yesterday i walked past the local Apple store coincidentally
(in the way that it was on the route, but another route
would have been shorter), and there was a line of 40~50
people srsly. i lold on the inside a little, but then some
Apple guy with an iPad came out the store and bumped right
into me, so i could touch it and hold it and play around
with it. I was on a sneery "yeah fuck Apple and their nazi
business" stance lately, but now i want one. It instantly
felt more solid and by that more valid than
any music controller / laptop i've seen, the screen
is crisp, it is very responsive. It leaves a believable
impression of not being a toy. Like, "feel me, don't i feel
amazing? With your fingers on this screen, anything can
happen. I love you. touch me!" Haters gonna hate, but
be prepared to hate for a while cause this thing will most
definitely stick around,

sticking their fingers into paintings, tvs and your laptop
screen will fucking love it.

It is still an expensive toy for grown-ups.

I don't care if people buy them so long as they don't claim
that THEY are superior for having one or indeed try to
convince me to buy one because it's just so pant wettingly
magical. The word "experience" is also verboten. It's
"function" you fools.

If you do buy one, try not to be some fickle consumer whore
and ditch it in a years time when the shinier better one
comes out - think of the planet and whatnot, seriously.

Finally, no multitasking? WTF? My N900 smartphone does TRUE
multitasking, my computer does multitasking... Ipad doesn't.

don't sweat it about the multi-tasking business. there's an
os update on the line (in a couple of months, at most) after
which ipads/phones/touches will have multitask. which they
already have btw. but just not for 3rd party apps.

offline dave_g from United Kingdom on 2010-05-29 13:25 [#02381791]

Will it be true multitasking though?
On my computer and N900 the programs are active even when
not displayed. I suspect that the Apple multitask may
instead pause the program "in the background" rather than
keeping it active.
This is acceptable in some cases, but not all.

For example, on my N900 I can have the update manager
downloading in the background while I send a text, while I
have music playing from a youtube in a browser window with a
download going on in another browser window, etc.
It is a pocket computer. If Ipad can do this sort of thing
it will be a better, but still can't fit in your pocket! ;-)

current iphones can already run multiple apps at once. i can
play games while listening to the music in my playlists
(from outside the game). it's just very restricted.

if you want to educate yourself some more, here's an article
about it:

this is a better article
apples_iphone_4_0_software_to_deliver_multitasking_suppor...

Controversy over "multitasking" within the iPhone OS has
been brewing ever since Apple launched iPhone 2.0 with the
ability to run third party software titles. While often
reported as begin a technical flaw, the iPhone OS really has
no problem with multitasking.

The system's phone, SMS, email, iPod, voice recorder, Nike+,
and certain other bundled apps can continue in the
background while the user launches another app. However,
third party titles obtained from the App Store (including
apps from Apple, such as Remote or iDisk) can not be
launched at the same time.

This behavior is prevented by the iPhone OS' security model,
which is designed to close the current app whenever the user
returns to the Home screen or accepts an incoming call. This
design prevents apps from being able to run in the
background without the user knowing, and therefore erases
any real potential for spyware, adware and viruses.

The current system is artificially limited to a few
applications.
I find it amazing that in 2010 it is still limited. Why do
you have to wait for an update? Why can't it do it out of
the box?

My Sony Ericsson P1i from 2007 had proper multitasking.
For such a "magical" device, Ipad really is slow on what I
would consider an essential feature.
As a "media" consumption device the Ipad is probably great.
As a netbook or laptop replacement it sucks.
(Don't forget Jobbo lamenting netbooks for being useless
LAZY_TITLE )
I realise that with Itunes media consumption is the name of
the game (get your money twice) but it's all a bit sad that
there are artificial limitations in this day and age and
even sadder that most people seem not to care so long as the
device is pretty.

That would imply that the applications that are "checked" by
Apple prior to being blessed with the ability to install on
the Ipad are full of "spyware, adware and viruses".

I could understand that reasoning if it wasn't for the fact
that Apple must check every program, therefore I call BS.

nah it can have true background processes (after the os
upgrade) though the switching between apps seems a bit
awkward.
they demoed it some while ago.

but, (the standard built in) apps (i've tried) do launch
very quick, quicker than most websites load in a desktop
browser anyway, so there doesn't seem to be a need to have
multitasking just for the sake of a program being instantly
available imo...

how do you decide that "experience" is verboten but
"function" is the aspect that should be of importance? this
hardware itself doesn't really bring new functions (in the
initial state it is in right now at least), it is
solely about delivering on an aluminium platter a
smoother experience for these daily tasks than the
competition: mail, videos, browsing, some typing..
And i give em that. It's not all flawless, but still very
convincingly relaxed and smooth compared to the rest.

And you can bet that they're willing to put a lot of energy
into very convincing and smooth application
development now, so don't worry about this function thing...

come on dave. don't be such an apple hater. first you say
they can't do multitask, so they suck. and when it appears
they already could, you turn it immediately into another
point of criticism: they're too slow.

well, if you've seen the demo on the new os you may have
seen jobs admitting they're late to the party (just like
copy/paste), and explaining it took some time because they
were looking for an implementation which doesn't drain
battery, or severely restricts performance. i dunno, i guess
i fit in the apple-zealot box, but that does make some sense
to me. sometimes it could make sense to restrict "functions"
to preserve "experience" (to use your words). whether this
is the case here is debatable. point is, the world where
functions is most important is just as ridiculous as a world
where only experience counts. so lets just acknowledge
there's some middle ground somewhere, where both things can
live happily together (and the the anti-apple/ant-pc shit).
you're more a function kind of guy - even though performance
might not be so good - and i might be more of an experience
kind of guy - better performance but less functionality.
just getting tired of the obvious anti-apple bias. thats
all.

decided to give at&t a real hot reach around by funneling

How nice would it be to have a chat application running in

Apples push api has to do with this as well....

Sup bredbins. I've not been on this site for years...

I will now honour you all with my reasons why the iPad sucks
anus, as you masturbate over my superior logic:

1) It's an oversized iPhone, without the phone function. And
without the camera.

2) The OS is the same as the iPhones, so it's extremely
limited in comparison to a real computer OS, that can be
found on similar priced devices (laptops, netbooks).

3) It has no upgradable memory or memory card slots. So that
Apple can later bring out higher capacity versions to milk
you some more.

4) It has a CPU thats hardly any faster than the 1GHz CPU in
my phone. It will be vastly slower than a similar priced
laptop because of this. It also has way less RAM.

5) No DVD/Blu-ray drive of any sort. That again is found on
similar priced laptops (atleast a DVD re-writer anyway).

6) It has no video output connectors like all laptops have.

7) It has no standard USB ports, instead having a
proprietary connector so Apple can milk you some more.

8) The web browser has poor support and many websites do not
render correctly.

9) On top of that it does not support Flash (or any other
plugin), which even my phone has, so you miss out on more
websites. Over 70% of the most popular sites use Flash in
some form. Making the iPad pretty useless for browsing, so
what else would you use it for?

10) ..Video? well that would be cack too, as it does not
have a 16:9 aspect ratio screen, and the screen res is not
full HD (1920x1080).

11) Limited multitasking, 3rd party apps have no access to
it.

12) Lastly, Master Jobs will dictate what is and is not
allowed for you. As obviously you're too stupid to choose
for yourself.

shall i bite, i will,

yeh i'm not an Apple advocate out of pure idiotism.
Most of the points Beany is trying to make are either
missing the point, or plain false though.

This iPad is not a desktop computer and it doesn't try to
be. Nor does it try to be a laptop. Or a netbook. Yes, it's
an iPod touch, only bigger. Which makes the touch interface
more ... bigger.. and gives you more screen real estate.
That's all! And it's a concept that works. That's what i
learned when actually playing around with it.

(And of course Apple is milking customers. As they always
did. In exchange for your money you get a rather slick, well
thought out product. Oh hey! hey! I've got a great idea you
know! Don't buy it if you don't like it! :D)

So why does this concept work? Simple: App Store.

I'm reading through Cocoa documentation to see what you can
actually make this thing do, and it definitely has its
limitations. But, it currently is the only mobile platform
where the audio APIs don't 100% suck, for instance.
Or do you have some half-way decent sound software on your
Nokia? Please don't take this as an offense. The competition
isn't sleeping (anymore). So in a year or two, maybe it will
not be a pain or plain impossible to make cool audio
software for Android, Symbian, or Windows 7 mobile anymore!

>:D >:D

I recently tried to code something that runs natively on
Windows 7. When i opened its hood, huge zombie rats came
flying into my face, i got scared and ran away.

The Cocoa frameworks are about as slick as Apple's
industrial design. It's easier to build a working
interface for an iPad app than making a fucking Powerpoint
slide.

Like i said in the OP, haters gonna hate. But why?

Anyone who faults the ipad for its limited functionality is
somewhat missing the point. Apple having been doing
computers long enough to know the relative merits of
different peripheral devices and propritetry software. It is
also smart enough to know it can exhibit a significant level
of control by limiting or eliminating external influence.
Then there is the consideration that for many users this
will by a lifestlye product first and a computer second. Who
gives a fuck about USB, what are you going to plug into it
anyway? Apple have ntohing to gain from being an open
community. As a piece of hardware you could easily argue its
underpowered, but only in context or something its not
aspiring to compete with.

I think the most significant thing apple have done with the
ipad is set a benchmark for tablet computing. They've been
around for years and from personal experience , always
shite. Hopefully the ipad will encourage a bit of innovation
and competition.

Oh and for the record, apple are shit and they're not having
a penny more of my dollar after my ipod fiasco.

Terence... all my points are valid, and you said some are
false... but didn't mention what ones. Maybe because none
are.

You was all smart in your first post til you said:

"I was on a sneery "yeah fuck Apple and their nazi
business" stance lately, but now i want one. "

;( and you call me an idiot. You got to hold a shiney
utterly useless toy, and like a kid, it made you want one.
Not trying to be rude here, but it's true.

Apples business practices and dictating should be enough
alone to make anyone not buy there products.

And you talk about app creation ease... you know what
completely dwarfs apples Cocoa for ease? ... Adobe Flash.
You can literally make anything in Flash, it's also cross
platform and works on all major OS's, so not JUST limited to
apple gear, and it's dev tools are vastly superior than
anything apple have.
But being the nazi's that they are... Apple dont allow
Flash, they wont even allow Flash code that has been
converted to Objective-C code what there iDevices use. So
just because the game/app/whatever was originally created in
Flash they will not allow it, regardless if it's not even
Flash based anymore and uses native iDevice code. How
ridiculous is that?

At the end it all comes down to this... why pay for
something the same size, same shape, same weight as many
laptops (some are even lighter and smaller)... that is
capable of way less in both hardware and software?
Theres NO advantage at all.
Even for something as simple as sitting down and putting it
on your lap, or a table, then a laptop would be better
suited for this.

But if you MUST have a tablet device then atleast wait for
Android powered ones.
