i like you despite i think you disorted the essence of
the sk1 in most of your catalogue, hathathathat.

let's divert this back to the right (wrong in the right way)
thread, shall we? almost everything on riced out records by
nevenen was written 2011-2013. i had the sk-1, then, but it
had three switches and i had things like a prophet vs to
play with.

i did use a lot of bent stuff, though. a particular bent
casio i had that would flawlessly handle midi was a real
trip. that's one of the synths i do still have... and that
was the one that would wiggle and warble in response to my
subwoofer pulling down the watts.

i surmise that certain spazzy blasts of casio fragments
sound good with bass noises, and by fumbling around for ages
( looking for the
sweet spots ) i wound up doing that without even
noticing. i just did what sounded good, right? and it
sounded wicked.

eventually, i noticed: holy crap, farting out ugly bass
resonance with the juno makes the casio dance and solo! or
something. i actually don't remember. it was happening all
the time already; it's not like discovering what i was doing
gave me any reason to change things.

it did give me ideas, though: well, the sound system is an
active participant, why not get the room involved? so i ran
some SM57's around with lots of XLR. there was room mic and
upstairs mic and other room mic in other room etc. and this
allowed the room to interact with the bass which interacted
with the casio. i absolutely adored spending hours in this
strange recursive microcosm. get everything unstable as shit
and then tap the sm58 (bodged on an architect lamp
mounting). the single impulse exploded the whole basement at
that point

here is a track i made in that microcosm:

space paranoids ii

technically: the track's funk would not exist without a long
run of carefully archived/deconstructed "lucky accidents"
landing me on shit like using the sound of a casio freaking
out to actively manipulate the way in which the casio
freaked out.

anorakage: the prophet VS's arp will hold 140 notes or
something like that. the track's melody is a spare fragment
from an MPC that fractally builds itself up with a MIDI loop
that is done whenever the prophet VS runs out of notes (and
then repeats (repeats))

aesthetically: "wind chimes at night."

FSLOL: this casio also has a crappy digital parrot somewhere in the
fourth octave if you navigate to cheesy tropical ointment.

i didnt want to offend you whit that sk1 observation. bout
this last track, if the sk1 is in it, i cant hear it. there
was no need to rely on lucky happenings back then, the
sampler had the funk in it, no need to construct it.

you must be really dumb to have an sk1 and look for funk
like you do in front of a computer. like being blind to
colors or something.

old setup:

third person

sounds like i yell "disco" at 2:15 or so, but i really have
no idea. that's why the mic was there: so i could mumble
incoherently whenever the need struck. i miss all that gear
a lot, but i don't miss being fat particularly much

first person

casio begins to interact with the sound system around a
minute in

pajama pants (first person) @ ~0:00 - 0:17 :: initializing.
stop the mpc. reset the sh101 sequencer. start the mpc.
clear my mind and sync up with the beat. drop in a beat

pajama pants (first person) @ ~0:17 - 0:21 :: i love this
video because you can literally see my brain click into the
groove. the camera wiggles around throughout, obviously, but
it's like someone flicked a switch and turned on steadycam.
suddenly, it's just... still. serene. the movements are more
viscous. if you can pick up on what i mean, here, then you
understand something i have a lot of trouble verbalizing

alright so you click this link and it (2:34) ripples around a
bit. hear those sort of... i dunno, one-up noises? coin-get
noises? sort of nintendo? it's interspersed with this
extremely cheesy synth slap bass noise.

the slap bass noise is coming from the mpc's midi that i
programmed in
the casio has autoriddim drums that sync to the midi clock
the casio is bent and the midi interacts with the drums and
vice versa
the bass from an 800w adam sub8 subwoofer interacts with all
this to suck down the juice
the casio spontaneously drops those coin noises in with the
air of an experienced session musician. it's never the same
twice, but it's always got mad groove. all i programmed in
was the slap bass noises.
the coin1up sorta noises (2:51, 2:25, 2:57 etc) are emergent
complexity derived from sitting in a basement and farting it
up hardcore.

afterwards i spent hours and hours in adobe premiere
splicing the video around to match up with the funk the
casio had dropped. it took forever... but, yeah, recording
the tune, the casio just drops it. love that thing

this has drive

ok i will shout my mouth and not critic your music anymore.
but dont say you make music with an sk1 when you put it for
decoration. say there's the sk1 in it, but making a track
entirely off sk1 sounds (not sequencing) is another pair of
shoes imho

as long as you throw beats like these

the bugs bunny audio was off of youtube. unedited, just
looping. i realized that the whole little skit had a tempo
to it and i wrote a track around it. took me like a dozen
tries to get it right. not quite in sync, you know? but in
the end, it sounds tight enough that most people think i
probably spent nineteen hours splicing it up in a wave
editor rather than writing the track around the timing of it
and then trying nineteen times until i got a good one.

the result of this was a high-fidelity stereo recording in
cubase (along with six or seven out-takes that were better
than most) and i generally avoided meddling with it. too
fussy. not in the spirit of what i was doing

so, to answer your question: NO

i also can't be held responsible if you pluck a few bits
from my tide of text and string them together in a manner
that is incorrect (though understandable). i recorded a
couple dozen SK-1 only tracks, and they're all posted
beginning of this thread.

you kept talking about it, it wove into my tapestry of
nonsense, i bumped the thread, and here we are....
generating new information on the internet based on a gulf
of misunderstanding

i sank thousands of dollars into music and haven't made a
dime and poured myself into it into the cash ran out and i
had to give it up and now i'm just typing about it on the
internet. meanwhile, president trump can get up in front of
the world and tell complete porkers. why am i held to some
sort of... artistic integrity? journalistic standard?

this just in: i also have a series of tracks using just a
circuit-bent yamaha GX-1; thread coming soon

here, now i'll just paste more rambling from a totally
different forum about more of the same anorak tunnel:

Around 2009 I recorded a track called METRO HAMMER. I
was discussing it (well, blathering) and it dawned on me
that this name is a synaesthetic muffin of the shape of the
reverb on the james bond horn orch hit and the shape of some
reverb kicked off by some sound art installed on the boston
red line. kendall square stop, i think. anyways, the james
bond orch hit was the core, and i could feel something
there, but it was a distant point cloud and i was only just
starting to appreciate autechre; lots to learn u noe.

so around 2011 i'm on a load of incredibly powerful
drugs, and i find the old METROHAMMER folder on my akai mpc
1000 (sadly now gone). i'm not sure quite what happened, but
the irritation of that thing not being quite the stuff i
wanted in the jam just took hold, or maybe it was just
drugs. but twelve hours later there is a tense mechanism of
fender 1/4" cables and midi feedback loops that is stable
enough, sometimes, to try for a pass. the actual audio from
the relevant scene in goldeneye is looping on one track
continuously. i've written the whole song and set all the
tempos to line up, but this is not computer shit, it's
things 3x daisy chained, pressing shuffle on a dx200 at the
right time, and yeah. took me like a dozen tries to nail it,
to get all the fucking loops to line up perfect. but they
line up perfect.

the video is also good, i made it in premiere later on
different but equally powerful drugs.

mp3
video

there is absolutely no casio SK-1 in this track, the
video, this post, or anywhere else -- ever (are you happy?).

here is the story of "honey, i melted the party"

it all started as an aim conversation with some guy named
"meathead." i was declaiming w/rt how bed bath and beyond is
just such a fucking mess; so fucking claustrophic. squeezing
past fat ladies and stepping over towels. then he laid it on
me: what if that were purgatory? what if you were stuck in
bed, bath and beyond... forever? for eternity? there was
some obvious debate about do you have to use the bathroom,
do you need to eat, but i was already laying down tracks. i
combed through youtube and found lots of footage of kids
fucking around the stores. some dweeb who reminds me of me
when i was twelve. spastic teenage girls. then the actual
jam is a real shred, that eh eh chick drum noise getting
stuck in your bike tire and chewed up, melted the party,
yep.

fun fact: while writing this, i bit into an overcooked pork
chop (shake n bake) and i had the sensation of a 13.5 foot
flanger wave flowing through the nexus point of crunch in my
teeth. the size of it, that's what i remember. it was so
clearly 13.5 feet, i know this because i marked the
subjective range with points and then got a tape measure. i
never went back and checked if this is an actual parallel to
the length of a flange wave or if it was just how pork chops
work on phenylethylamines

here is a riced out yugo post about "the feeling"

still be conveyed.

is that fantasy or actual rambling?

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2017-01-29 22:13 [#02511651]

it is an example of itself. it's actual experience woven
into a fantasy gestalt, transmitted through the medium of
ungettable references. i'll throw out a few:

- DJ Shadow -- Endtrocing - "changeling" has a sample of
some guy saying, "we are unable to transfer your call due to
conscious neural interference." i vaguely recall this was
what triggered me to write the post in the first place.
probably had the track on.

- the link goes to a black midi youtube vid i was raving
about back in the burial thread. the last post on the first
page (linked) starts the tirade, the whole second page is
thoughts on john cage, 4'33, information overload, and
parrots. the video accurately represents the feeling of
being informationally overwhelmed.

- the link is titled "multidimensional unicor" and
crossfades into a meme invented a chap known as
"Salvatorin." he's always: "corndawg? u got that cornd?"
writing the word "unicorn" triggered the memory.

- field algebra fields: i was still stuck on corn, that led
me to field, field led me to algebra, algebra led me to
field

- neocortical interface of sufficient bandwidth: reference
to the ST:TNG episode in which lieutenant broccoli is stobed
by an alien probe and temporarly develops an IQ of >9000.
he's trying to save the entireprise, but things are just.
too. slow. more bandwidth! need a better interface! so he
goes to the holodeck and has it build a "neural interface."
i decided that wasn't star trek enough and so i went with
neocortical

the rest: i've had some amazing experiences on drugs. at
least, i think i did, because when they wore off, i had
trouble re-assembling exactly what it was i experienced. for
a few hours, my brain had been huge. now it's tiny again.
lt. broccoli said: "i can remember doing all these things,
but i don't remember how or why i did them." flowers for the
algermon

it's also about people not getting what i write.
