Nice touch with the whole gearlist listed in the cover, for
us gearfreaks

That's interesting. It confirms my hypothesis that Syro is a
compilation of fanboys' most wanted tracks.

Not heard any yet. Shite internet and no postal service
where I am, will have to wait a while!

It's a bit like Tuss though?

Not really, it's got a bit of everything APhex.

Very, very good album. I like every track now. It has to be
taken as a compilation of unreleleased we should be glad to
finally get on CD/LP. Like most of his albums in fact (SAW,
ICBYD, Caustic Window Comp). There's no coherence or
progression in it.

I dig it, sounds a bit slowed down in some parts (gives me
that "I wonder if this is supposed to be 45rpm" thought).

To me it feels like an album more than a compilation. It's
surprisingly consistent and the lack of progression is sort
of part of its charm imo....it's like a blimp floating in
the aphexsphere...

It's a 9/10 for me - I would have traded that last track for
something a bit more like 'Logon Rock Witch', cause
'aisatsana' just gives me that "aw it's already over and now
i have to listen to this really slow piano ambiance"-feel. I
feel there could have been one or two more tracks to up the
overall length of the album, but it does work for me. I
guess it's an instant classic - I already find myself
recalling different passages and even 180db (which reminds
me of weird-sounding tracks from ICBYD, that I don't find
that charming) gets me nodding.

Am I the only one that finds that drum filter envelope in 4
bit @ 3:02 utterly annoying?

I think "aisatsana [102]" serves as a good palate cleanser
so you can go listen to the whole thing again.

I just realized that I have a mix from 2006 (from an unnamed
source) which is from Richards laptop; The 180db track pops
up 7 minutes in the mix.

Yes, 180db_ is an old tune, which has been played live many
times.

"4 bit 9D" (=track 4) has also been reported being played at
ATP in 2007. That's one of the reasons why I consider this
Syro to be more a compilation than an album. Though it could
also be an OLD album, composed on 2006.

This track is amazing since 2:24 in my opinion. The
background synths starting at 3:02 are great. The drum
filter is ok for me, though I could have lived without. It
sounds like an angry duck complaining.

This track sounds a lot more like AE than AFX, imo! The
hip-hop rhythms, the vocoder, the synth line... are old
Autechre stuff.

Yeah that bonus track does sound a tad AEish. Ta for the
link.

I think it's a good album, it's great to see everyone
commenting (just that actually) on how it reveals itself
more with repeated listens. Like on first listen I thought
it sounded like a backstep from Drukqs, kind of how I felt
about Analord (but then I was that guy who wanted a whole
album of Mangle 11's). Now you hear it and it's just a more
mature sound all around. To use a horrible analogy, like
what QOTSA did with their last album, only not boring as
shit. I could've done without Produk and 180db but people
seem to like em, fair enough.

offline goDel from ɐpʎǝx (Seychelles) on 2014-09-21 18:55 [#02476574]
Points: 10225 Status: Lurker

It's a worthy follow-up to Drukqs, imo. Not as
groundbreaking perhaps. But it still sounds like a
progression. As a compilation Syro works better than Drukqs.
It builds like a DJ-set and basically has a narrative.
Drukqs felt much more like a collection of awesome tracks
thrown together.

180db_ was in my head all the afternoon. Simple but good,
catchy tune. It's like an interlude in order to separate the
four first tracks from the drum'n'bass ones.

It's crazy how everytime I listen to one of those Syro
tracks, it seems I never heard "got it" before. So many
things in every track (except 180db_ and aisatsana).

Actually a couple of times this week a different track has
popped into my head, out of nowhere; It started after the
third listen and was quite an odd experience, it was quite
vivid and the melodies are so crafty in their insidiousness
that it was like the ginger ninja walked into my kitchen and
started humming his own song in my ear.

I love sticking it on when I'm stoned and unwrapping new
details.. someone needs to make a meme of Jon Stewart in
Half Baked. "You ever listened to Syro...on WEED?"

Of course I loved Chinese Democracy for about a week. Time
will tell.

It happened to me as well, with bits of tracks 1 (Minipops),
3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 coming to my head and making me think:
"now that's a lush part".

I suppose it must happen with every album put on repeat
though.

I've got a sticker and a card, maybe it is just a souvenir,
from the wording on it it's like you've pre-ordered the
album and you take the card to the shop to pick it up. Maybe
that's all it is, odd thing thing to include but, hey, it's
