. in america, . one or both of the google founders went to one. i think it really depends on the execution. if you just let the kids do whatever they want, 2/3 of them will just want to goof off the whole time. you need someone cracking the whip on some level -- the teacher, mom, whatever -- or the kids are going to grow up unable to muster the willpower to stick to anything for more than a day. |

i think parents matter much more than schools. if the parents don't give a shit and prefer drinking over parenting, it'd take a really amazing school and lots of luck for the kid to not be at least a little fucked up. if the parents and the school are both great, the kid stands a great chance of becoming a great adult. the reality is typically somewhere in the middle -- the parents care but are too drained from paying the bills to really involve themselves in their child's education. the school means well, but has lots of kids and few resources, along with continuous government pressure to juke the stats and cut costs, since that makes whoever's elected look good. bottom line is, you pretty much have to go to college to get an education beyond "i can count teh numbers." student loans are bastardly ball-and-chains that milk people for years, making them miserable and delaying them from starting a proper life. while the public grammar/elementary/primary/etc schools have issues, i think it'd be better to focus on solving this one first. |
