He's the nicest guy in Dance Music but I've never been able
to "love" or really get into much he's done. And that's a
terrible thing to say. But a lot of people do love his music
so that's OK. Epic DJ though.

i'm pretty sure kid 606 tried to put spiders in vibert's
tracks once or twice, but vibert's tracks are fucking
unspiderable -- unspiderable.

Naw, man- Vibert spread hard- I believe- due to his skill in
mixing/creating next-level snares and claps (and
secondarily, groove). I'm pretty serious about that.
Snares and claps are such subtleties in music, but when
they're as good as Vibert's, they can carry tracks pretty
damn far. Listen to most any Vibert track and imagine
different snares/claps-- it's just not the same.

Well also, he used to do a fuckload more pop stuff, remixes,
etc., which is why he's on like 50 compilations, when during
the same era, his underground music peers were trying to get
as far away from that shit as possible.

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2017-08-02 17:08 [#02526724]

vibert descibed his process as something like: "i build up a
couple bars with everything and get the mix perfect and then
i move it into a folder marked 'done.' then i unroll the
loop into a song. this is my favorite part, it's like
telling a story."

he's also mentioned seeing even aphex get stuck messing with
distortion; messing with the same little bit for hours, for
little result.

i -- and i suspect many others -- are somewhat the opposite.
i have lots of entire tracks in 8bar loops that i haven't
unrolled because it was more fun for me to make a new one
than it was to unroll the existing one.

so, i figure vibert is much better at finishing tracks than
most. there's more to it than that, but i figure it helps
his popularity

spider here, i would say vibert is about as popular as he
should be. he's prolific, i've probably listened to less
than 10% of all the stuff he's put out. personally i find
him kind of predictable and his stuff is too
technical/clean, maybe it comes from keeping his releases to
specific genres (a dnb record, an acid record, a disco
record, etc.), but that's just an impression, sure you could
find counterexamples. but there's a degree of consistency,
and he's probably good live.

that would be the downside to preferring finishing tracks
over fussing with the little bits for ages

My ex-girlfriend used to hang out with Richard and Luke and
whatever that whole "London underground crew" in the early
and mid-2000's, and she was telling me that she actually did
talk to Luke Vibert about making snares. Like, he actually
brings that shit up in conversation.

That's how good his snares are.
