has a new mac appz prog a la the iphone/ipad. many appz are
too expensive imo but check out the free soundcloud one - it
pulls all your followed musicians tracks into an itunes
style database/player. It's super nice and convenient=]

the app store will be a neat way to bring some lesser known
or highly specific apps to people's attention, but it will
never be able to flourish as full-fledged software delivery
platform.

here's why

yes, those criticisms are certainly all valid- i just see it
as an additional way to occasionally find things. in general
it's very overpriced but it might encourage a lot of small
developers to contribute new apps too.

Up until the osx app store, apple hasn't actually provided
developers a format to make it easy for users to install
software. I am sure this changes that. I remember how
annoying it was to install things when I had a mac. And
uninstalling them was worse. So this is good for most osx
users that plan on using the app store. However, I think its
going to cause problems for the whole software industry.

It's for mom and dad, not you scary hacker types who know
how to edit a url in the address bar.

Moms and dads are going to ruin technology for everyone.

apple is just the first to try and shoehorn a huge chunk of
the internet into it's walled garden gateway. I believe
amazon are going to have a similar effort for android, i'm
sure microsoft and others will follow but in a way it's no
different to online software purchases on Xbox live and Wii
online.

Steve Jobs sees the desktop computer as the equivalent of a
truck and the future will be the analogous cars and bikes of
portable computing- ipads/iphones/airs. I don't agree and
think it's a step too far but it's clearly central to their
business model to have control, stability and easy
distribution of software in order to sell their hardware.
And they want everyone, mums, dads and gran's to have it. I
mean Apple didn't make the itunes store to sell music, it
was done to sell ipods without having negative legal issues
about music piracy. Everything they're doing is pushing in
this direction. It's their long game.

I have to honestly add that i'm not a mac uberfan boy- I use
a PC too but tbh i've never had any problems installing on
my mac in 5-6 years. It would certainly cause problems for
the industry if apple pushed for super low pricing on the
software to shift more units but it doesn't look like this
is happening, judging by the pricing atm. But at the same
time the centralisation does allow very small developers to
easily fall on millions of people's radars and make a
living. They'll definitely need to improve how they organise
everything however. The iphone app store is bursting at the
seams and really needs a redesign.

I don't know if it will cause problems for the industry
except for apple taking a cut but i suspect that it's going
to manly end up catering for small apps and widget type
things for a while. If software company's want to sell
directly online from their own websites then this is still
possible, arguably competing at a lower price without Apple
extracting 30% of the fee.

It's convenience for the everyman. . . google search isn't
going anywhere=]

. . . i mean on that note, their rival google would like to
migrate a lot of applications to eventually be running just
through their browser- google documents etc. I'd feel
considerably more uncomfortable at the thought of an
advertising company taking a huge stake in how people use
their computers beyond their search window.

also it saves a lot of people from having to open the
diskimage they downloaded to launch a program

I don't think of google as an advertising company, even
though thats how they make their money. I see them more as a
technology company that is trying to make things accessible
to everyone. I am not so worried about my life being put
into the cloud, because like most people I am completely
uninteresting.

I am concerned with the way apple does business, because
they are so aggressive and controlling.

I haven't downloaded the update yet but all I really care
about is if they've fixed that graphics card fuck up from
the last update that meant I couldn't play Portal properly
anymore

Whatever happened to your graphics card, its not apples
fault. Its valve's.

Something happened with the system update in June that Valve
said they couldn't fix until Apple sorted something out, I
think it was specific to whatever type of graphics card my
Macbook came with. I didn't really try to understand it I
just stopped playing games because they got all jerky.

I had a problem in Portal only when it came to the last
chamber with the flames. Then it got all jerky and slow... I
figured it was because I got the cheaper imac with the
nvidia(?) chipset. The rest of the game plays OK, mostly.

i am continuously confused by people who have trouble
installing applications in mac os.

phase 1: open the disk image
phase 2: copy the application to your applications folder
phase 3: profit.

uninstalling involves dragging the application to the
trash.

where does the confusion happen?

lol

the confusion is supposed to be between steps 1 and 2:
"phase 1.5 : ?????"

learn your memes, buddy!!!!

installing on a mac is RIDICULOUSLY simple though. don't see
why anyone would have troubles with it. i guess some people
need to design entire folder trees to be able to use a
computer.

psh, i knew that meme before it was a meme.

it's only once you know the rules that you're allowed to
break them.

btw i browsed thru the app store and the only free app im at
all interested in is the soundcloud one, which is arguably
awesome.

i tried out alfred for a sec, but google quick search box
does all that already, and (shock!) more simply.

btw you have to enter credit card and billing address info
just to download free apps.

BBBBUUUUUULLLLSSSHIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTT!!!!!!!

yeah totally unnecessary. I think the worst 'you don't
fucking need this' data harvesting is the current facebook
security link that says you have low security until you give
them your mobile telephone number. soon they'll be asking
for a bank statement and photo of your genitals.

In post programs it is fairly simple, but some of them are
not so much. Look at CDP as an example.
