i have already collected this pokemon (esp. appropriate
analogy for detrimentalist).

in before someone says "but afx sounds better when you slow
it down." that hasn't been true for the last five years at
least.

i think shock one has a lot of potential. here's the one
everyone knows already. his shit is a lot less dense,
though, more just straight-up D&B... but there are moments

It's not my favourite Aphex release but this thread has kind
of reminded me that Drukqs really has it's own sound.

thought that was called cum on the eggs for a second.

some nice stuff in there, but I think RussellDust is right,
it's pretty hard to match Aphex's sound, and that release
only very vaguely reminds me of drukqs

that album is a must have, imo, but be aware that the rest
of the tunes are nothing like this one...

yeah, it was more of a Tuss EP, but it dips a toe in the
water through the drum programming.

a "sound" is nothing but a collection of preferred
strategies and tricks and hardware and software ricocheting
off of mood and personality. unless you spend ages tallying
up the minutiae, i think we're stuck at "yeah, this sounds
like it could be off drukqs."

despite the massive potential for disagreement, there, i
think most of us would actually agree on what's drukqs-y and
what's not. funny that

No heart or soul in Venetian Snares! Whatsoever. Chopping up
audio of your wife felching a horse's ringpiece and putting
it over an Amen in 11/4 isn't the most genial musicianship
to mine ears at least

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2014-01-29 04:33 [#02466584]

you've really disappointed me, i must say.

1) On 11/4: He's said in interviews that he very much enjoys
listening to 4/4; he has no problem with it, but he just
can't seem to enjoy writing it. As such, I do not view the
time signatures as a gimmick. Asking snares why he does 11/4
is like asking why a dog walks on four legs. That's just the
way god made 'em, mang.

2) Felching a horse's ringpiece: After seeing some video of
him threatening to "injure a frenchman" I felt he was
absolutely genuine but also immensely immature, child-like
even. However, he is a musician whose records I buy, not my
room-mate, so I don't give a fuck if the samples fell out of
a horse's anus, I just care if the record is good or not.
Nymphomatriach was not terribly good, no argument there.
However, it's just one of a zillion, and many ARE good.

3) On soul: Blink and you'll miss it, but it's there. Since
we're all up on Detrimentalist, take Eurocore MVP: Amongst
all the manic energy, there are blasts of deeply moody
chording. Then the fact that it's easy to ignore his slow
tracks, since the fast ones are so flashy: Last two trax on
the album get much more directly moody.

I need to listen to Huge Chrome Cylinder Fing again, recall
that being pretty moody. Liked it but I was busy then and
never got back for more than one or two repeat listens for
some reason

It's all technique and attitude, much like Squarepusher,
without that special somethin'. Granted there's more heart
in Squarepusher's stuff, particularly early on, but he too
lacks that spark of creativity that screams out loud in so
many other artists work

i never went for piss, fart, and dick jokes myself. i prefer
absurdist, monty-python, dada, RA Wilson, discordianism,
whatever, obviously. sometimes i can genuinely contribute to
a watmm-style thread about poop, but most days i leave that
to the professionals

ever, release an album again

A friend from planet Ebubu noticed that you only ever speak
to an audience, never to someone in particular. I'm starting
to see it now.

pretty much. i'd stay home and talk to myself, but i need
occasional noise from external creatures in order to jostle
me out of local maximums before can reach even greater
heights of being-up-my-own-butt-ness. in the industry, we
call this process simulated analing.

Aye. I would have been pretty surprised if you found
somethin so thin as that funny since we have a largely
similar taste in comedy.

Thread needs more R3FL3X, then it would SignedUpToLoL
worthy

anyway I met snares once and he's a nice chap, nothing like
what people seem to think based on his musical/artistic
personality if that even exists!

Plus I do enjoy a handfull of his tracks, but live he's even
better.
