Hi xltronic people.

So my crusty old Akai MPD24 is starting to die and I think
it's time to replace it. What are you using to control your
DAWS? I'm not interested in keyboards or pads, this will be
used for sample manipulation in Max/MSP so buttons, dials
and faders are what I want. It needs to be able to fit in a
decent sized rucksack.

What do you like about what you use? What do you dislike? Is
there anything you haven't tried but want to?

Thanks for your time chaps. Much love.

Should point out that I was interested in some of the
novation stuff but it all looks a bit purpose built for
ableton. Something That is just a big grid with loads of
buttons and some faders and dials. Preferrably with
programmable visual feedback. I know there is something like
this out there.

sounds like something from livid instruments is what you're
after!

they've got the prebuilt ohm64, which has an 8x8
monom-like programmable grid, 8 faders, 8 knobs, and 10 more
buttons plus a crossfader.

they've also got a new diy line where you can mix and
match components to your heart's content! i've been drooling
over a setup like this for a while, but am quite pleased
with my mpd26 (w/ big fat pads from mpdstuff.com)+launchpad
combo currently.

oh man, the ohmrgb looks damn sexy too. i just wish
they had more robust looking faders - imo that's prolly the
best part about the mpds, is those faders are fucking rock
solid and you can really tweak with them.

Oh god the Livid stuff is beaut but a bit out of my price
range.

well then, from what i understand, you can still program the
novation launchpad for use with other programs, it's a great
little controller, super light and versatile. i've got it
programmed so i can play full songs on it, triggering
different sounds, patterns, and instrument types as i go.

maybe a combo of that and the behringer bcf2000 might
be up your alley.

id think you could find that for ~$125-150 used, launchpads
are like ~$100

i own the bcf2000 and it is a great piece of gear. had a
bcr2000 before which was also dope.

together with bcmanager and the bc2000 yahoo group you can
do a lot of stuff with it, send multiple messages, sysex
strings. it is a lot of fun just trying out new stuff.

the bcf2000 has also a native mackie emulation mode in its'
latest firmware which is cool to use for any daw, although
the mapping is not 100% accurate at times.

the only gripe with this box is that it has no touch
sensitive faders so it's pretty useless for
recording/editing automation as you will fight horribly with
the faders.

if you really need some advertisement just watch some of the
latest performances of tim exile on youtube where he uses 2
bcr2000 and a bcf2000 very intesively.

my next purchase will be apc20 or launchpad again not
because the controller itself but their community. the
launchpad has dozens of apps in max for live, can be used
with every monome application due to an emulator. also with
investing some time into remote scripting in ableton you can
really awesome stuff. i really recommend this page. the
apc20 looks a bit worse for me as i have pretty much no use
for these cue/record/arm buttons, and i have faders on my
bcf2000.

one interesting option is this new quneo but before
i'll see any review i won't waste my time on it.

besides these ? build your own.

there is either ucapps or livid hardware builder or you can
also make midi with an arduino.

i am a long time user of the ucapps system which requires
soldering skills but the system has an incredible potential
and has a helpful community. although at the beginning it
might get a bit intimidating.

the livid builder is much more expensive but you have
prebuild elements which are easier to handle.

arduino is kewl for using it toghether with different
sensors like light detectors, piezos and else. learning to
program it is super easy.

I looked at that quneo just before making the thread. It
looks nice but yeah, I'd rather let other people take the
plunge first. I've been toying with making my own for a
while, I've got an arduino just lying around so I think I
will. That livid modular gear looks great. Might price up a
kit with what I want right now!

i can really recommend teh ucapps system as long as you will
use the stock software. it is much cheaper than the livid
one and if you feel adventurous, you can reprogram the whole
thing from ground up.

you can hel yourself out by ordering stuff from
smashtv so you don't have to search for a company
etching your pcb's or search for the pic's. at that price
these are a steal really.

as long as you just want pots/encoders/buttons this will be
a breeze. i guess the most difficult thing (at least for me
it was) is to make the front panel. depends if you want to
uset panel mounted elements or more sophisticated layering.
again - the ucapps forum provides a lot of examples and will
anwswer your questions.

i would even mix&match the ucapps system with the livid
omniboards as these are have a pretty reasonable price imho.
