hi nac, how are you?
i know noshit about turntables, but i found a decently cheap on thomann(.es) by american audio = audiotechnia that seems to be a pretty decent company and it looks like a copy of a technics...
i was thinking about buying it myself, it looks great if you have low djing pretentions...

a rega or pro-ject turntable with a decent cartridge is the way to go. avoid those cheapo usb decks at all cost!
they do cheap -> expensive decks, so it should be no problem finding one to match your friend's budget
pro-ject
rega

Bloody hell, the Tech12s have been discontinued?! I never thought I'd live to see the day...
*quick Google*
Ah, you can still get the updated digital ones. See here.
I personally was never very impressed by the Tech12s as 'listening' turntables, but admittedly, my experiments with them involved ones which had lived in clubs and/or been (scratch) DJed on, so perhaps it was unfair.
I haven't looked at it in a few years, but I recall people raving about these. I've no idea if they're available more cheaply elsewhere, but these used to be available for £99 and were supposed to be better than far pricier decks for sound quality.
Out of interest, how 'hi-fi' is the setup this will be used in?
The sound quality I get out of a thrift store £10 set of speakers, £20 T-AMP (I got one before they started getting sold in pimped up form) and a Vestax PDX-2000 turntable (that has been gigged and scratch DJed for >1500hrs on) has to be heard to be believed.

I believe Panasonic has indeed stopped production on all technics decks including the mk5G (try finding them for sale new anywhere - sad)
As an owner of some 1210s I would say get them as they are absolutely bomb proof and look/feel a million times better than those belt drive rega style units.
I'd be perfectly happy with the 1210 for listening purposes. Maybe I have cloth ears though.
It probably doesn't conform to your requirement for cheap, but factor in the build quality and it will outlive you. Therefore cheap if you consider how many years it will keep going for.

Wow, if they've all stopped I would advocate hunting down some boxed new ones somewhere and chucking them in the loft. Mark my words, they will be worth big money 30 years from now (if society hasn't fallen).
As much as I am a Vestax man, I must concede, I agree with Dave. Buy Tech12s second hand, use for as long as you need and then sell them when you're done and you'll get 90% of your cash back. If you buy some crap unit for $100 a piece, you'll only be able to sell it for 20% what you paid for it.
