What a world we live in, so much dread and destruction inna a Babylon, and it’s not hard to imagine it all going to complete shits pretty soon. Some years ago, a few close friends and I had laid out plans for buying our own island, to retreat from society and start a new page for ourselves, and future generations. Unfortunately these plans have faded over time, due to our negligence, corporate enslavement, and fears that I would turn it into some sort of cult (which is still big on my list). So today, exclusively to xlt and you BD techno warriors, I propose a . Let’s discuss the sort of things you’d consider, if you were actively going to participate in this. Where would you locate? What would you call it? Who’d be in/excluded? What are some of the rules/laws you’d set in place? Would you consider investing in defense? The most crucial are your needs and luxuries, but how would you go about sustaining them? I’d like to spur discussion about this cause honestly, I don’t see it being farfetched, and it’s definitely an idea I enjoy flirting with occasionally. |

Name: Pistachio Island Location: (What is currently) Sully Island. It's £95,000 to buy it and it's near my house anyway, so I can go home when people inevitably start acting like dicks and mess it up/tsunami strikes/people start getting dysentery because they're poorly disciplined. Also, when the tide is out, you can walk to the mainland (and there's a pub there). Law/Political Model: Objectivist democracy. Military: Swiss model; armed populace, neutrality in international affairs. Immigration Test: A single, simple question, agreed by vote of the existing residents, "Would your presence here make our lives better?" Needs: Shelter would be Kifaru Tipis with stoves. Firewood would be collected from the mainland. Food would be predominantly fish and vegetables. We would be largely self supporting. Additional funds needed (to buy sporadic supplies from the mainland) would be raised by selling novelty "Pistachio Island Dollars" on ebay for 100 times what it costs to make them (a bit like Sealand does). Out of interest, have you studied Micronations at any great length? I love the idea. The main problems I see are: 1) Getting the 'arbiter' of disputes (or 'leader') to be neutral/just/disinterested in such a small community. 2) Getting "the right sort of people" to participate and only "the right sort of people". 3) Getting the rest of the world to **** off and leave you alone (IE not imposing "their" fishing rights and laws on "your" territory, without an army to back you up. 4) Having the balls to deal with your internal issues/disputes/disasters yourselves, without "running home to mummy" when it goes wrong (see the mirconation ship, Freedom). |

I have a nation in my room, and it's going aiiight. GDP, ok. Output to make the world better, ok. Freedom, 100%. Protected by ninja power. But apparently the whole nation spends its time wanking and sleeping, so maybe something needs to be done about that. I'm thinking about building an amusement park or opening a shopping mall to boost the joy and economy. It's great cuz everything I sell takes money from one pocket and puts it into the other, so in that sense, I have unlimited buying power and nearly limitless producing power (energy permitting). Sort of has a litter problem currently, which I gotta fix. |
