It's interesting, I watched that very stupid Netflix "documentary" about the horrors of social networks, which is worth watching just for the chills you get watching supposedly reformed Facebook etc. employees talking very stupidly about the business. There's a tremendously revealing moment when one of these idiots says "but what are the companies supposed to do? Make less profit, and get sued by the shareholders?!" And this, I think, is the crux of the matter, why social networks will always, always opt to make more profit at the expense of anything else, and why news networks will run something about Melania brushing away Donald's hand as they walk down an aisle somewhere, rather than anything more substantial: they appear to have no choice. Do YOU want to be the one to post poor quarterly profits because you didn't lead with Orange Man Headlines? Of course not. |
