What/Why Makes you choose to listen to the music you listen too? Are you an avid collector? Do you feel the need to collect all of an artists Albums even if you don't like the content of all of them? Do you purchase music of a particular music because you are part of a scene/tribe e.g. Your a punk/raver/junglist Do you choose music because friends or the radio or net Influence you? Are you a bargain bin chancer just randomly choosing albums? Are you a downloading freeloader never purchasing anything ever? Perhaps you are a musical snob only listening to underground obscure music because you think it's better than other genres? I really want to know if you know why you are listening to what you are listening too? I'm wondering if there is perhaps some deeply psychiatric reason we make these choices? Is musical obsession a form of addiction? Did we catch our habit from somebody else? Are we aware that most music is created in order to satisfy our tastes? GO ARGUE DEBATE THINK! Cheers guys/gals |

Do you feel the need to collect > all of an artists > Albums even if you don't like the content of all of them? no. my obsessions lead me to try and dig into the works deeper for further comprehension (and then onto related acts), not to collect token physical objects. > Do you purchase music of a particular music because you are > part of a scene/tribe e.g. Your a punk/raver/junglist yes, but only because i audition a lot more stuff in that particular scene any given week. there's no loyalty, just more opportunity/attention span. > Do you choose music because friends or the radio or net > Influence you? all of the above. mostly the net. i tend to pick at the edges of my personal music graph and gradually expand. > Are you a bargain bin chancer just randomly choosing > albums? well, i love getting lost in a used records store, but i don't wind up bothering too often.... but if you mean treating the internet as a giant bargain bin, then absolutely. it gets a bit more painstaking when you're in a store and have to pay for it and stuff, and worry about whether your CD rack has room. > Are you a downloading freeloader never purchasing anything > ever? while i'm certainly one of those chaps that makes the RIAA bitch and moan because i don't buy $20 CDs with one good track on 'em, if something's good i usually buy it. in general, i dislike buying CDs, as i just rip 'em and then listen to an mp3. vinyl is nicer to buy, because any time i fire up the turntable i tend to be more serious and in the mood (otherwise i just go with the lazier, easier mp3) and it's a proper experience |

"I JUST MAKE MUSIC FOR MYSELF I AM PURE AND PERFECT." my sense is that it's a form of communication, and you'd have to be a bit messed up to passionately write messages to no one. |

When reading comics, I like to listen to some more chilled out stuff, like Christ., Mrs. Jynx, or Kettel or something. If I'm playing GTA, then probably Gojira or Datachi or something like that. I purchase something after I can truly appreciate what the artist is trying to communicate, (If I like the album, I buy it, vinyl if available). Obsession is not about what you like, but the WAY in which you like them. The longer you have been doing something you enjoy, the more you can appreciate it. So yes, I believe the music we listen to can be an obsession, and therefore an addiction. Even if that taste is only applicable to the creator of the music, though I have to say that's an odd way of approaching music. Music is a language, and you can be fluent in that language as long as it's one that speaks to you. People can hear an electronic track and "not get it" simply because it's not the sound that resonates with them. It's not music that applies to their particular taste. |

Usually one of two reasons: I enjoy it as a thing in itself, or it enhances a particular mood I am already feeling and makes me 'feel' more deeply. Are you an avid collector? I used to collect a lot more. Now I tend to just get tracks I like and make my own playlists. There is still a bit of collector in me; the last couple of BoC releases have been pretty weak IMO, yet I bought them because it was BoC. If they'd been by Tycho, I wouldn't have. Do you choose music because friends or the radio or net Influence you? They might expose me to new music I might otherwise not hear, but they wouldn't influence whether or not I liked it. No. Last three releases I bought were Glass Teeth - Flesh Palace (very obscure), Ok Computer (popular, but indie enough to be cool), Timbaland - Shock Value (pop as hell). Are we aware that most music is created in order to satisfy our tastes? Most of the artists I like are in it for the "right reasons". I don't think many people would accuse V/vm, Mala or AFX of cynically making music to satisfy the market. I am aware that this isn't the case for most music most people listen to. |

i think it's about being into certain things that others are into, but still having something different to add. AFX, for example, comes out of a lot of other acts (drexciya, kraftwerk, john cage, etc.) while being clearly distinct from all of them. the idea that any artist is devoid of influences is insane. we all grew up with music, and whatever we've heard comes back out when we write more music, along with a bit of our own personal pizazz piled on top. |

I'd never pay for DRM-enabled music. I'd rather not listen to it than tolerate the nonsense of not being able to burn a CD of an MP3 I've earnt for the car, or copy it to my phone. One of the advantages of liking 'alternative' music is that it tends to be the big, populist labels that pushes that kind of shit. To quote Warp, the good guys, "...prefer not to assume our customers are thieves." The idea of paying for something intangible like an mp3 (rather than physical media, containing the same intangible data) stills seems strange to me, but I'll do it in order to get the artist some money. I'd much rather cut the whole industry out of the nonsense and send the musician what I think is a fair price. There are some artists/labels I do that with. I understand that this model requires a customer base with some sort of scruples and probably isn't viable with the current youth (who, as ever, make up the record-buying majority) being so used to just getting music without paying for it. |

I don't know I hear something I like and then I get interested into the artist and maybe purchase an album or two, sometimes I see an incredible music video and want to know more about the artist and stuff, like for Die Antwoord or recently Otto von Schirach. Cheers peeps these are all valid comments. Literaly as I pulled a cd off of the shelf I bought years ago "Plone" to be precise... It made me think Christ things have changed..... Gone are the days of chance happenings with previews and all of the opportunities to grab music from everywhere...... Why do we choose what we choose.... Obviously personal taste, but what governs that? Is there something in all of our minds that premaps our tastes our acceptances of sounds even our distastes? |

1) Because i like it. 2) Stopped 'collecting' 4-5 years ago. I stil buy records. I've just stopped trying to keep up. 3) Last time i thought i was part of a scene was early nineties. I used to listen mostly to hip hop and my favourite hobby was graffiti. I would still also listen to music dubed 'uncool' at times but i didn't want it to change my status of being well hard. 4) Not one bit. Though i will listen to a mate once in a while. Most of the people i know in my town don't like what i listen to. Some treat it as like being at the zoo. They are curious but won't be going back soon. 5)Ive rarely randomly bought a record by a completely unknown artist i've never read, heard or been told about. Money being an issue and maybe the fact it's silly. What would be the criteria, how the cover looks, the sound of the name?) 6) At times but i don't condone it. Though great to find out of print stuff and maybe preview the odd album. I download a lot of american TV series mind you! 7) Nope. And no one is going to say yes the way you put it. 8) I'm now on heroin because of cigarettes. 9) No. It's about deciphering patters isn't it? Spotting them and your brain rewarding you.
