«Experimental electronic» musiciens too often end up with bell-like sounds in their compositions. Fucking tubular bells. Fucking short sines with long reverbs and high pitch on top. Fucking gamelans. Fucking synth marimbas. Fucking hang drums.
Plaid are among these sinners. Tapage. Now playing: a randomly found album Cagey House — June Through The Window. Lots of fucking bells in there.
Look, there are folks who do not stuff bells in their music and it is still exceptionally original and interesting.
Trust me: stuffing bells in your IDM is not cool. Obviously. Bells do not fit in the very concept of IDM.
Drum'n'bells. Fuck it. Better than dubstep, but still gets deleted way before the final notes have aired.
Placing a NO GMO-like sticker on releases seems not a bad idea. No drum'n'bells. No dubstep. Hooray! No shit for my ears! Definitely a buy then.
Loong time no post.

But is it really too often though. I never heard many bells, apart from Plaid. Do you have some Autechre bells in store, for example? There probably are examples, but whether those examples are good or not haven't got much to do with those damned bells, imo.

Indeed. I never even thought these were bells while listening to the track. Was pleasantly distracted by the overall goodness of the track. → if others do such tracks with bells, it is ok for me.
To clarify things, I first noticed the bells problem in Tapage's album Seven. It is great at first listen. Then more than half of tracks goes to trash. A day or two later you can not ignore the bells over nice percussion in the last track you liked the most anymore. And it is trashed.
After that I started to notice bells much more frequently in other albums from various blogs.
I believe the problem does exist, though several people out of 7 billion can make good IDM even with bells. Not surprised that Autechre can. They are Google of IDM.

I like bells in any music genres... There are plenty of different ways to use bell sounds in "idm" or other types of music.
It's like saying... Stop using strings in Rock music... Oh, and no more Clarinet in classical music please...
Come on!!! I say go for it all.... As long as it makes for a pleasing end result, what are the limitations?!

This is exactly the case: it doesn't please me. The fuck it doesn't.
And no, bells in idm is not the same as strings in rock! One is absolutely not obliged to use bells in idm, while strings are inevitable for guitars. Midi guitar is not a guitar, it is a midi controller in shape of guitar.

afx @ metz this one the bell/tuss chime is such a highlight when it comes in.
excellent bells in my fav ae track
i dont exactly know where all this hate for bells comes from. they are so rich sounding and im all into temples n stuff right now so i like them loads. thing is i dont really think of proper chime/bell sounds being used that often. i know what you mean about those boring sine glockenspiel style plinkplonks in idm but they are only a chime in the sense they have a long decay they usually dont have any other fun chime properties.

Ok, your words are more correct. Glockenspiel, plinkplonks. That's more what I mean.
Thread is now renamed to 'Stop using glockenspiel in your idm'.
I like parhelic triangle; mentioned that in this thread. No plinkplonks in it, as well as in XMD5a.

Or maybe i'm old now and do not physically hear the fun in it, hidden somewhere in super high frequencies?

Those plinkyplonky glockenspiel bells are typically for the early 2000's. Right at the point where everyone was going for those Ae-lite sounds. Think Funkstorung and the likes.
There's lots of good plinkyplonky tracks, imo. But that tapage track you posted isn't one of them. I can agree with that.
It's just that tapage album and those newer plaid tracks you dislike, i think. And basically, the glockenspiel has become irrelevant since 2005.
