it can be exhausting to properly care. most people are fucking monkeys, and swear blind allegiance to some chief ape -- more football fan than rational, independent agent. take global warming, for example: obama supports pollution control, and lots of people dislike obama, therefore they are against pollution control. it's so fucking stupid; it drives me crazy: evaluate the issue on its own terms, not through a lens of crybaby emotional bullshit. it's so frustrating... most people are so intellectually impoverished that they're incapable of forming opinions independent of what the telly says. it does get tempting to say: fuck these dolts; i give up. i will take care of myself, and let them shoot themselves in the foot. fighting the good fight is very unrewarding, and you'll never get a word of thanks, just a bunch of ad hominem catcalls. you will be pulp with my tire treads on top.... and i think that is the core of fascism; a combination of frustration and selfishness. it's the wrong attitude -- we got one planet, we're all in it together etc -- but i totally understand why people feel that way. and i have to work very hard not to sink down to that level myself.... |

i guess it's like being a single mom. some days you want to just drop the kids off at a church and drive until there's a few states' worth of distance between you and your daily hassles. you don't do, though, 'cos you do care, and there will be problems wherever you go.... but there's that lingering kernel of frustration, and i think that's why people retreat into dens of racism, selfishness, and ethnic purity. it's a way of shirking responsibility for society's shared issues. |
