Huh, first time I'm hearing about this. The concept could have been amazing if anyone could have come to the keyboard (or whatever) and played the orchestra for a bit. As it is it seems kind of a vanity thing that's only fun for the one playing the orchestra.

they did some poll in england: "what's the greatest book in the english language?" in a stroke of genius, they polled academics separately from the general population.
genpop said "lord of the rings" and the professors said "ulysses by james joyce"
i can't tell who is right.

This guy got it, http://www.skirmishblog.net/2012/10/aphex-twin-remote-orche stra-barbican.html
remote part was dense and really unique, was not for the Avril 14th fans, there were some amazin chords in there.

the quietus doesn't like the first piece, but treats the second two generously (though the facebook comments at the bottom of the page call it "utter, self indulgent dross.")
the line of best fit thought it was "a genuinely unique experience" just like the pamphlet promised.
fact mag is less kind, referring to "held chords and droning strings for 45 minutes, creating an ominous mood but not really doing much other than getting louder and quieter." but tempering this opinion by calling the piano very simple, but brilliant."
clash music called it "a mixed bag from Aphex"
there are a goddamn arseload of reviews! was the audience entirely journalists or what?
once i had the idea to swing a piano from ropes when i was really high, but i'm not a famous millionaire and no one would help me move my piano unless i provided beer and i already drank all the beer

so did he figure out the piano rigging himself, or just hire someone? how many stagehands did it take to build the disco ball rig? how many ganked max/msp patches were there? when it comes to performance art, i have loads more respect for someone like chris cunningham that actually designs his own robots. take a look at jaqapparatus, it makes this remote orchestra thing look like a load of weak piss.
ideas are cheap; i have thousands. the real cost is in executing them, and i don't think rdj expended terribly much effort putting this together.
at least now we've got clark to write IDM piano for us without making us sit through 45 minutes of orchestra wank first.

The idea was sound but the execution just didn't work. The lasers visual was fucking ace but the noise track was shit, like a lot of noise tracks.
I didn't go in expecting Drukqs or I Care Because You Do. I went in expecting something exciting and different. I got droning strings of varying pitch and volume for the best part of an hour, a 5 minute piano piece, which was cool, and a laser show that nearly blinded me.
I love my Aphex music but there's not been a proper new album since 2001. You could see Analord as an album but that was a compilation of singles in my opinion.
I know he's not the most reliable source for information about himself but he repeatedly mentioned that he has unreleased music. What's wrong with releasing that? If he doesn't want to gouge the fans for money then do it on the "pay what you want" model.

I was near front almost in middle, got lazered in eye few times.
Orchestra, totally dense, thick massive chords, never heard anything ike it before, I got uber nice recording, will upload soon.
It was not all dissonant, it kept changing between what sounded like pentatonic to mirotonal...really trippy! + there was a beautiful choir only part...that kinda came outta nowhere.
I stalked around in rehearsals b4gig, they were playing totally different rhythmic Reichy type phase things, (got bit recorded)
Spoke to sam from Icrus (awesome guy), apparently they had software issues for the gig and could not use that stuff!
, he said they just patched what Rich told them to write+added a couple more touches, he also said rich had another guy doing another patch but it went wrong.
The pendulum part was totally spatialized(amazing) , not going thru p.a
Piano was really something , i could hear the lezlie, doppler effect, UN FUCKING believable, you could hear like all the notes catching up with each other as it swung, mega nice effect+ mechanical noises were like being on a boat at sea or something.
Got into argument with twat at end, who was pissed it was all ambient.
There were aphex logo medallions being sold, looked pretty cheapo.

my music? it's alright.
it'd be more than alright if i focused on music exclusively, but i'm too high-velocity. what i do is i make things, and music is just one thing of many. there's the album art, the music videos, the web site, the netlabel i run for fun... outside of music, i also do plenty of writing, photography, coding, and collages with cardboard and hot glue (good, alright, good, and shit, before you ask). i work very hard and i'm sharper+more clever than most of the idiots i argue with on the internet (hello!). my balls are certainly large enough that i should be permitted to criticize his gingerness.... that's really what you meant, ya?
