The one qualification I have here is what is the best ambient album from the first second of the first track to the last second of the last track.
My pick: Biosphere - Substrata
I honestly don't think there's a better ambient album out there. It's haunting, melancholic and flows perfectly from track to track. Each time I put it on, I end up listening to the entire album.

Eno - On Land
By the way, I finally listened to the last track of one of my "stars of the lid" albums that I've had for about a year. The previous track had literally put me to sleep - every time. :)

Cabbog: Biosphere does this gorgeous ambient music. I have Substrata 2 and recommend it to anyone despite that it costed me $50-60. It was well worth it. Some of the most serious ambient music out there. Serious as in...you need to sit down for a couple hours straight. And its like a sad movie too...not something you'll be pulling out all the time...but when you do its something else.

Global Communication: Pentamerous Metamorphosis
heard Eno's Music for Airports and Apollo. didn't really much care for either one, though the concensus here speaks of On Land. haven't heard it but i might be willing to give it a go. how much better is it than the other two.
@ 1st i thought this thing was asking what the best ambient album cover was; at which point i might say Reload: A Collection of Short Stories.

to Krendo POLAR SEQUENCES is the title of the Album. Tromos norway, 70 degrees north in the arctic region, in the middle of the most active northern lights zone. In summer time, land of the midnight sun, in winter total darkness. In october 1995, as a part of the annual Polar music festival, Geir Jenssen of Biosphere & Bobby Bird of higher intelligence agency, were commissioned by NOR concerts to collaborate together on a musical project to take place in Geirs home town of Tromso Norway. The brief was for them to perform 3 concerts using sound sourced from the area as a basis of the music - the machinery of the local mountain cable lift, the snow, the ice shifting. The performances from which polar sequences is taken, took place on top of a mountain in Tromso in a cabin reached by cable car. This show would have been amazing, your in norway under the northern lights listening to some scary trippy cold ambient, they describe cold with sound, it crazy. Anyway good luck finding this Album if you do buy it.
