Drukqs/Analord

12 and 8 years respectively on from the last two major
overt Aphex releases, do you have a personal preference
between the two?

analord is good background music -- working, coding, surfing
the web, doing a puzzle, whatever.

drukqs is good foreground music. it is superior to analord.
but i only pull it out in certain moods, so i guess it boils
down to whether your asking which i think is better (drukqs)
or which i listen to more often (analord).

Drukqs is definitely my personal favourite, though Analord
is not too far off it. I'd say there's loads of Analord
foreground tracks... W32.Mydoom.AU@mm, Pitcard, Reunion 2,
Grumpy Acid, XMD 5a, Afx Acid 04.... a good third of 'em at
least.

I'd say the first time XMD 5a ripped me a new anus is one of
the best moments of my life. I'd heard it 4 or 5 times and
thought it was lovely, but that time took it to a whole
different level. I just had a paragraph written on about 20
different parts of that song and scrapped it. Y'all fuckin
know

druqks blew my mind.

analord kinda bores me. but i still dig the saws.

Listen to Fenix Funk 5.
Rinse.
Repeat.

If any, that one should get the sound firmly in your ears
and open up the rest of them beyond nice analog voyages

fenix funk five just screams for a little more pattern
variation. it has approximately two moments of awesomeness
and associated buildup suspense; the rest is just waiting
for those moments in distracted boredom. the sk1 noise is a
charming touch.

im more for the complexity and dramatism of drukqs,
but yet some nice tracks on the analords, and great overall
vinyl concept...

also 5 years (?) since the tuss, that is equally amazing and
continued analords somehow where fenix funk left it...

i pretty much agree with epic on that one, it ekes really
close to that brilliance but doesn't quite get there.

steinvord is the only thing that's gotten that same feeling
for me.

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2013-03-12 20:46 [#02451456]
Points: 25264 Status: Regular

it's the use of chopped drum breaks melting into the acid
that ties fenix funk / xmd5a to the tuss for me. the piano
in rushup i bank 12 is a close sibling of the piano in xmd5a

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2013-03-12 20:47 [#02451457]
Points: 25264 Status: Regular

yeah, steinvord is a fest for starving men. i find the mix
on it somewhat disappointing compared to drukqs and analord,
though. have to turn it up louder than is comfortable for
proper enjoyment.

*feast

and drukqs still kicks the pants off of steinvord, even
though it was nice to finally get more of.... that shit.

Where's the SK1 in that track?

The Tuss in general sounds a lot less "sincere" and heavy to
me than the others, though I still love it in its own right.
There are still a few moments on the two releases where feel
like the focused touch is still there e.g. the weird, brief
little ambience that comes in at 1:55 in Last Rushup 10

I really don't think Steinvord is RDJ. It's too close to
older stuff to be him in my books. Still, I love that cunt
to bits whoever it is. 0:32 - 1:15 in this
Ziggomatic tribute is probably my favourite Steinvord.

oh, someone on watmm pointed it out in 2006, back when watmm
was good. i think it was the "flute" preset. i remember not
believing it at first, then pulling out my sk1 and going,
"huh, so it is" but the rest of the detail has left me.
can't find any good youtube demos and my sk1 is in a closet.
never had the patience for it crashing 75% of the time when
i recorded a sample.

but i re-iterate: tuss feels like some laptop creeping into
the acid, particularly with chopped, sampled drum breaks....
but it's still acid, at its core loyalty.

if you're going for the acid sound, all the old synths are
still king in the post-VST world, but you can use samplers
for most of the drum noises. you can sample the synths too
if you do it in 8bars etc. instead of single hits. maybe
that's the difference -- one's machines, one's machines with
laptop enhancement after.

just a theory, really. for all i know, analord is 100%
vst.... very good sounding vst....

RDJ's biggest hoodwink yet: making thousands of fanboys
worldwide shell out on shitty, redundant 70s and 80s synth
hardware in their vain attempts at emulating his past few
casually thrown together releases

that vid is a fucking mess. i've waffled madly and it's
spent about 2/3 of its time on youtube as unlisted. vastly
recommend STEWKEY for the analog smell and
honey, i melted the party for sampled nonsense

RDJ got sloppy seconds. the first synth i bought was a
Prophet VS, and i bought it because trent reznor was gushing
about it. i overpaid for it, but i have zero regrets because
it's still one of the best synths i've ever heard.

I think it's pretty likely that at some point, Aphex is what
you'll be hearing when you walk around the hover-mall to get
your groceries. Corporate music output won't last forever.
Regimes always crash, mayne.

I guarantee there'll be a Renaissance II. Perhaps including
cameos from animatronic Danny DeVito(R2D2) and Whoopi
Goldberg(C3PO), perhaps not, but it'll still be pretty sweet
for the folks whose lifetime it falls in.

In the meanwhile, we tuned into to what the fuck has
taken place in the past 50 years of music
get the
pleasure of the relatively unknown spoils

My utopian vision is walking into a coffee shop, maybe a
little stoned, naked but for some comfortable hiking sandals
and a bumbag, then sitting down and paying a fair price for
a fairly attained, good quality cappuccino and looking
around at people who aren't afraid of people and themselves.
Parhelic Triangle is playing on the sound system, and as I
cross my legs my scrotum bulges pinkly from the back of my
thigh. Is this too much to ask?

Yes

Aphex lives in a bank. Coincidence?

-----

Also, 5 teenage kids on an income of £18K. Guess what,
you're going to have money troubles if you buy them all
mobile phones. Stop blaming the banks for this. Perhaps if
you'd 'invested' £10 in rubbers 15 years ago, you might not
be in this state now?

And Trowbridge? I used to work there; it's really
expensive. It would have been very convenient for me to live
there. £15K income? Live 30 miles out and commute in. Think
that's an unreasonable expectation? I used to regularly
commute 75 miles (each way) in. It was cheaper than living
there.

Yes, the banks shouldn't have loaned them this money. Yes,
the government shouldn't have allowed a structure that
permitted (never mind encouraged) this to happen.
Claiming that these people were not without a hand in their
own undoing is insanity though.
