there's so many! and if we include emulator stuff it gets
silly

purely from time spent trying to complete it though: rings
of power on the mega drive. flawed and devilishly hard rpg
but it got its claws in me proper. shooters it's easily
thunderforce iv. platformers, it'd probably be james pond 3:
operation starfish. super hang on for racing games... rising
up through the ranks in challenge mode was great fun and the
music is awesome

final fantasy 1 on NES. you could probably beat that game
in the course of a couple weeks with a dedicated plan, maps,
and a schedule... but, i played casually (and was a
compulsive level-grinder) and it took months to play it all
the way through. played it for an absurd number of hours but
probably only completed it a half-dozen times over the
course of a couple years, before DOS games took over my
focus. i think i have some crusty ancient remixes on vgmix.
never got into any of the sequels

is this just console, or are we allowing DOS games? because
i had an NES with, like, fifteen games and then a computer
and then an N64 with like six games

i used to have an NES game called clu-clu land, and some guy
at school was like "i'll trade you this game for that game
for a bit" and i promptly never saw it again. it was quite
good as i remember

super mario world / duck hunt was my first console game
ever, and much love for that, and mario 2/3 as well.
however, what really took me by storm was Rad Racer 2. i
have a very crisp memory of mum allowing me to rent that at
videosmith when i was 6 or 7. i started playing it, then my
dad, then my mum, and it was promptly the only time both my
parents were ever glued to a video game with me -- and,
like, i didn't have to ask, they just bought it. but, damn
it, the moment never really re-occurred. can't remember
either of them playing nintendo with me beyond that

i never got terribly far in metroid, but it was still a
solid afternoon to get as far as i could before dying; not
write down the obscure glyphs to resume later.

iron sword was, in retrospect, pretty trippy.

mickey mouscapade was also pretty trippy

mum bought me "wall street kid" i think with the idea that
maybe i'd get into the idea of trading stocks and become a
rich stockbroker someday, and i think that's why pretty much
any kid wound up having that game i suspect. their whole
business plan

“super mario world / duck hunt ”

I guess you mean super Mario Bros.

Never played the first FF but I have it on the mini nes.
Might give it a go. I came to rpg games a bit later as when
I was a little nipper I didn’t like turn based combat. I
was impatient, and how I was wrong.

i got pretty bad at video games. these days i mostly collect
roms and only really play the games when friends are
visiting

i was pretty good at playing jump n runs. i finished super
ghouls n ghosts on snes, which was an intense playthrough.
when i played it recently, i couldn't pass the first level.
but the kids i played the game with were even worse. games
are different these days

there are a few awesome shmups on md, like thunder force 3.
but i don't have the patience to play them these days…

another cool md shmup that you might not know

Gynoug was great. I still have a boxed copy that I bought in
a 2nd hand book store in the late 90s. Completed it on my
then-girlfriend's Megadrive and then chucked it in a draw
till I acquired one myself a few years later.

Xcom - Terror from the Deep
Chaos
Super Mario 3
Vice Project Doom
Castlevania
Castlevania 3
Blue Shadow
Micro Machines II
Mega Bomberman
Balloon Fight
Balloon Kid
Puyo Puyo 2

Anyone remember bayou billy on the nes? Wasn’t a great
game and was stupidly tough iirc. TMNT was quite hard but I
loved it anyway!

“super mario world / duck hunt ”

I guess you mean super Mario Bros.

in the US, the NES was often sold as a bundle with the
console, two controllers, the light gun, and a cartridge
that had both SMB1 and Duck Hunt on it at once. perhaps they
didn't have that deal across the pond?

in any case, while i mostly played SMB, i did quite like
duck hunt. i love that the light gun had a sight; when i
discovered that i got much better. getting better at duck
hunt was a lot more engaging than getting better at SMB,
which i don't think i ever actually beat without warp. i
also enjoyed walking right up to the TV and shooting the
ducks from point-blank for a LOL. it's not viable as a
long-term strategy, once the ducks speed up you're better
off backing away from the telly a bit

Never played the first FF but I have it on the mini nes.
Might give it a go. I came to rpg games a bit later as when
I was a little nipper I didn’t like turn based combat. I
was impatient, and how I was wrong.

FF1 is not a game for today. it is for when you are ten, in
a time before the internet exists. if you do try, make sure
you have a copy of the relevant Nintendo Power (tm) issue,
as blundering around the dungeons can get quite tedious
otherwise

if i tried to play it again, either i would get distracted
after a few rounds, or get sucked back into it completely
and get little done. either way, i probably shouldn't

we have a thred about DOS games somewhere, don't we? i
remember making this list somewhere on here before

i'll do it again and, perhaps, find the thred later, bump
it, see how i did in comparison. i'm also lumping in some
win95 games that could have been DOS

one must fall 2097
jazz jackrabbit
terminal velocity
tyrian
space quest -- 5 and 6 are the best
lemmings
simcity 2000
wolf3d, doom, quake
pickle wars
the incredible machine + 2
hunter hunted
space cadet pinball
lords of the realm II
castles
tetris 2.0 for win 3.1
taipei
autocon

searching for castles i came across this. i'm not
sure why i remember so crisply, as i only played it for a
day or three

it's awesome how much of this archive.org has set up and
organized. i should probably donate or something

i only had an snes at the time, but recently discovered the
streets of rage 2 & 3 soundtracks on genesis, i might have
already posted this remaster not sure if the dl links still
work
https://sorr.forumotion.net/t573-streets-of-rage-123-orig...

been playing super castlevania iv, favorite track/stage:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzXtYhCoTpM

i think my fav snes games were probably mode7 games like
mario kart and pilot wings. yoshi's island is pretty good.
oh harvest moon was good, played it on emulator. one snes
game that i discovered recently and might check out is act
raiser 1&2, looks like a weird genre mashup
