yes.
.exe files don't run on linux. and you're freed from the horrid registry to which all active virii run.

just be certain you preserve the right files and you're ok. and if you happen to preserve some virus, odds are it wouldn't work on your linux machine.

The (K)Ubuntu distributions are as user-friendly as it can get. Odds are it's just like installing Vista. Depending at what you connect to your outer, you might have to download some drivers. But that isn't much different in the world you're in now.
Just take a jump. In the worst case you have learnt something while being busy installing OS'es for the day.
All I can say really, is you'd be amazed how easy it was when you've done it.

Ubuntu is getting better with support for hardware/drivers - I tried it a few years ago and getting drivers and/or support for things like my wifi dongle or graphics card was a pain and fiddly, as I didn't really know what I was doing. I re-installed it a while ago and now pretty much everything works out the box. dual booting is always an option, but keeping organised between two operating systems can be a real chore. I only use Ubuntu now. Its nice to have a computer that doesn't do things unless you ask it to. I hated windows because the computer was always doing something in the background, and the hd was constantly wirring, and things always fucked up for no reason. the only reason I stuck with windows in the past is because of compatibility with certain applications and games, but I'm really not that bothered by that anymore.

VLC is very good. There's literally tons of music and video players for Linux.
A lot of them are front ends for Gstreamer, Mplayer or Xmms2, which do the business. Xmms2 is a bit like winamp used to be.
Rhythymbox is a bit like itunes.
I've been hearing very good things about Linux Mint, so perhaps try that instead of Ubuntu.
I first tried Linux perhaps 10 years ago with a CD on a magazine and it's come on leaps and bounds now in terms of good software and drivers. I now only dip into windows on very rare occasions to play some games or to run some awkward software.
The Wine project maps windows commands to Linux commands (it's not an emulator, so runs fast) and allows you to run a hell of a lot of windows programs under linux just be double clicking. I do this a lot. It's really very good.
You should give it a chance, if nothing else, a penguin is much better than a window!

My media player of choice is Technics 1210.
Also, would like to strongly recommend use OSS rather than ALSA for sound in Linux.
OSS4 is great. It just works.

Thanks, yeah Mint is what I was planning to try first. Programs I'm not too worry, it's just to browse the internet, play some files now and then, download files and transfer then to an external drive, it's an old notebook so I'm kind of worry about the drivers, I think I'm going to try a current Live CD first to see how it goes.

i have THE CRAPTOP. rescued from an IT dept. dumpster. bought a solid state drive, a wall brick, and a new battery. for a bit over $100, i got a reasonably useful second laptop. largely use it as a 4th screen and video player; it handles chunky mkv's better than a faster desktop running windows. however, this is only because i banished unity to deep.

I highly suggest the Linux Outlaws podcast (youtube/itunes) for keeping up to date on open source releases and linux culture.
Also, Steam is now on linux with nvidia "double speed" drivers. There's an article heralding such a bad ass accomplishment at the register.

btw I managed to configure sound settings so that I could record sound in Audacity [cause either my favourite Adobe Audition or even Cool Edit failed to load/work properly] while playing a track in FL Studio 10 [FL workin via Wine, of course] - but that was in linux mint 12 before it died. will try testing the same trick in lubuntu next.
I admit, music making hhhas not been as easy in linux as in win xp. But hhhey, it wasnt supposed to be easy learning linux ways since I've been only working in windows so far.
*puff*
@nanotech: thx a lot, will check that

Linux: Less of an OS, more of a religion.
I like it, need it to do my job and am comfortable working within it. That said, I do not use it as a "desktop" OS outside of work (despite having tried to do so several times, with different flavors), because the support and available applications for games/music making/video editing are relatively weak.
The one exception is that I had a Puppy Linux distro I made for playing emulated games and watching videos on my work laptop, whilst staying away, without needing to take a second laptop.
