i have thought about buying an asr-10. i could actually wait
another month and buy one. it would be a great master
keyboard. it has great effects. but i don't know how i'd use
it for it's intended use. i sure would sample sounds and
record them to the computer. how long can they sample
anyway? but i first have to buy an audio interface. i'm
still using the onboard soundcard. so that's where my money
has to go first.

the ensoniq stuff is great! EPS/EPS16/ASR10 also have
internal tuning tables

read here:
http://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/

i have polyphonic aftertouch with my QuNexus but never
really used it with a synth

that looks really good dadonck
layered 2 op, almost 4 op with sliders for control
that looks better than my pss 780

here is the best info i could find about it:
LAZY_TITLE

its about the pss 390 which is the same as the pss 380.
Different is just the fancy, coloured interface

>>here is the important part where he compares it to the pss
780permits e.g. a reasonable sounding human voice "female
chorus"), and it has many wild noise presets with complex
pitch LFO, arpeggiator and retrigger effects (e.g. ringing
"mandolin", "telephone", "helicopter", "machine gun",
gritty and fat "brass ensemble", arpeggios in "crystal",
"comet" etc., lots of great siren- like howling stuff like
"ufo" or "ghost"), which I always expected to be standard
with Yamaha FM instruments. But when I later bought the
semi- professional Yamaha PSS-780 (the most advanced and
most versatile top of the line FM PortaSound that was ever
made - with MIDI, 61 keys, pitchbend wheel, 8 drumpads,
sequencer etc.), I had to discover that this one includes
none of these great effects but uses only very plain 2
operator FM for any sounds (although with a few more
parameters), and it contains also no funny noise presets
(like "helicopter")

ups:

again, here

The PSS-390 (also my Fujitone 6A) uses 4 operators for many
of its sounds (i.e. quasi 2 internally layered 2 op sounds
=>half polyphony but more realistic/ thicker, which permits
e.g. a reasonable sounding human voice "female chorus"), and
it has many wild noise presets with complex pitch LFO,
arpeggiator and retrigger effects (e.g. ringing "mandolin",
"telephone", "helicopter", "machine gun", gritty and fat
"brass ensemble", arpeggios in "crystal", "comet" etc., lots
of great siren- like howling stuff like "ufo" or "ghost"),
which I always expected to be standard with Yamaha FM
instruments. But when I later bought the semi- professional
Yamaha PSS-780 (the most advanced and most versatile top of
the line FM PortaSound that was ever made - with MIDI, 61
keys, pitchbend wheel, 8 drumpads, sequencer etc.), I had to
discover that this one includes none of these great effects
but uses only very plain 2 operator FM for any sounds
(although with a few more parameters), and it contains also
no funny noise presets (like "helicopter"). I also
downloaded manuals of other MIDI PortaSounds with FM
synthesizer, and they all lack these great effects. Possibly
Yamaha feared here to confuse customers with too many
editable parameters, but they could have simply kept them
uneditable as already some other parameters are. Possibly
also the complex LFO and envelope effects would have
disturbed the delicate timing of MIDI transmission because
they are likely generated by the main CPU and not controlled
by the sound chip itself. There is also no FM PortaSound
with MIDI and synth sliders. With the PSS-390 particularly
the noise effect presets can be easily tweaked into the most
fantastic and bizarre tekkno sounds, and since these off all
don't exist in the "professional" MIDI PortaSounds, it is
difficult to rate which FM PortaSound is the best or most
versatile instrument.

if the pss 380 had midi, i would have bought it already :)
im still thinking about buying one, as it can be a nice
noise machine. also, good sample material :)

here is a video of a guy playing it through a looper:
LAZY_TITLE

i underestimated fm hardware synths all these years, even
2-ops mermaidman :)

i always thought, why buy fm hardware when u can do much
more with fm on a computer. The volca fm i bought sounds
really great to me and makes me look for other older fm
stuff that has this… timbre. Pretty shure it comes from
the DCA`s which you could emulate in other ways, but its
also good to just sit in front of some synths, sequencers
and effects without much computer around

i have an akai s2000 with eb16 fx anyway
i bought the s2000 in 2004 when i worked in mcdonalds for
£200 lol, now they cost about £50-£75
can use it as a multitimbral polysynth, can do lush pads

akai s2000? cool! u can get one in germany for 50 euros. is
there actually a version with multiple outs?

the vosyr app didnt work for u? i like the volca sample, but
i would like something that can sample and trim easily and
on the fly. the korg mirco sampler seems ineresting but its
much too expensive second hand

it has room for the expansion card but doesn't come with it
by default
i bought an s3000xl from a car boot sale for £5, it has a
dodgy screen though. i fancied ripping the card out of the
s3000xl and putting it in the s2000, but it's a slightly
more complicated job than putting an eb16 in.

akai s950

the s2000 is a cool thing and its cheap. which is cool, too.
i try to avoid expensive, boutique gear (not talking about
roland here), doesn't matter if i can afford it.

but right now i'm thinking about buying a digitakt, which
would be the most expensive music making thing i own. …
and i buy a Behringer model d (maybe 4 of them, lol) when
its out. and then i stop, seriously

today i just played with a tape player, an analog delay and
an analog stereo chorus behind that. i recorded little synth
lines on cassette, slowed them down with the player and put
that though the delay and the chorus. just pretty

I was reading about the rumours somewhere on MuffWiggler, I
think. Seems to be an analogue(ish) poly synth. I think i
have enough of that. I really love my Alpha Juno for that.
And i could never get anything out of the Minilogue, that I
wanted to go on with. And I tried for hours, because I
really wanted to like it. And i still like the whole concept
and form but with the sound something was missing for me.
Maybe I didn't try hard enough, but then most of the stuff I
have right now gives me immediate fun. I need that right
now. Musicmaking is my happy freetime. But I like what Korg
is doing overall. They have much better ideas then Roland
these days.

If Korg would make an FM synth in the size of a Minilogue,
with a lot of knobs and sliders and all this motion
recording. And a good bit crusher and a decent reverb and a
stereo chorus in the effect section, I would throw my money
at them. Maybe thats too experimental, because FM doesn't
offer enough real time modulation to not sound like dying
chips. But then i look at Akemie's Castle and think yeah!

new product out from elektron, a digital fm multitimbral
synth with sequencer. even if you new gear bores you check
out the sound samples at the bottom. they got some really
great musicians to do demos. one of the tracks is like
something out of sonic the hedgehog.
