the solder is more than the stick of glue in the hot glue
gun. it plays a very active role in spreading the heat
around. where you feed the solder in can actually draw the
heat in a particular direction. you also need to give it all
a moment to heat up, or it'll be sheer frustration and cold
joints. there's nothing wrong with wasting loads of solder
except that it's more annoying when you have to undo it, so
go wild. if you have an iron with a variable knob, look up
if you're setting it where you should. perhaps take a moment
to dial it in; figure out with a bit of spare board 'n' wire
what it'll take to get the hold you want, and THEN go back
to your unethically sourced PCBs.

a week ago, in a thrift shop, i hap'd upon a fishing tackle
box labeled $5.00. i opened it up, figuring it could be
worth it if it had enough high-tensile line and some wacky
lures or some shit. instead it was a complete starter
electronics kit: two irons, flux, a few kinds of solder,
hookup wire, lots of alligator clippers, and a logic probe.
i also bought a bankbox for 99c, and a lampshade for 99c
that wound up being the wrong size for my birdlamp. this is
my china.

Soldering is mostly about HEATING THE WIRES or whatever
parts to be soldered (but not too much to blow up the
component, obviously). If you just melt the solder and
connect wires, it makes a "cold joint" and is unreliable and
shit.

So the main point is to heat up the parts to be soldered
together, then heat up the solder; the solder then flows and
sticks hard to the components that were heated.

"Soldering is mostly about HEATING THE WIRES or whatever

THIS,

heat the leg poking through up first then just dab the
solder on & it should melt and pool on the circular bit

but not too much if its a particularly heat sensitive
component,
in which case you can get sockets?? long time

also make sure your in a well ventilated area, bet Chinese
solder still has loads of lead in it

yeah that.
And, don't touch the solder directly to the soldering iron,
touch it to the other side of the leg and it should be hot
enough to melt
