nah was too young, i got a muzik magazine speed garage cd back in 97 and rinsed the fucker though. i didn't like all the smooth mj cole style stuff at the time but i can appreciate it now. tbh i think i'd have felt out of place at garage nights, was all about getting dressed up and popping off the champagne, i liked dubstep nights a bit later on
re: tight drums, ghost / groove chronicles might do ya

it's like a faster version of US housey garage with dark, warping bass and a uk vibe... hard to describe but you know when you hear it. tracks like double 99 - RIP groove and judy cheeks - reach and spin

I mainly grew up playing rave sets and followed it into DNB, but used to play a few garage sets with a mate here and there. Was never really fully into the UK 2 step thing though and most garage stuff to me was considered US house like Masters at Work and Todd Terry.
Used to love all Todd Edwards stuff too

loved this stuff when it hit the discotheque. closest thing to idm and so much more interesting to me than the typical house and techno parties. it had the broken beats and stabby rave remnants :) but then most of the songs were ruined by corny vocals, i kind of had to take as a compromise at that time.
now with all (ALL) radio rotation music being full of whiny vocals i dont feel like going back to 2step. its just too smooth for me.
its decent though, just not mine.
