hello xlt,
as an american, what should i go with when seeking out a cheapo stereo receiver and speakers? i'm looking to wire up multiple rooms of a house for sound, cheaply. do not care about digital or massive wattage; just want a receiver and speakers in three or four spots.
there's the old standby of scoring some 80s wood-paneled japanese nonsense from salvation army, but there's also a new wave of exceedingly cheap receivers on the 'net. why spend ten hours replacing caps and cleaning scratchy pots when you could just get new ones for another $30ea?
how about for speakers? i can spot a good receiver in the rummage shop, but i have a harder time calling speakers in advance....

like, i got a denon avr-5600. it's a beast. inside is what appears to be a giant flux capacitor. yet, one channel flakes out. from hearing some relay ca-clunks it's either one of them jobs sticking, or something in that channel is overloading or flaking, causing it to cut the juice. suspect the latter. meanwhile, it's like 50 lbs, and i'd kind of like to take it apart to find out what's inside the mysterious silo in the middle.

Fuck America what good is that to me? What about a cheapo hifi in modern Canada yo
The Value Village near me sells some sweet-looking 80s hifis, you never know if they will actually work though

exactly why i specified america: ain't no value village here. in fact, why are you talking up canada? i specifically specified america so i wouldn't get a bunch of brits telling me to go to sainsbury and buy a pint of skeuomorph.... not that i'm not down with sainsbury shoppes; they're just in england, and i'm not.
furthermore, salvation armpamyfilovars are often miserable affairs coated in mold, cat shit, and the hate excreted by unloved solid-state electronics. i'm getting past that romantic, living-on-used-happy-meal-cartons phase and into the stage of life where i can afford to spend $100 on a MADE IN BADSOLDERISTAN jobbie new: no scratchy knobs. no mildew. no fire hazard. no dodgy left channel. live the high live for five years, before it fails catastrophically and becomes useless

that looks nice, but not really what i want... i'm looking for a receiver, not a stereo. don't need no ipad dock nor CD player.
want a stereo component widget i can set up a few times and then use to stream music from my house's computer core. fidelity is not a huge concern, this is essentially just so i can keep the tunes going no matter what i'm doing.
