% sure

so, bummer again, for some reason windows hides the
"ApplicationData" in WinSCP. i'm just copying crap. and
what's in here

oh arturia has a folder. ohhhh look

"id": 561,
"name": "Drum Map",
"paramId": 65,
"globalParamId": 39,
"type": "LIST",
"list": [{ "str": "Custom", "val": 0 }, { "str": "Spark",
"val": 1 }, { "str": "General MIDI", "val": 2 }, { "str":
"Chromatic", "val": 3 }],
"defaultValue": 3

at least all this web 4.20 crap all easily mashable jason

I misread globalparamid as global pyramid at a quick glance,
they are putting illuminati in our synths!

global param ID. that's about as bland and normal as naming
a dog rover

but JSON -- I deliberately mash up "Jason" and "Jay-Sahn"
when I say it aloud since no one seems to be able to make up
their minds how to pronounce it. So I kind of live it
ambiguous in between saying it aloud

but yes, this shit, i'd advise a look. like: has
these graphs of the price history, but it won't give you the
specific dollar amounts. but since it's graphing it, there
data is clearly in there. and yes, they are receiving JSON
data for the past history of price data over GraphQL and
then rendering the graph in your browser. so then i wrote a
script to download the entire JSON price history for the
thing instead.

so i am combing through this fucking windows craptop -- a
thinkpad; possibly now a stinkpad. and i'm looking through
"processes" and i see shit like "google crash handler" or
something and yeh i'll keep ASLR. that, like, that probably
is entirely legit. that even though i have nothing google
open; chrome closed, they've some background shit they'd get
stomped for on linux. but maybe not; i should check there

so i finally bothered after storage filled up again. turns
out mtp-tools actually work like a charm, once i figured out
that... only once you plug the phone in does a hidden menu
show up in settings that lets you select "file transfer" and
alright at least i got the worthless photos and videos off
of it. cool, now, the real point: i can delete them. i do

my phone does not show any space being freed up. i reboot
it, and, oh, another gig or two shows up. fucker.

i find the .recyclebin something or other in some folder in
the thing's file manager and delete it. i'm up to five gigs.
i'm still missing another, like fifteen. fucker

i figure "maybe it'll autoclean" an hours later, still just
five gigs. so i plug it back into the computer and just go
full unix on it; du -cmd1 | sort -ns and i find the
fucking photo gallery app has its own dedicated recycling
bin that is just sitting on thirteen gigs of stuff i'd
"recently deleted" and -- this got me banned from twitter,
but it won't get me banned from here -- i hope whoever made
that design decision in that gallery app dies in a fire.
