i hate that term!!!
i know we've been through this many times, but seriously, i
feel like a mongo trying to explain what music i like when
talking to people.."er, yeah, it's called IDM...intelligent
dance music...sort of."
Who invented this stupid term? YOU?

The only thing worse than that term is people who constantly
complain about it.

Sorry that was harsh, I just hear this on this board and in
the soulseek chatroom all the time, this will easily spark
the 30th discussion on this topic on this board.

hahahaha I think the term is bad, but I thik braindance
isn't any better.
I think it should be called "IDM" but from now on all
acronyms should be stripped from it. It's "IDM" and it
doesn't stand for anything!

the term 'Electronica' is way worse

Most of us here have a higher appreciation for music than
most. I have a friend that is a critic of the term Hard
Core. He says it's stupid. I tell him it is just a way to
explain things.

The term IDM is just a classification for those that need
it.

no, why can't we just call it "electronic"? or "Drill&bass"
for that matter

How do I explain to someone that knows nothing about music.
I don't want to classify Warp, Rephlex and Planet-U with
most of the crap that clubs play. I do consider Aphex,
Squarepusher and the like to be more intelligent than most
musicians.

Some wanker media type coined the term 'IDM' Basterdized
from the A.I. series from Warp. It was quite clever as he
got paid for writing the artical + it sets up an argument
for the press to follow, so many journalists get paid.
Every month magazines have to fill their pages with
something....... why not create a new sub genre, include
fashion/buzz-words etc .

3 pages filled....the wheel turns. Bring Bionic arse core,
that's what I say

The truth is...
I was listening to IDM before I knew to call it that.
I was listening to Hardcore Punk before I knew what it was.

I agree with zguru. Although I would hardly ever tell
someone that didn't know the music I listen to that
my music is Intelligent Dance Music. I just say electronic
music. Then they quickly forget about it and move on with
their insignificant lives.

If someone tried hard enough, they could write a doctor's
thesis on genres and subgenres of modern music.

One time in school, I did a project over all of the bands
related to Pearl Jam. Of course nobody cared about all the
research that went into it. I even made a family tree with
all of the related bands and projects.

It's really hard talking to the common folk.

i think URB made it up. from listening to afx

to quote sean:

"it doesn't exist
as usual some journalists have tried to create a scene where
there is none. it makes a lot of music they don't understand
easier to write about.. it means anyone who's seen as
'glitch' can be neatly swept away from the public eye when
the press have decided they've spent enough time celebrating
this music they never liked anyway. … like all scenes,
dead the minute it was born.
it's a common enough thing. over the years we've been lumped
in many different scenes and genres by writers too cowardly
to admit their own tastes are subjective"

If you tell someone that you listen to a more intelligent
form of music, they act offended, like you think you are
better than them.

I just tell them that they need a GED to understand IDM.

glitchhop jungleesque drumhop techno.

I don't think it was journalists that coined IDM, I thought
it was just some music fans who started the IDM-List
some time ago. It was originally just going to be a Rephlex
mailing list.

Xanatos: Alberto Balsalm is not drill&bass

I hate it so much with that "Is it techno?" bit in
conversations Mr. Flappy. I know all too much of that lol.
And I hate answering no all the time. Thats why Im going to
be making a "It's Not Techno!" t-shirt someday.

But this does bring up a good topic though. What DO we call
this music? Yes Aphex Twin is under "IDM" to answer
someone's question. So is Autechre, Squarepusher and
Brothomstates. We gotta think up something to tell the
common folk or else it will always be "Is it techno?"

If you really want a genre title to put this varied music
in...... you need something like---

Rock...Jazz....Hip-hop etc.

Something not-so-litteral, Similar to what Ae do with their
titles.

There is no direct link, you've got to listen before you can
dismiss.

I don't think you can go too wrong with 'electronica' or
'electronic music' people in the states don't tend to really
have anything to relate that too and they just say: 'oh',
and like I said before, they go on with their lives. If
they are still interested, then you can play them some, and
I usually do.

Amonbrune: It was rhetorical, I was just responding to
AlbertoBalsalm's comment, (check the follow up)

"electronic listening music" seems fine to me or
"experimetal electronic" or "post rock"... i don't give a
damn about the classification or genre, i just care about
the music itself.

I think Rolling Stone calls it "at home techno" or "home
listening", implying that most of it is not dance worthy or
club play worthy.

i reckon Aphex is quite "well-known" for the type of music
he makes...and he represents the music i listen to. i was
quite amused when i read the reviews of Kid A, especially
Idioteque, it was "aphex-ish beats", "aphex-ish" this and
that..

I suppose everyone's right about the whole "electronica" or
"electronic music" thing. We have to come to an
understanding that the music is far too above our heads for
mear mortals to classify with meer words. An impossible
feet.

I say the whole IDM scene should be explained with a
mathematical formula.

call the music: x2 [34x98] 2/3 + 45(d[ds]d+34 = 37h x
4[349](4)

That mathematical formula explains how Autechre and Aphex
Twin's brains work under halogen lights and the music in
general
