"I'm sad!" she said, seeming genuinely hurt. "It's a bad mark on him. I feel bad for him."
As she spoke, the crowd around the bar had already begun to thin out. Some shuffled across the lobby to have dinner at the hotel restaurant. Others headed for the doors. No one bought a round of drinks to commiserate.
By 9 p.m., Trump was in the middle of his counterprogramming rally in Michigan, but few people were watching by the time Fox News broke in to cover it.
Just after 9 outside the hotel, an older man in a black jacket walked briskly toward the entrance, shouting to no one in particular. "I want to know who stays in this hotel!" he said. "What kind of person stays in this hotel?"

youtube is now normietube. you vote for things with your time, attention, and money. dont like youtube? dont continue to be an enabler to it by using it. the only measure of ones convictions on the matter is if they can walk away from it. otherwise there is no point in saying words about things one disagrees with while putting forth no actual actions to remedy the problem.

that's actually quite on my mind. i use a proxy setup, most of my web is bounced through whatever, and google has gotten increasingly obnoxious about this. your address is not verified! please spend five minutes marking traffic cones for our AI training!
i literally get that when i go to google.com, these days. i can get to it if i need, either by solving the captcha or shrugging off my privacy and going direct.
google maps is middling. mostly it just lets me use it without hassle; sometimes it demands i do mechanical turk werk for their ends.
i think ahead to a future where profit matters so much to youtube that they throw up that wall whenever anyone tries to view a video. you can feel the consideration happening at the other end: well, web search, ok, we're still the best, so we can throw our weight around here. maps, they have some competitors, so, alright, sometimes we'll give it a pass. youtube, however, is too fucking huge, and if we start systemically blocking people from youtube the plebs will revolt
but that may not last. one day, youtube will repeatedly be all "solve this recaptcha" for every link, and at that point, i will properly hate it. it will have been a nice run -- to be able to be all, 'oh, yeah, try this track' and just link it. sure, i can always upload an mp3, and i might go back to that -- but the frictionless experience of being able to pull out a song from the back of your brain (even if you don't have it) and link it on the spot is wonderful and i will miss it.
meanwhile, when it comes to politics, i fucking hope that happens and google annoys the piss out of everyone and youtube is over

steven pinker is so funny
i'm sure i've written this here before, but i'm not sure if you saw it, so i'll write it again.
when i was pretty young, my dad had a postdoc position at MIT. sometimes he'd bring me along, and i loved it, because there were all sorts of computers and tech, some of which i was actually allowed to use.
this was where i was introduced to the stunningly good-for-the-time (and still good now) game "Crystal Quest" on the lab's Mac Plus. seriously, it is a great game
so i'm playing it, and eventually i realize i'm never even going to crack the top ten high score. everyone else in the lab has thoroughly killed it already
the top score was, frankly, inhuman. over a million points, while the number two was only a few hundred thousand. the name read: STEVEN PINKER
"this guy must be great," i think.
"who's steven pinker?" i ask my dad. he is confused (does your six-year-old ask you about steven pinker?). i show him the high score, and he promptly cracks up.
"oh, no, that's a joke," he replies. "steven pinker would never play that game."
"why not?" i ask.
"..."
"he's too uptight."

Barry Loudermilk, a Georgia Republican, declared that Trump had been given less due process than Jesus Christ himself.
If Trump is a martyr, who are his persecutors? You could watch the debate with the sound off and understand. All day, Republican speeches delivered by old white men alternated with Democratic speeches from women, people of color and young people. White men make up 90 percent of the Republican caucus and 38 percent of the Democratic one, and the day dramatized the representational gulf in the starkest visual terms.
as strange as this may sound, this was actually a vast relief to me. couple that with the grim reaper statistics that indicate that this demographic is obese, alcoholic, addicted to opiates, and putting a major dent in the US mortality-rate curve.
however, i should check my jaundice -- i am white, in this age range, i drink too much, and i am a bit fat. not being a republican does significantly increase my life expectancy, despite this.
this leads me to the bottom line: we may be in for a rough time, but eventually, these people will be outvoted via a combination of mortality rates and general statistics (e.g. hispanic people will be a majority in the US in X years, like it or not). as long as we make it another decade or so, humanity (and america) will likely maintain.

if you've never heard of cape cod, you are not missing out. in an engineering sense, however, it is a fascinating case-study. there are strange conclusions like "the air conditioner killed cape cod's economy, and the infrastructure is currently finishing it off. sharks don't help things"
cape cod, along with ~the hamptons~, had been a popular vacation spot for decades. in massachusetts, in the summer, august can break 100F (~38C, via javascript algebra). water, oceans especially, act like a capacitor for heat. so while boston is 100F, cape cod is is 67F/20C. before air conditioners were a thing, everyone who had the money got a house out there to beat the heat. the same is true of nantucket, martha's vinyard, all that
cape cod has additional problems. the only way to get in and out of cape cod is route 6, which is like trying to eat a steak through a straw. if you wanted to fix the economics of cape-cod overnight, you would bulldoze the tiny, 55mph limited-shit, and put in four lanes of 65mph-limit balls.
but the old shits in cape cod do not want this. no, this will bring in too many people. the young folk will party, and they might even party late
so you wind up with a slowly suffocating community of increasingly old, conservative retirees with no one flowing in to replace them. i deeply pity anyone who grows up in cape cod, frankly.
being a summer/tourist town, the whole economy dries up in the winter. throw opiates into this, and you have bored people with nothing to do for seven months and a huge opiate problem.
so, like, these problematic old white folk could fix things, but they really don't want to. when you start to realize they'll fall out eventually, you're not as stressed over their retarded fucking attitude

I have been taking prescription tranquilizers since 1966. I have used almost every kind imaginable: phenothiazines, chlorpromazines and others I cannot recall. But Halcion, a chemical firstcousin to the tranquilizer Xanax, is in a class by itself for mind-altering side effects. It is not a classic sedative, which basically just slow things down. No, benzodiazepenes are described by Halcion's maker, the Upjohn Company, as "anxiolytics," meaning they literally cut the anxiety in your brain.
When Halcion hits you, it's as if an angel of the Lord appears in your bedroom and tells you that nothing is important, that everything you were worried about is happening on Mars and that nirvana, Lethe and the warm arms of mother are all waiting for you. People who have used heroin tell me Halcion is better than heroin for making bad thoughts simply disappear.
--ben stein
and we've wandered back on topic, as i now must link an orbital music vid via... youtube.

In his speech, Trump mocked Democratic challenger Pete Buttigieg, the Indiana mayor, for having what he said was an unpronounceable last name, and told attendees Democrats were waging war against religion.
“These angry radicals want to impose absolute conformity by censuring speech, tearing down crosses and symbols of faith and banning religious believers from public life.”
He got a big reaction from the crowd when he promised to bring religion into U.S. schools. A clause in the U.S. Constitution prohibits the government from promoting one religion over the other, which means public schools don’t promote prayer or religious symbols.
when i was in first grade, it was the lingering tail era of the days in which the school-wide intercom would squawk, and we'd all -- kindergarten through fifth grade -- get up and put our hands over our hearts and say of the pledge of allegiance, and then sing my country tis of thee or whatever.
it was cloying and homogenizing and it bothered me even before i knew politics existed. i liked the singing together, actually... but, like church, the message of it all felt very controlling. even at six, i had my doubts about pledging my undying loyalty to the school intercom. thank god the jesus freaks didn't get a spot on the program; let's please keep it that way
