i think the pros use one instance of winamp and on iTunes

always reencode your mp3 to wav files

use cool effects like echo and fasers

Play one song at once and don't try to "mix" two together,
as the latest fad goes. Real music only - no hip hop or
dance.

you will find that most music is either too fast or too
slow. pick one and stick with it!

I realise this is a joke, but just in case anyone is after
serious answer:

I didn't know this at the time but buying two copies of a
couple of your favourite records (ones you don't mind
hearing a lot) and mixing them together is really good way
to start.
Set both to quartz lock and the speed match is done for
you.
Then just a matter of beat counting and sync them up.

Once you are good at counting 4 bars and syncing you can try
mixing some other records where you will have to match the
speed too.

Also get a few similar BPM songs to start with.
When I started my record collection was so eclectic mixing
was more or less impossible!
