any suggestions for which operating system i could go for?
its a midrange pc with intel core i5 processor - 8GB memory
no os installed. i need to avoid compatability issues and it
might be best to just go with windows 7. id like to try and
get away from windows.

Windows 7 would be perfect on that, I figure. Are you
interested in Linux? Do you know it, and know how to fuck
with drivers, and know what software is available? If not,
stick with Windows.

I will say thought that I have Ubuntu Studio on an old
laptop and it works pretty great. I mostly use it for
showing videos to my kid and farting around with Pure Data.

if you're on newer hardware, 7 will be better. especially if
you have an SSD, which XP doesn't always play along with.

only reason to use XP is if you have legacy
software/hardware/whatever you're not willing to part with.

8 still has driver issues with hardware win7 supports, plus
the ghastly start screen. avoid.

fleetmouse seems to have lunix covered.

use linux for the internets . ubuntu.

dual boot with windows

you can still run many windows programs on ubuntu through a
program called 'wine'

using wine is like trying to pass a lawn chair through your
urethra

there is plenty of native software for linux, use it or use
windows if you want windows softs.

I agree with dual boot tho... a small linux partition is fun
on the side

Well Linux Mint is pretty nice. It has windows
compatibility, even for the drivers. But you can always just
test-run it on USB first to see if it fits your needs.

nice analogy owch. lol.

I should mention that I use win7 for everything, but a
recent install of Mint on a slow computer was quite
successful. It's not that I run Linux myself at the moment,
though building a small music-maker with software like
Audacity and Reaper, has struck my mind more than once.

yeah or a live cd. but it does make the things appear slow
on a live cd.
great to test compatibility before instal.

i think doing things thru wine will be tricky. how well does
wine work? i tried to run some things on mac with it and it
can only run certain programs. also i bet i'd have issues
with editing software for example. i could get win7 iso from
digital river but i havnt looked for a license/key (bet
that's not going to be easy)

thing is im poor dudes which is why i went without the os
(rather than getting worse hardware with os included) also
windows 8 is indeed a terrible thing. i also have no monitor
so i have to use an old lcd. im trying out sensible decision
making instead of getting drunk.

why cd? you can always do it on USB instead with
UNetbootin

oh cool, just cd seemed easier at the time..

so with this you can take your own OS around with you on a
stick and run it on other peoples PCs , surf the net with
your own firefox with bookmarks and all that stuff?

and have their lan infect it with viruses at no added cost

offline freqy on 2013-04-18 18:09 [#02454300]

Linux is not as prone to viruses like windows.

why would their (whoever they are) lan be any more
detrimental to an OS than another?

Yes and no. It's like a live-cd, so you can run the OS from
the USB, but also choose to install. BUT there is some
distros out there that does what you talk about, where you
have your own OS.

cool junktion. tnx.

thumbs up for dual boot too.
install windows first then linux after, usually makes things
easier.

don't be daft. yes, windows is swiss cheese compared to
linux. but it has security holes, too, and you have to keep
it patched. how likely are most people to keep a USB stick
patched if they just use it at the library sometimes? and
the places people are likely to boot off a USB stick are
often risky places in public labs where people have
installed malware.

offline freqy on 2013-04-18 20:55 [#02454306]

so the people that made it possible to run the os from a usb
stick and the thousands of people that do so are all daft
because you cant see where people can use the os stick
safely.

And you with your silly PC running low fsb because you cant
be bothered to raise it for fear of melting your silly cpu
is correct and we should all bow down to you epicmegatrax.

it's times like this that freqy is most dupeish. that was a
pretty blatant troll

offline listen2meTalk on 2013-04-18 21:21 [#02454314]

I didn't consider that dupish, really. He just doesn't
agree with the notion that you know everything. I'm afraid
I'm with him in that regard.

Honestly OP should just get a chromebook and be done with
it. It'll suit all your needs.

i could go with linux actually if i feel theres enough good
software. gimp and blender would be enough for me to get on
with for now but i'd be really convinced if there was any
good editing software.

7

i upgraded my laptop to 8 gig and now i can run many servers
at once in vmware. that's probably of no practical use for
regular home users and i just wanted to brag

oh right. it would be interesting to see whether my external
sound card, that apparently only works decently on 32 bit
machines, would run in a 32 bit virtual machine, through my
64 bit laptop. maybe someone can just answer that for me. i
don't know how to google.
